Microbial burden prediction model for unmanned planetary spacecraft

The technical development of a computer program for predicting microbial burden on unmanned planetary spacecraft is outlined. The discussion includes the derivation of the basic analytical equations, the selection of a method for handling several random variables, the macrologic of the computer programs and the validation and verification of the model. The prediction model was developed to (1) supplement the biological assays of a spacecraft by simulating the microbial accretion during periods when assays are not taken; (2) minimize the necessity for a large number of microbiological assays; and (3) predict the microbial loading on a lander immediately prior to sterilization and other non-lander equipment prior to launch. It is shown that these purposes not only were achieved but also that the prediction results compare favorably to the estimates derived from the direct assays. The computer program can be applied not only as a prediction instrument but also as a management and control tool. The basic logic of the model is shown to have possible applicability to other sequential flow processes, such as food processing.

Aerospace vehicle water-waste management

The collection and disposal of human wastes, such as urine and feces, in a spacecraft environment are performed in an aesthetic and reliable manner to prevent degradation of crew performance. The waste management system controls, transfers, and processes materials such as feces, emesis, food residues, used expendables, and other wastes. The requirements, collection, transport, and waste processing are described.

Space shuttle GN and C equation document no. 23: Energy dissipation rate guidance for approach phase

The approach guidance routine for taking the space shuttle orbiter from the entry phase of approximately 100,000 feet to the start of the final landing maneuver is discussed. The approach guidance system is a closed feedback loop scheme. The vehicle energy is managed by controlling the rate at which energy is dissipated during a straight in approach. The spacecraft performance during each segment of the approach flight is analyzed. Equations of motion are developed to describe the spacecraft guidance and flight path.

ERTS-1 data applications to Minnesota forest land use classification

The author has identified the following significant results. Color-combined ERTS-1 MSS spectral slices were analyzed to determine the maximum (repeatable) level of meaningful forest resource classification data visually attainable by skilled forest photointerpreters for the following purposes: (1) periodic updating of the Minnesota Land Management Information System (MLMIS) statewide computerized land use data bank, and (2) to provide first-stage forest resources survey data for large area forest land management planning. Controlled tests were made of two forest classification schemes by experienced professional foresters with special photointerpretation training and experience. The test results indicate it is possible to discriminate the MLMIS forest class from the MLMIS nonforest classes, but that it is not possible, under average circumstances, to further stratify the forest classification into species components with any degree of reliability with ERTS-1 imagery. An ongoing test of the resulting classification scheme involves the interpretation, and mapping, of the south half of Itasca County, Minnesota, with ERTS-1 imagery. This map is undergoing field checking by on the ground field cooperators, whose evaluation will be completed in the fall of 1973.

Configuration management during transition for a powered lift STOL aircraft

Presented in this paper are the analytical and moving-base simulation results of a study to improve flight safety and operations of V/STOL type aircraft. One of the more significant and novel aspects of the work accomplished has been the concept and implementation of a configuration management flight control system designed to take the guesswork out of, and improve the operational safety of, transition flight in the region from cruise to STOL.

ATS-F spacecraft - An EMC challenge

The Applications Technology Satellite F (ATS-F) is the latest of a series of satellites for communications, scientific experiments, and data collection. The physical configuration of the spacecraft is examined along with operational characteristics and EMC management and control. Predicted and encountered problems are discussed, giving attention to wiring pick-up and reradiation, input rectification and bias off-set, intermodulation products, harmonics, component degradation, electroexplosive devices, spacecraft test complex vulnerability, and launch environment testing. Approaches used for locating the problems are considered and a description is given of the key factors and constraints in achieving EMC.
