Wavenumber Domain Focusing of Squinted SAR Data with a Curved Orbit Geometry

Synthetic Aperture Radar systems provide raw data that need focusing to achieve full-resolution imaging. Current SAR applications, including interferometry, require accurate, phase-preserving, and precisely co-registered coherent images over large ground swaths with the highest achievable resolution. In addition to these challenges, stripmap SAR data may be acquired with an off-broadside (squinted) geometry, either by design or through platform motion. The precise batch focusing of these large aperture and wide bandwidth data sets is known to require a 2D frequency processing approach. The standard wave domain focusing algorithm, however, is only exact for data acquired on a rectilinear trajectory. We investigate a generalization of the standard omega-k focusing formulation that allows curved data acquisition tracks. The new formulation can be used in conjunction with a known extension for conical, squinted imaging grids. The approximations necessary to allow the generalized geometry are analyzed to determine the range of applicability of the proposed algorithm. The theory is validated using data simulated with parameters similar to the UAVSAR L-band SAR system.

A Method for Measuring Optical Distortion in Curved Optical Surfaces using Moiré Interferometry

In FY2020, KSC’s Applied Physics Lab created a computer based image processing system to allow inspection of the new visors being developed for the Artemis Program. This system was based on an ASTM standard where the distortion of an image is used to determine the optical aberrations in a visor, but this approach is restricted to small fields-of-view (small areas of the visor) and is limited in its ability to reliably detect and measure distortion. From our experience with flat surface inspection, we know that other optical techniques can offer higher sensitivity and accuracy. [1] This memorandum describes a method to model and measure the distortion in curved optical surfaces using moir´e interferometry. We were able to apply this process to examine samples of the xEMU Artemis astronaut helmets. Design details are provided along with examples to illustrate performance.

The Page curve of Hawking radiation from semiclassical geometry

We consider a gravity theory coupled to matter, where the matter has a higher-dimensional holographic dual. In such a theory, finding quantum extremal surfaces becomes equivalent to finding the RT/HRT surfaces in the higher-dimensional theory. Using this we compute the entropy of Hawking radiation and argue that it follows the Page curve, as suggested by recent computations of the entropy and entanglement wedges for old black holes. The higher-dimensional geometry connects the radiation to the black hole interior in the spirit of ER=EPR. The black hole interior then becomes part of the entanglement wedge of the radiation. Inspired by this, we propose a new rule for computing the entropy of quantum systems entangled with gravitational systems which involves searching for “islands” in determining the entanglement wedge.

Exact WKB and the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve for 4d $N$ = 2 pure SU(3) Yang-Mills. Abelianization

We investigate the exact WKB method for the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve of 4d N = 2 pure SU(3) Yang-Mills in the language of abelianization. The relevant differential equation is a third-order equation on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with two irregular singularities. We employ the exact WKB method to study the solutions to such a third-order equation and the associated Stokes phenomena. We also investigate the exact quantization condition for a certain spectral problem. Moreover, exact WKB analysis leads us to consider new Darboux coordinates on a moduli space of flat SL(3,$\mathbb{C}$)-connections. In particular, in the weak coupling region we encounter coordinates of the higher length-twist type generalizing Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. The Darboux coordinates are conjectured to admit asymptotic expansions given by the formal quantum periods series and we perform numerical analysis supporting this conjecture.

On-shell correlators and color-kinematics duality in curved symmetric spacetimes

We define a perturbatively calculable quantity — the on-shell correlator — which furnishes a unified description of particle dynamics in curved spacetime. Specializing to the case of flat and anti-de Sitter space, on-shell correlators coincide precisely with on-shell scattering amplitudes and boundary correlators, respectively. Remarkably, we find that symmetric manifolds admit a generalization of on-shell kinematics in which the corresponding momenta are literally the isometry generators of the spacetime acting on the external kinematic data. These isometric momenta are intrinsically non-commutative but exhibit on-shell conditions that are identical to those of flat space, thus providing a common language for computing and representing on-shell correlators which is agnostic about the underlying geometry. Afterwards, we compute tree-level on-shell correlators for biadjoint scalar (BAS) theory and the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) and learn that color-kinematics duality is manifested at the level of fields under a mapping of the color algebra to the algebra of gauged isometries on the spacetime manifold. Last but not least, we present a field theoretic derivation of the fundamental BCJ relations for on-shell correlators following from the existence of certain conserved currents in BAS theory and the NLSM.

Local quenches, bulk entanglement entropy and a unitary Page curve

Quantum corrections to the entanglement entropy of matter fields interacting with dynamical gravity have proven to be very important in the study of the black hole information problem. We consider a one-particle excited state of a massive scalar field infalling in a pure AdS 3 geometry and compute these corrections for bulk subregions anchored on the AdS boundary. In the dual CFT 2 , the state is given by the insertion of a local primary operator and its evolution thereafter. We calculate the area and bulk entanglement entropy corrections at order $$ \mathcal{O}\left({N}^0\right), $$ O N 0 , both in AdS and its CFT dual. The two calculations match, thus providing a non-trivial check of the FLM formula in a dynamical setting. Further, we observe that the bulk entanglement entropy follows a Page curve. We explain the precise sense in which our setup can be interpreted as a simple model of black hole evaporation and comment on the implications for the information problem.

Islands and Page curves in 4d from Type IIB

Variants of the black hole information paradox are studied in Type IIB string theory setups that realize four-dimensional gravity coupled to a bath. The setups are string theory versions of doubly-holographic Karch/Randall brane worlds, with black holes coupled to non-gravitating and gravitating baths. The 10d versions are based on fully backreacted solutions for configurations of D3, D5 and NS5 branes, and admit dual descriptions as N = 4 SYM on a half space and 3d $T$$^{σ}_{ρ}$ [SU(N)] SCFTs. Island contributions to the entanglement entropy of black hole radiation systems are identified through Ryu/Takayanagi surfaces and lead to Page curves. Analogs of the critical angles found in the Karch/Randall models are identified in 10d, as critical parameters in the brane configurations and dual field theories.

Multi-Galileons in curved space

Using the probe brane construction of higher derivative effective field theories, extended to higher co-dimensions and curved spaces, we construct galileon and DBI theories on de Sitter space with N fields and an so (N) internal symmetry, non-linearly realizing the symmetries of a higher dimensional de Sitter space. In some cases, the theory admits a non-trivial vacuum that spontaneously breaks the so (N) symmetry, and around this vacuum the Goldstone modes have vanishing kinetic terms and become infinitely strongly coupled. This gives an example of a scalar effective field theory with two de Sitter vacua, one of which appears to have Boulware-Deser-like ghosts, and one of which does not.

Planar, curved and twisted molecular nanographenes: Reduction-induced alkali metal coordination

Planar and curved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) attract significant attention as molecular models of fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, thus stimulating broad investigation of chemical reactivity and materials applications of designed nanocarbon π-systems. Non-planar molecular nanographenes (NGs) recently emerge as advanced anode materials in energy storage, showing high reduction limits and enhanced alkali metal intercalation levels. However, the lack of direct structure–property correlations in such complex hybrid systems impedes their further development and utilization. With a focus on alkali-metal-induced reduction of selected PAHs, we herein review original metal binding and intercalation trends, site specific coordination, and distinct carbon framework responses to stepwise electron uptake. Small planar graphene fragments, like triphenylene and coronene, are compared to π-expanded hexabenzocoronenes, followed by the discussion of bowl-shaped corannulene, sumanene and other carbon bowls, as well as bent, warped, and twisted molecular nanographenes. The effect of size, symmetry, and framework topology along with the structural deformation of carbon backbones upon reduction are analyzed, using recent crystallographic examples of alkali-metal intercalated products. In conclusion, the revealed insights into the structures, binding, and metal intercalation in molecular nanographenes should stimulate their future applications as new functional materials.

Spin canting of Ni/CoO/Fe films grown on curved MgO(0 0 1) substrate

Using element-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) measurements, we determined the spin orientations of Ni, CoO and Fe films in Ni/CoO/Fe films grown on a curved MgO(0 0 1) substrate. We find that the vicinal surface of MgO(0 0 1) substrate results in a spin canting towards out-of-plane direction in the Ni and CoO films as a result of the interfacial coupling. The Ni spin canting angle increases monotonically with the vicinal angle in the studied range of 0–17° and the CoO spin canting angle increases more rapidly towards saturation only at a few degrees of the vicinal angle. The uniaxial magnetic anisotropy induced in the Ni layer by the Ni/CoO interfacial coupling is quantitatively determined and is shown to increase monotonically with the vicinal angle. Our result provides a new pathway for tailoring the spin orientation by modifying the substrate surface symmetry in combining with the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic interfacial interaction in thin-film based spintronic devices.

Development of a Flotation Simulator That Can Predict Grade vs. Recovery Curves from Mineral Liberation Data

Flotation is a kinetic process designed to separate mineral fines by control of hydrophobicity. In general, both the recovery and selectivity of a flotation process increase with contact angle. It is difficult, however, to model flotation kinetics using the thermodynamic parameter. In the present work, we consider flotation as heterocoagulation so that the bubble-particle interactions occurring in the pulp phase of a flotation cell can be modeled using the hydrophobic force as a kinetic parameter that can represent the role of contact angles in flotation. Here, the pulp-phase model developed in this manner has been combined with a froth-phase model developed earlier by considering the effect of particles in film thinning kinetics and bubble coarsening (Park et al, 2018). The combined model has been used to develop a flotation simulator that can be used to construct grade vs. recovery curves from feed characteristics (e.g., mineral liberation and particle size) and various operating parameters. The simulator has been tested successfully against a set of bench-scale continuous flotation test results reported in the literature (dos Santos and Galery, 2018).

Probing local electrochemistry via mechanical cyclic voltammetry curves

Understanding the mechanical response of an electrode during electrochemical cycling and its correlation to the device electrochemical performance is crucial to improving the performance of insertion-type energy storage devices, electrochemical actuators, water purification, ion separation and neuromorphic computing applications. Here, we visualized the electro-chemo-mechanical coupling behaviors during charge storage of anhydrous and hydrated WO 3 electrodes via in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and developed the concept of mechanical cyclic voltammetry (mCV) curves. The relationship between electrochemical current and strain was investigated with simplified models and the results revealed that the proton insertion/deinsertion process could be described through potential-dependent electro-chemo-mechanical coupling coefficients which might indicate changes in insertion processes during electrode cycling. The mCV mapping results highlight the local heterogeneity and show that the charging processes varied across the electrode. These local variations could be further correlated to local morphology, crystal orientations or chemical compositions with proper electrode designs.
