A method of inversion of satellite magnetic anomaly data

A method of finding a first approximation to a crustal magnetization distribution from inversion of satellite magnetic anomaly data is described. Magnetization is expressed as a Fourier Series in a segment of spherical shell. Input to this procedure is an equivalent source representation of the observed anomaly field. Instability of the inversion occurs when high frequency noise is present in the input data, or when the series is carried to an excessively high wave number. Preliminary results are given for the United States and adjacent areas.

Stochastic parametric skeletal dosimetry model for humans: Anatomical-morphological basis and parameter evaluation

Radiation exposure of the hematopoietic system that results in a radiation dose to bone marrow of more than 100 mGy leads to an increase in the risk of leukemia in humans. Excess relative risk of leukemia was observed in cohorts whose members lived in the territories of the Southern Urals that were radioactively contaminated in the 1950s. As part of the dosimetric support of epidemiological studies of these cohorts, an original methodology for stochastic bone dosimetric modeling was developed, termed the Stochastic Parametric Skeletal Dosimetry (SPSD) model. The purpose of this work was to present the anatomical and morphological bases of the SPSD model, which includes an assessment of the parameters of the microstructure of the trabecular bone in the hematopoietic areas of the human skeleton, as well as a description of the macrostructural division (segmentation) of hematopoietic areas into simple bone segments. As a result, an anatomical-morphological basis of the SPSD model was created based on published data. Data collection work included the analysis of original articles, atlases, manuals, monographs and the formation of primary data files. Data on the duration of hematopoiesis in various parts of the skeleton; and data on age-related changes in the microstructure and linear dimensions of human bones and their segments were analyzed. The paper describes the full set of parameters to be used for the dosimetric model for newborns, children aged 1, 5 and 10 years, as well as for adolescents aged 15 years and adults; for the latter, sex differences in bone size were considered. In total, the SPSD model includes 289 unique basic (bone) phantom segments, each of which is described by 7 or more parameters describing the microstructure, thickness of the cortical layer and linear dimensions. Population variability was estimated for each parameter. The approach to SPSD modeling, i.e., the use of simple geometric shapes, was successfully verified using independent datasets on bone masses and volumes.

Proposed Analytical Methods for Determining Filter Media Properties

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, commonly used in nuclear filtration applications, are an integral part of the waste management processes in nuclear plants. HEPA filters are 99.97% efficient filtration devices characterized by their high resistance to air flow, or pressure drop. From theoretical models, the initial pressure drop across a clean filter is proven to be a function of the filter media fiber diameters and porosity of the media. These filter properties are relatively difficult to obtain with traditional manual methods; therefore, there is a need to develop analytical methods to find the fiber diameter and porosity to determine the pressure drop. Typically, these values can be found by substituting a calculated representative value based upon measured values, such as equivalent fiber diameter based upon a clean pressure drop. However, these values may also be directly recorded and measured by incorporating Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image analysis and other measurement methods to analyze the filter media and determine its physical properties without the need for media testing. DiameterJ, an open source Java plug-in, used with ImageJ, can process images of filter media taken by an SEM to find statistical data such as mean fiber diameter and porosity. To produce the raw data, SEM images of two filter media type samples are taken and segmented in DiameterJ using the traditional and statistical region merging segmentation algorithms. Manual segmentation is necessary after the initial segmentation by the algorithms as the images tend to be too complex for the algorithms to output with the necessary accuracy. However, complications exist in the manual segmentation process as these methods can be time intensive and prone to the individual bias of the user. This in turn can skew the final mean fiber diameter result, and lead to either an over or under prediction of the pressure drop. It was also discovered that the porosity data produced by DiameterJ is inaccurate, as the SEM analyzes the three-dimensional filter media by projecting its geometry onto a plane and analyzing it as a two-dimensional binary image. Thus, the porosity is artificially inflated through the segmentation process, rendering this result incorrect. Alternatively, density determination, gravimetric analysis, and thickness testing of the filter media is collectively used to determine the filter fiber porosity. Together, the SEM image analysis and analytical lab methods produce results through direct measurements which allow for the prediction of the initial pressure drop from clean filter media without the need for prior media testing to collect pressure data. By improving upon this proposed analytical method in the future, there is potential to streamline the process of finding these filter properties into a more direct methodology for determining the pressure drop across HEPA filters.

Sensor needs for agricultural applications

The peculiarities of agricultural remotely sensed data requirements evoke special sensor requirements. Vegetative species do not possess significantly different spectral signature at given phases of their development cycle. Hence, the key to their discriminability is the phasing of the phenologic cycle of the subject species. Significant improvements in classification can be obtained by consistently employing multi-temporal observations taken at specific times during the year. The present approach to agricultural data processing results in extracted data equal to approximately .05% of the acquired data. This paper discusses the derivation of agricultural peculiar requirements and the benefits to the end-to-end processing system by judicial utilization and placement of key editing functions such as sample segment extraction, cloudy image removal, sample registration and the elimination of redundant data.

The rings of Uranus

Stellar occultation data on the Uranian rings are summarized. Spatial resolution is 0.1 km, for positions of ring segments, 4 km for structural details. The system consists of 9 narrow rings with average geometric albedo of 0.02. The data are well fitted by a kinematic model that describes the rings as ellipses, inclined to the equatorial plane of Uranus and precess due to harmonic terms in the Uranian potential fields. The main characteristics of the Uranian ring system that need a confirmed theoretical explanation are: narrow rings; sharp edges; uniform orbital precession; origin of the eccentricities and inclinations; the structure of the epsilon ring; the structure of the eta ring; and the origin of the ring system.

In-Situ Process Monitoring Evaluation and Demonstration using Advanced Characterization with Laser Powder Bed Systems

Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) worked with EOS Group to evaluate the current in-situ sensor capabilities of an EOS M290 Laser Powder Bed Fusion machine. The M290 was fitted with a 1 Mega-Pixel (MP) grayscale visible-light camera and a 5 MP temporally integrated (TI) near-infrared (NIR) camera. One print from stainless steel (SS) 316 and two from Inconel 625 (IN625) were performed where data including in-situ imaging and a machine log file were captured. These data were subsequently analyzed using a Dynamic Multi-Scale Segmentation Convolutional Neural Network (DMSCNN) trained on user defined classes and correlated to as-printed flaws, in the form of porosity, discovered in X-Ray Computed Tomography (XCT). In Phase I, two indications were detected in-situ and spatially correlated to stochastic lack-of-fusion flaws discovered using XCT. In Phase II, using these links from in-situ signatures to XCT flaw populations, a second neural network (NN) was trained to create a Voxelized Property Prediction Model (VPPM) to predict porosity percentages within the part using only features garnered from the in-situ data from two IN625 complex geometries. The VPPM was able to accurately predict porosity values for IN625 parts with an R 2 value of 0.764.

ContourNet: Salient Local Contour Identification for Blob Detection in Fusion Plasma Simulation Data

We present ContourNet, a deep learning approach to identify salient local isocontours as blobs in large-scale 5D gyrokinetic tokamak simulation data. Blobs-regions of high turbulence that run along the edge wall down toward the diverter and can damage the tokamak-are non-well-defined features but have been empirically localized by isocontours in 2D normalized fluctuating density fields. The key of our study is to train ContourNet to follow the empirical rules to detect blobs over the time-varying simulation data. The architecture of ContourNet is a convolutional neural segmentation network: the inputs are the density field and a rasterized isocontour; the output is a set of isocontour encircling blobs. At the training stage, we feed the network with manually identified isocontours and propagated labels. At the inference stage, we extract isocontours from the segmented blob regions. Results show that our approach can achieve both high accuracy and performance, which enables scientists to understand the blob dynamics influencing the confinement of the plasma.

Measuring thermal curing induced shrinkage of material extrusion based additive manufacturing silicone elastomer lattices by X-ray computed tomography

Thermal curing induces shrinkage in material extrusion based additive manufacturing silicone elastomer samples, resulting in discrepancies between as printed and final geometries. Knowing the extent to which the samples change in shape and size allows us to make appropriate modifications to the printing design to better control the geometry of the samples. We present an X-ray computed tomography (CT) based approach to determine filament-level shrinkage due to thermal curing of silicone elastomer samples printed with direct ink writing (DIW). The approach relies on custom-designed build plates that are resistant to the elevated curing temperatures and that have sufficiently distinct X-ray absorption characteristics from the silicone elastomer to ensure adequate segmentation of the latter in X-ray imaging data. We implement the approach to evaluate shrinkage in DIW ‘log pile’ samples with three distinct strand arrangements and demonstrate of how filament-level information can be extracted from the X-ray CT data.

Segmenting the target audience for transportation demand management programs: An investigation between mode shift and individual characteristics

Understanding the characteristics of travelers and situations that are more likely to switch from single occupancy vehicles (SOV) to more sustainable mobility options can help transportation agencies develop better behavior change strategies. Existing mode shift programs, however, rarely identify their target audience, which could make the programs less effective. Here, to investigate the demographics and trip characteristics of those who are more likely to shift from SOV to carpooling, public transit, and micromobility (e.g. walking, biking), a matrix decomposition audience segmentation method is proposed and applied on travel survey data. The results of this research show that for short-distance leisure or social trips, young and middle-income people are more likely to shift to these mobility options from SOV. This study provides a comprehensive and profound understanding of the characteristics of the target audience that can inform policies to create more targeted behavior change strategies to reach their sustainability goals.

Movable-molybdenum-reflector reactivity experiments for control studies of compact space power reactor concepts

An experimental reflector reactivity study was made with a compact cylindrical reactor using a uranyl fluoride - water fuel solution. The reactor was axially unreflected and radially reflected with segments of molybdenum. The reflector segments were displaced incrementally in both the axial and radial dimensions, and the shutdown of each configuration was measured by using the pulsed-neutron source technique. The reactivity effects for axial and radial displacement of reflector segments are tabulated separately and compared. The experiments provide data for control-system studies of compact-space-power-reactor concepts.

Radial gradient of solar wind velocity from 1 to 5 AU

Solar wind velocity measurements made by Pioneers 10 and 11 are compared to investigate radial variations in the velocity at heliocentric distances of 1 to 5 AU. Two hundred days of corresponding Pioneer 10 and 11 data are plotted, the velocity profiles for 25-day segments are compared, and the same general pattern of peaks and troughs is found in the corresponding profiles. A comparison of the relative smoothness of the profiles clearly shows that velocity amplitudes in the solar wind stream structure decrease dramatically with increasing radial distance from the sun, although the rate of decrease is not as clear. It is hypothesized that stream-stream interactions play a dominant part in inhibiting the classical radial expansion process in the solar wind and produce scattering centers which prevent the observation of a significant galactic cosmic ray gradient in this region of space.

Verification of LANDSAT imagery for morphametric and topological studies of drainage basins in a section of the western plateau of Sao Paulo State: Tiete-Aguapei watershed

The potential of using LANDSAT MSS imagery for morphometric and topological studies of drainage basins was verified. Using Tiete and Aguapei watershed (Western Plateau) as the test site because of its homogeneous landscape. Morphometric variables collected for ten drainage basins include: circularity index; river density; drainage density; topographic texture; areal and index length; basin parameter; and main river length 1st order and 2nd order channel length. The topographical variables determined were: order; magnitude; bifuraction ratio; weighted bifuraction ratio; number of segments; number of linking; trajectory length; and topological diameter. Data were collected on topographical maps at the scale of 1:250,000 and 1:59,000 and on LANDSAT imagery at the scale of 1:250,000. The results which were summarized on tables for further analysis, show that LANDSAT imagery can supply the lack of topographic charts for drainage studies.

Multispectral and geomorphic studies of processed Voyager 2 images of Europa

High resolution images of Europa taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft were used to study a portion of Europa's dark lineations and the major white line feature Agenor Linea. Initial image processing of images 1195J2-001 (violet filter), 1198J2-001 (blue filter), 1201J2-001 (orange filter), and 1204J2-001 (ultraviolet filter) was performed at the U.S.G.S. Branch of Astrogeology in Flagstaff, Arizona. Processing was completed through the stages of image registration and color ratio image construction. Pixel printouts were used in a new technique of linear feature profiling to compensate for image misregistration through the mapping of features on the printouts. In all, 193 dark lineation segments were mapped and profiled. The more accurate multispectral data derived by this method was plotted using a new application of the ternary diagram, with orange, blue, and violet relative spectral reflectances serving as end members. Statistical techniques were then applied to the ternary diagram plots. The image products generated at LPI were used mainly to cross-check and verify the results of the ternary diagram analysis.
