Performance Assessment of Low-GWP Refrigerated Reach-In Display Cases

This project is part of an effort by Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) to evaluate the energy and peak demand savings potential of emerging technologies in the Chicago area. This document focuses on the assessment of energy-efficient, medium-temperature, self-contained refrigerated display cases utilizing environmentally friendly refrigerants. The results of this evaluation will be considered by ComEd and CLEAResult to develop a new energy efficiency rebate measure for ComEd's incentive programs. This rebate measure will become an addition to the Technical Reference Manual. In 2016, the United Nations passed the Kigali Montreal Protocol Amendment, which placed restrictions on certain types of refrigerants. In compliance with this amendment, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) placed a ban on the manufacture of refrigeration systems using hydrofluorocarbons including R134a starting in January 2020. Although the ban has halted manufacture, the EPA continues to allow the use of these refrigerants. Therefore, it is critical to provide incentives for replacing these refrigerants with other environmentally friendly and energy-efficient alternatives.

Porting numerical integration codes from CUDA to oneAPI: a case study

We present our experience in porting optimized CUDA implementations to oneAPI. We focus on the use case of numerical integration, particularly the CUDA implementations of PAGANI and $m$-Cubes. We faced several challenges that caused performance degradation in the oneAPI ports. These include differences in utilized registers per thread, compiler optimizations, and mappings of CUDA library calls to oneAPI equivalents. After addressing those challenges, we tested both the PAGANI and m-Cubes integrators on numerous integrands of various characteristics. To evaluate the quality of the ports, we collected performance metrics of the CUDA and oneAPI implementations on the Nvidia V100 GPU. We found that the oneAPI ports often achieve comparable performance to the CUDA versions, and that they are at most 10% slower.

Evolution of Energy Efficiency Programs Over Time: The Case of Standby Power

Issued in 2001, Presidential Executive Order 13221 directed federal agencies to purchase products with low standby power, with the goal of 1) reducing energy consumption in federal facilities, and 2) drawing attention to the problem of high standby power consumption, with guidance provided by the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP). At that time, standby power was newly recognized as an increasing building energy load. Since then, procurement of products with low standby power have been set in place in acquisition processes, and the purchasing power of the federal government continues to influence manufacturers’ design decisions related to standby power. In recent years, FEMP has shifted effort from direct manufacturer outreach for data collection, to integrating low standby requirement into broader acquisition programs including Energy Star and Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT). Another milestone has been the labeling of low standby products on the GSA Advantage website to simplify and enhance compliance. Looking forward into the program’s future, this question arises “How do we design programs over time to reflect market and technology changes, by adjusting programmatic requirements while maintaining effectiveness?” This paper discusses that question for the case of standby power, which transitioned from covering a single to multiple environmental attributes, both in the context of the program’s past and future.

A709 Code Case Design Parameters

Joint ART Materials/AMMT Program Review to be given at DOE Headquarters on June 5-8, 2023. A709 Code Case Design Parameters regarding preliminary efforts have been started to develop design parameters from test data. Thus far, most of the data evaluated were from the first two commercial heats. Data from these commercial heats continue to support the creep strength advantage of A709 over 316H. Design parameters will be refined as more data are available. Work on the development of other design parameters will begin as data become available.

Techno-Economic Case Study: Low-Temperature Conversion Performance Based on Isolated Anatomical Fractions of Corn Stover

This report summarizes analysis conducted to support a case study under the Feedstock Conversion Interface Consortium (FCIC) focused on techno-economic analysis (TEA) modeling to quantify the process yield and resulting process cost impacts for processing isolated anatomical fractions of corn stover through a low-temperature conversion (biochemical) pathway. It is hypothesized that different individual anatomical fractions of corn stover vary in both composition and recalcitrance, giving biorefineries options in whether and how to deal with fractionated or whole biomass feedstock. By quantifying the techno-economic impacts of this variability, we provide actionable information for end users to understand tradeoffs in conversion system yields and economics in considering feedstock processing decisions at the biorefinery gate. For this study, we worked with FCIC researchers to obtain data on the compositional analysis and conversion performance of whole corn stover alongside three individual anatomical fractions (cobs, husks, and stalks) across key steps of the biorefinery conversion process within FCIC’s research scope—pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. This TEA screening assessment highlighted biorefinery economic trade-offs observed through this approach. Namely, relative to processing whole stover biomass, two of the three anatomical fractions for which composition/conversion data were available (cobs and husks) demonstrated the ability to achieve higher fuel yields and lower minimum fuel selling prices (MFSPs), while the third fraction (stalks) led to the opposite result, as a composite reflection of compositional differences and process convertibility.

Decarbonization of the power sector with CCS: Case study in two regions in the U.S. and lessons for Latin America

This work consists of estimates of potential changes in the total systems cost (TSC) of two RTOs of the United States (U.S.), MISO-N and SPP RTO West, under the traditional decarbonization pathway of replacement of fossil-power plants with variable renewable energy (VRE) and the less traditional pathway of retrofitting fossil fuel units with carbon capture and storage (CCS). Although the power mixes of MISO-N and SPP RTO West are particular to these regions, results can apply to other regions, including Latin American countries that are planning to decarbonize their power sectors. This case study serves to highlight lessons on differences in technology costs between these two pathways, as well as the cost associated with decarbonization rates close to 100%.

Simulating Catalysis with Realistic Pellet Geometries Using Mesoflow: A Case Study of Catalytic Propane Dehydrogenation

We present a case study of catalytic propane dehydrogenation with our open-source multiphysics solver, Mesoflow. The solver was developed to simulate reactive flow coupled to heterogeneous catalytic reactions and deactivation in the context of complex, mesoscale geometry. The method leverages cartesian block-structured adaptive mesh refinement to capture realistic catalyst microstructural features acquired directly from X-ray computed tomography data. A kinetic model for propane dehydrogenation and catalyst deactivation was developed based on temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor experiments. The TAP reactor experiments allow for precise characterization of intrinsic kinetic reaction steps which are implemented into Mesoflow simulations to model the spatial and temporal evolution of reactants, products, and catalyst active sites. The short-term and long-term deactivation behavior is studied by using XCT data collected from fresh and aged catalyst pellets, which exhibit different microstructural features. This study employs time-splitting algorithms to connect disparate reaction and flow timescales, enabling the simulations to achieve realistic deactivation timescales on the order of minutes while the flow time-scales for small particles (100 microns) are several milliseconds. We also introduce a flexible automated python script that writes the necessary files to construct a Mesoflow simulation from user-created chemical mechanisms. We will also introduce a few new features that are added to Mesoflow such as higher order schemes, implicit chemistry integrators and the ability to run on AMD and NVIDIA graphics-processing-units.

Adaptive pinscreen transport case for classified articles

An article transport case comprising an outer shell including opposing sections, first and second pinscreen assemblies, and first and second securement mechanisms. The pinscreen assemblies each include a frame, a securement plate, and a number of pins. The first and second securement mechanisms are configured to be in a secured configuration to retain the first and second sections in a closed configuration and keep the securement plates in a secured position thereby restraining the pins against the article in an article conforming arrangement. The securement plates are in an unsecured position so that the pins are free to translate longitudinally when the securement mechanisms are in an unsecured configuration such that the pins are not restrained in the article conforming arrangement when the shell is open.
