RM2: Transform operations

The two-dimensional transform used in the research TV source encoder, RM2 is discussed. It is shown that both conceptually and in terms of the number of required computations, the RM2 transform is considerably simpler than the Fast Hadamard Transform. The latter can in fact be generated by extending the RM2 transform.

Method and apparatus for decoding compatible convolutional codes

This invention relates to learning decoders for decoding compatible convolutional codes. The decoder decodes signals which have been encoded by a convolutional coder and allows performance near the theoretical limit of performance for coded data systems. The decoder includes a sub-bit shift register wherein the received sub-bits are entered after regeneration and shifted in synchronization with a clock signal recovered from the received sub-bit stream. The received sub-bits are processed by a sub-bit decision circuit, entered into a sub-bit shift register, decoded by a decision circuit, entered into a data shift register, and updated to reduce data errors. The bit decision circuit utilizes stored sub-bits and stored data bits to determine subsequent data-bits. Data errors are reduced by using at least one up-date circuit.

Multichannel forward scattering meter for oceanography

An instrument was designed and built that measures the light scattered at several angles in the forward direction simultaneously. The instrument relies on an optical multiplexing technique for frequency encoding of the different channels suitable for detection by a single photodetector. A Mie theory computer program was used to calculate the theoretical volume scattering function for a suspension of polystyrene latex spheres. The agreement between the theoretical and experimental volume scattering functions is taken as a verification of the calibration technique used.

Multimegabit Operation Multiplexer System

The Multimegabit Operation Multiplexer System (MOMS) is a high-data-rate PCM telemetry unit capable of sampling and encoding 60 scanning radiometer and four vidicon channels at 250 kilosamples/second and 5 megasamples/second, respectively. This sampling capacity plus the seven-bit quantization requires a total throughput rate of 40 megasamples/second and 280 megabits/second. To produce these rates efficiently, the system was divided into a pair of identical 140-megabit blocks. A low-power 20-MHz analog multiplexer and analog-to-digital converter were developed together with a video sample-and-hold that features an aperture time error of less than 50 psec. Breadboard testing of these basic building blocks confirmed the design prediction that the total system would consume 27 watts of power. Two 140-megabit output parts are suitable for quadriphase modulation.

Uniform quantizers for noisy channels

We consider optimum uniform data quantization for noisy channels. We present a general formulation for natural encoding that results in simple expressions for the mean-square error. Specifically, we show that the optimum location of the center of the quantizer is at the mean of the distribution for all error rates. The optimum levels for quantization and the corresponding mean-square error are presented for Gaussian and uniform data. For the latter the width of the optimum quantizer for noisy channels is shown to be smaller than the entire range of probability distribution.

Time and frequency for digital telecommunications

Time and frequency (T and F) are fundamental and pervasive parameters of telecommunication technology. Advancing development of digital communications using data modulation rates above 2400 baud and time-division multiplex in complex network configurations is now requiring more accurate and precise T and F reference information for efficient operation of telecommunication systems. A schematic diagram of a general communication system is shown. This diagram is very general and can depict any type of communication. The information source selects a specific message which is encoded and sent through a communication channel. Enroute, the signal is subjected to perturbations from environmental noise. The received signal is then decoded and delivered to its destination. Through the process, the message may undergo many spurious changes, resulting in a loss of information content in the delivered message as compared to the original selected message. In digital telecommunication systems, loss of information content of the signals can be attributed to noise, distortion of waveshape, and loss of synchronization.

Instrumentation for one-way satellite PTTI applications

A review of general principles and operational procedures illustrates how the typical passive user and omni receiving antenna can recover Precise Time and Time Interval (PTTI) information from a low altitude navigation satellite system for clock calibration and synchronization. Detailed discussions of concepts and theory of the receiver design are presented. The importance of RF correlation of the received and local PN encoded sequences is emphasized as a means of reducing delay uncertainties of the instrumentation to values compatible with nanosecond to submicrosecond PTTI objectives. Two receiver configurations were fabricated for use in satellite-to-laboratory experiments. In one receiver the delay-locked loop for PN signals synchronization used a dithered amplitude detection process while the second receiver used a complex sums phase detection method for measurement of delay error. The necessity for compensation of Doppler shift is discussed. Differences in theoretical signal acquisition and tracking performance of the design concepts are noted.

Airoscope telemetry system

The AIROscope (Ames Infrared Observatory telescope) telemetry system is described from signal conditioning on the gondola to display and storage at the ground station. All analog and digital data from the systems and experiments on the gondola go to a PCM encoder which formats the data into 10-bit words. Therefore, 0.1-percent resolution is inherently available for experimental data. The coded bit stream directly modulates the carrier of the FM transmitter. To insure reliable transmission over a 650-km range an 11-watt FM transmitter operating at 1483.5 MHz is used on the gondola. Modulation is narrow band FM with a maximum deviation of plus or minus 500 kHz. The maximum modulation frequency is determined by the data bit rate which could be as high as 500 kbps. Presently, a rate of 20.48 kbps is used. The ground station receiving system includes a steerable antenna (19-db gain), preamplifier (21-db gain) and receiver. All data are recorded on a tape recorder. The recorded signal then can be played back through the PCM decommutator unit at a later time for detailed data analysis by the experimenter.

Airoscope command system

A PCM telemetry command system is presented having a capacity of 256 unique commands, an end-to-end actuation time of less than 250 milliseconds, and an address plus complementary command code to provide security against the acceptance of anything but intended commands. The system consists of a ground-based encoder and a balloon-borne decoder, both built using low-current drain, high reliability CMOS logic elements. Commands are normally issued by a simple switch closure to +5VDC on the appropriate input line, however as a backup mode, the 8-bit command may be entered manually on 8 toggle switches and executed via a SEND button. In any case, the command is then serialized into a PCM bit stream and sent via a P-Band radio link to the DECODER aloft. All 256 outputs from the DECODER are buffered through drivers and thus may be used to drive CMOS, TTL, or DTL logic.

Auxiliary DCP data acquisition system

An airborne DCP Data Aquisition System has been designed to augment the ERTS satellite data recovery system. The DCP's are data collection platforms located at pertinent sites. With the appropriate sensors they are able to collect, digitally encode and transmit environmental parameters to the ERTS satellite. The satellite in turn relays these transmissions to a ground station for processing. The satellite is available for such relay duty a minimum of two times in a 24-hour period. The equipment is to obtain continuous DCP data during periods of unusual environmental activity--storms, floods, etc. Two circumstances contributed to the decision to design such a system; (1) Wallops Station utilizes surveillance aircraft in support of rocket launches and also in support of earth resources activities; (2) the area in which Wallops is located, the Delaware and Chesapeake Bay areas, are fertile areas for DCP usage. Therefore, by developing an airborne DCP receiving station and installing it on aircraft more continuous DCP data can be provided from sites in the surrounding areas at relatively low cost.
