Aeroelastic Trim Drag Optimization of Mach 0.8 Transonic Truss-Braced Wing Aircraft using High-Lift Devices and Control Surfaces

This paper presents an aeroelastic trim drag optimization study of the Mach 0.8 Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW) aircraft using the High-lift devices and control surfaces. An aero-structural analysis solver VSPAERO with transonic small disturbance, integral boundary-layer, and wing-strut interference corrections coupled to mode shapes computed by NASTRAN using the Galerkin method is developed to provide a rapid aircraft aeroelastic performance evaluation. Three different flight conditions corresponding to Mach 0.8 are selected for the aeroelastic trim drag optimization at the design and off-design cruise lift coefficients. The preliminary optimization results show that the TTBW aircraft with the optimized deflection of the high-lift devices and control surfaces achieves a drag reduction of about 8.2 counts, 6.5 counts, and 9.7 counts corresponding to the lift coefficients 0.661, 0.695, and 0.729, respectively. A high-fidelity CFD solver FUN3D is used to verify the aeroelastic trim drag optimization.

Benchmark Performance Metrics of a Vane Propellant Management Device for a 0.15 m3 Liquid Hydrogen Tank

The use of cryogenic propellants has and will continue to play an integral role in manned-space exploration due the high specific impulses offered and its ubiquity through in-situ resource utilization. But guaranteeing vapor-free transfer of such low-surface tension liquids is difficult for traditional capillary-action propellant management devices (PMDs). Screen-channel liquid acquisition devices and compliant origami bladders are potential solutions, but to quantify the benefits these technologies offer, this paper present a cast study analyzing the performance metrics of an orthodox vane PMD as a benchmark for comparison. A 0.15 m3 liquid hydrogen tank at 20.3 K and 103 kPa was selected for study. Then assuming no body forces and no heat transfer (for simplicity), a steady-state 1-D differential equation was numerically solved in tandem with four possible wetted area configurations to yield an expulsion efficiency for a theoretically maximum inputted expulsion flow rate. Maximization of the flow rate was constrained by the onset of choked flow. Additional inputs, including vane height and vane number, were parametrically varied between 0.1 – 10 cm and 4 – 28 vanes, respectively.

NASA Engineering and Safety Center Technical Bulletin No. 23-07: Best Practices for Fabrication of Microelectronic Devices

Material degradation during the fabrication of microelectronic devices has plagued the space industry for many years owing to the layering of many dissimilar metals to create these devices. Often, commonly used materials and systems are overlooked as potential sources of material degradation. This technical bulletin highlights extensive research to isolate probable causes of this degradation.

Testing device subjects elastic materials to biaxial deformations

Testing device stretches elastic materials biaxially over large deformation ranges and varies strain ratios in two perpendicular directions. The device is used in conjunction with a tensile testing machine, which holds the specimen and permits control over the direction and magnitude of the stresses applied.

Device measures fluid drag on test vehicles

Electromechanical drag balance device measures the aerodynamic drag force acting on a vehicle as it moves through the atmosphere and telemeters the data to a remote receiving station. This device is also used for testing the hydrodynamic drag characteristics of underwater vehicles.

Friction device damps linear motion of rotating shaft

Damping device checks the axial motion of a rotating shaft by exerting a controllable, radial frictional load to the outer race of the ball bearing in which the shaft is mounted. The device can be used as a soft bearing mount to damp resonant frequencies at critical shaft speed.

Device spot-laps spheres to very close tolerances

Device laps precise amounts of metal from high spots on a spherical body to correct minute surface imperfections. The device generates the lapped surface with reference to an existing true surface on the spherical workpiece. Lapping is performed by applying a rotary and oscillatory motion to the workpiece while the lapping tool is held on the workpiece high spot.

Optical device enables small detector to see large field of view

Optical device images the sun on a mask that transmits it or prevents its transmission to a photodetector behind the mask depending on image position on the mask. The device uses a pinhole as the image former to provide a large field of view and diffraction-limited resolution.
