Analysis of heat-transfer tests of an impingement-convection- and film-cooled vane in a cascade

Experimental flow and heat transfer data obtained for an air-cooled turbine vane tested in a static cascade at gas temperatures and pressures to 1644 K (2500 F) and 31 N/cm2 (45 psia), respectively, are presented. Average and local vane temperatures were correlated in several ways. Calculated and measured coolant flows and vane temperatures are compared. Potential allowable increases in gas temperature are also discussed.

Heat transfer to four fineness-ratio-1.6 hexagonal prisms with various corner radii at Mach 6

An investigation was conducted in the Langley 20-inch Mach 6 tunnel to define the aerodynamic heat transfer to the radioisotope fuel cask (heat source) of the SNAP-19/Pioneer power system. The shape of the SNAP-19/Pioneer heat source is that of a hexagonal prism with flat ends; the fineness ratio, based on maximum (edge to edge) diameter, is 1.61. Phase-change-paint heat-transfer data and schlieren photographs were obtained on four possible 1/2-scale entry configurations of the SNAP-19/Pioneer heat source. Tests were conducted over a wide range of attitudes and at nominal Reynolds numbers, based on the length of the unablated configuration, of 33,000; 84,000; and 2,200,000.

Prediction of local and integrated heat transfer in nozzles using an integral turbulent boundary layer method

An empirical modification of an existing integral energy turbulent boundary layer method is proposed in order to improve the estimates of local heat transfer in converging-diverging nozzles and consequently, provide better assessments of the total or integrated heat transfer. The method involves the use of a modified momentum-heat analogy which includes an acceleration term comprising the nozzle geometry and free stream velocity. The original and modified theories are applied to heat transfer data from previous studies which used heated air in 30 deg - 15 deg, 45 deg - 15 deg, and 60 deg - 15 deg water-cooled nozzles.

Space shuttle orbiter reentry flow field and heating analysis

The reentry flow field and thermal environment around the straight wing shuttle orbiter vehicle were determined. Both rarefied and continuum flow fields and associated heating rates on various configurations representative of the orbiter at high angle of attack were calculated. Rarefied flow fields and heating rates were computed by the Monte Carlo direct simulation technique for altitudes above 82.3 km. Continuum inviscid flow fields were calculated by 2-D unsteady and 3-D steady finite difference/artificial viscosity methods and also by a 2-D shock layer analysis technique. Viscous flow fields and heating rates in the continuum regime were computed by a boundary layer integral matrix method for laminar flow and by an aerodynamic surface heating technique for turbulent flow. Shapes considered in the study included flat plates (representing the underside of the orbiter fuselage or the wing MAC), orbiter fuselage cross sections, orbiter wing airfoils, and 3-D orbiter configurations, all at high angle of attack (40 - 60 deg). The theoretical results showed good agreement with measured pressure and heat transfer data.

Heat transfer investigation of Langley Research Center transition models at a Mach number of 8, volume 2

The results are presented of a wind tunnel test program to determine aerodynamic heat transfer distributions on delta body and straight body transition models of the space shuttle. Heat transfer rates were determined by the phase-change paint technique on Stycast and RTV models using Tempilag as the surface temperature indicator. The nominal test conditions were: Mach 8, length Reynolds numbers of 5 million and 7.4 million, and angles of attack of 20, 40, and 60 deg. Model details, test conditions, and reduced heat transfer data are included. Data reduction of the phase-change paint photographs was performed by utilizing a new technique.

Discrete sonic jets used as boundary-layer trips at Mach numbers of 6 and 8.5

The effect of discrete three-dimensional sonic jets used to promote transition on a sharp-leading-edge flat plate at Mach numbers of 6 and 8.5 and unit Reynolds numbers as high as 2.5 x 100,000 per cm in the Langley 20-inch hypersonic tunnels is discussed. An examination of the downstream flow-field distortions associated with the discrete jets for the Mach 8.5 flow was also conducted. Jet trips are found to produce lengths of turbulent flow comparable to those obtained for spherical-roughness-element trips while significantly reducing the downstream flow distortions. A Reynolds number based upon secondary jet penetration into a supersonic main flow is used to correlate jet-trip effectiveness just as a Reynolds number based upon roughness height is used to correlate spherical-trip effectiveness. Measured heat-transfer data are in agreement with the predictions.

Average heat-transfer characteristics of a row of circular air jets impinging on a concave surface

A study of the average heat-transfer characteristics of air jets impinging on the concave side of a right-circular semicylinder is reported. Results from existing correlating are compared with each other and with experimental heat-transfer data for a row of circular jets. Two correlations available in the literature are recommended for use in designing cooled turbine vanes and blades.

Trends in NASA communication satellites

Satellite telecommunications can help to satisfy several national needs such as education, health care, cultural opportunities, and data transfer. There are current experiments being conducted with NASA spacecraft ATS 1, 3, and 5 in an attempt to satisfy these national needs. Future experiments are planned for the ATS F/G and CTS spacecrafts. The next generation of communications satellites must provide multiple region coverage, multichannel capability, high quality TV pictures, and must allow low cost ground receivers to be used. The proposed NASA spacecrafts, ATS H/I, will satisfy these requirements. Other countries of the world can benefit from ATS H/I technology.

Design of a high-speed real-time symbiont

The problems involved, approach taken, and solution arrived at are described in a software study to design a high speed, real time symbiont for analog telemetry processing. The symbiont design is based on the need for transferring data from one I/O device to another without significant use of core space or central processor time. The queues, programmed wait states, and teletype commands incorporated in the symbiont design are discussed.

Lee-surface heating and flow phenomena on space shuttle orbiters at large angles of attack and hypersonic speeds

The lee-surface flow phenomena on a delta-wing orbiter and a straight-wing orbiter have been investigated at angles of attack between 0 deg and 50 deg at a Mach number of 6. Limited studies of the delta-wing orbiter were conducted at a Mach number of 19. Heat-transfer data, pressure distributions, and oil-flow studies were employed to experimentally examine the nature of the surface flow and the severity of the lee-surface heating. The effects of Reynolds number on the flow field and heating were investigated. Problem areas are defined and areas for further study are recommended.

Turbulent boundary layer in an adverse pressure gradient without effect of wall curvature

The hypersonic compressible turbulent boundary layer in an adverse pressure gradient along a cylindrical axisymmetric body was studied. The tests were conducted in a Mach 6 contoured axisymmetric nozzle. An external compression cowl was used to produce the gradual adverse pressure gradient and a maximum pressure rise of 7 times the freestream static pressure was achieved in a test region of 23 cm. Boundary layer profiles of static pressure, total pressure, and total temperature, as well as wall transient heat transfer rates were measured. Comparisons of the velocity total temperature profiles to linear and quadratic relations were made. Measured heat transfer data were in good agreement with the prediction from the flat-plate reference enthalpy method. Integral parameters were also in good agreement with results of numerical solutions for compressible turbulent boundary layer equations.

Engineering prediction of turbulent skin friction and heat transfer in high-speed flow

A large collection of experimental turbulent-skin-friction and heat-transfer data for flat plates and cones was used to determine the most accurate of six of the most popular engineering-prediction methods; the data represent a Mach number range from 4 to 13 and ratio of wall to total temperature ranging from 0.1 to 0.7. The Spalding and Chi method incorporating virtual-origin concepts was found to be the best prediction method for Mach numbers less than 10; the limited experimental data for Mach numbers greater than 10 were not well predicted by any of the engineering methods except the Coles method.
