Comparative energetics of the observed and simulated global circulation during the special observing periods of FGGE

Energetics of the observed and simulated global circulation are evaluated in the zonal spectral domain for the special observing periods of FGGE. The study utilizes GLA analyses of FGGE observational data and parallel simulation experiments. There are noticeable differences in energy transformations between the observation and simulation during SOP-1. These include the baroclinic conversion C(n) by the zonal mean motion and short-wave disturbances, and the nonlinear wave-wave interaction L(n) at the long and short waves. The energy transformations of the short-wave disturbances are much more intense in the simulated circulation than in the observation. However, good agreement is noted in the conversion and dissipation of kinetic energy in the large- and cyclone-wave range n = 1-10. Spectral distributions of global energy transformations at the long- and cyclone-wave range indicate that the SOP-2 simulation agrees more closely with the observed fields than the SOP-1 simulation. Other pertinent points of energetics diagnosis are also included in the discussion.

A numerical investigation of the summer 1980 U.S. heat wave

The diagnostic framework being utilized by researchers at NASA-Goddard in a numerical analysis of the draught which occurred in the U.S. in 1980 described, along with preliminary results. Attention is focused on the wave structure at 500 mb and comparisons of this structure with NMC data from 1963-77 to define conditions during the initiation, maintenance and decay of a draught. Attempts are also being made to develop a simple index for the diagnosis of heat patterns using as input data from the 500 mb analysis. Early studies involving the examination of the effects of varying boundary conditions have revealed a positive contribution from the soil moisture fields and a negative contribution from the North Pacific sea surface temperature during the event. Studies are continuing to characterize phenomena during draught initiation and decay.

The evolution of automation and robotics in manned spaceflight

The evolution of automation on all manned spacecraft including the Space Shuttle is reviewed, and a concept for increasing automation and robotics from the current Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (RMS) to an autonomous system is presented. The requirements for robotic elements are identified for various functions on the Space Station, including extravehicular functions and functions within laboratory and habitation modules which expand man's capacity in space and allow selected teleoperation from the ground. The initial Space Station will employ a telerobot and necessary knowledge based systems as an advisory to the crew on monitoring, fault diagnosis, and short term planning and scheduling.

Procedural knowledge

Much of commonsense knowledge about the real world is in the form of procedures or sequences of actions for achieving particular goals. In this paper, a formalism is presented for representing such knowledge using the notion of process. A declarative semantics for the representation is given, which allows a user to state facts about the effects of doing things in the problem domain of interest. An operational semantics is also provided, which shows how this knowledge can be used to achieve particular goals or to form intentions regarding their achievement. Given both semantics, the formalism additionally serves as an executable specification language suitable for constructing complex systems. A system based on this formalism is described, and examples involving control of an autonomous robot and fault diagnosis for NASA's Space Shuttle are provided.

Overview of the NASA automation and robotics research program

NASA studies over the last eight years have identified five opportunities for the application of automation and robotics technology: (1) satellite servicing; (2) system monitoring, control, sequencing and diagnosis; (3) space manufacturing; (4) space structure assembly; and (5) planetary rovers. The development of these opportunities entails two technology R&D thrusts: telerobotics and system autonomy; both encompass such concerns as operator interface, task planning and reasoning, control execution, sensing, and systems integration.

The error associated with use of various forms of the divergence equation to diagnose geopotential and temperature

This study utilizes a model-generated data set to evaluate the errors associated with the diagnosis of geopotential height using three approximate forms of the divergence equation (DE). The DE was solved on the original sigma-coordinate surfaces of the model to exclude any error produced in the process of interpolating the data from observation points to the coordinate surface of the DE. An inviscid, nonlinear, divergent DE produced rms geopotential height errors as large as 3 m and rms temperature errors of over 26 C in the lower planetary boundary layer (PBL), with minimal errors above 800 mb. Elimination of the isobaric divergence in the velocity field caused additional height errors of 5-6 m and temperature errors of 0.4-1.2 C in the free troposphere. Use of a further-degraded DE without nonlinear terms caused height errors of 10-15 m in the upper troposphere with modestly increased temperature errors. Error fields at all levels had synoptic-scale features, with some mesoalpha structure. No spatial noise was apparent. Use of a temporal spectral filter to eliminate high-frequency modes from the model-generated data did not significantly influence the error associated with use of various forms of the DE.

Northern vs. Southern Hemisphere energy conversions in January 1979

The methodology applied by Huang and Vincent (1985) for the diagnosis of the zonal and eddy energy conversions in the Southern Hemisphere was used to diagnose the energetics of the Northern Hemisphere for the same period (i.e., January 10-27, 1979). It was found that, in both hemispheres, the larger synoptic-scale waves are important in the AZ-AE-KE conversion. However, in the Northern Hemisphere, the long waves make the most significant contribution to this conversion cycle, whereas in the Southern Hemispere, the intermediate waves dominate.

Programmable Pulser

User controls number of clock pulses to prevent burnout. New digital programmable pulser circuit in three formats; freely running, counted, and single pulse. Operates at frequencies up to 5 MHz, with no special consideration given to layout of components or to terminations. Pulser based on sequential circuit with four states and binary counter with appropriate decoding logic. Number of programmable pulses increased beyond 127 by addition of another counter and decoding logic. For very large pulse counts and/or very high frequencies, use synchronous counters to avoid errors caused by propagation delays. Invaluable tool for initial verification or diagnosis of digital or digitally controlled circuity.
