Structural dynamics of laser-ionized cis-stilbene studied by ultrafast electron diffraction

Stilbene has been a model system for studying photoisomerization upon absorption of a UV photon. Although the dynamics of the first excited state have been investigated in great detail, the structural dynamics of cationic states remains largely experimentally unexplored. In this study, the dynamics following ionization via absorption of two UV photons was captured using ultrafast electron diffraction. cis-stilbene (CS) was optically pumped with 267 nm ultraviolet light with two different pump fluences and probed with 3.7 MeV electrons. We compare our experimental results to ab-initio multiple spawning simulations for single-photon excitation and molecular dynamics simulations for ionization in order to separate the contributions from the two channels. We found that with a fluence of 170 mJ cm −2 both the single and two-photon channels are present, while with higher fluence of 280 mJ cm −2 the two-photon channel dominates. We did not observe isomerization of the CS cation and found the main structural motion a to be a vibration of the phenyl rings about the central C–C bond.

Heterogeneous M-N-C Catalysts for Aerobic Oxidation Reactions: Lessons from Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts

Nonprecious metal heterogeneous catalysts composed of first-row transition metals incorporated into nitrogen-doped carbon matrices (M-N-Cs) have been studied for decades as leading alternatives to Pt for the electrocatalytic O 2 reduction reaction (ORR). More recently, similar M-N-C catalysts have been shown to catalyze the aerobic oxidation of organic molecules. Here, this Focus Review highlights mechanistic similarities and distinctions between these two reaction classes and then surveys the aerobic oxidation reactions catalyzed by M-N-Cs. As the active-site structures and kinetic properties of M-N-C aerobic oxidation catalysts have not been extensively studied, the array of tools and methods used to characterize ORR catalysts are presented with the goal of supporting further advances in the field of aerobic oxidation.

Characterization of Tank 11H Samples from Tank Closure Cesium Removal (TCCR) Batch 3 - Intermediate and Final Samples

Savannah River Remediation (SRR) is currently operating the Tank Closure Cesium Removal (TCCR) process to remove 137 Cs from tank waste supernate using an ion exchange process. The TCCR unit processes dissolved salt from Tank 10H through a series of ion exchange columns containing crystalline silicotitanate (CST) and the effluent is then discharged to Tank 11H. Four interim samples pulled from Tank 11H during and just after the completion of processing of Batch 3 through the TCCR process have been analyzed for 137 Cs activity and density. The 137 Cs activity was found to decrease with each subsequent sample, which is consistent with the addition of decontaminated solution to Tank 11H. When compared to the expected composition from mixing the Tank 10H Batch 3 feed with the material already present in Tank 11H, the bulk chemical composition was as expected. A corrosion control sample collected from Tank 11H in June 2020 showed changes in the chemical composition and 137 Cs activity when compared to the composition measured at the end of Batch 2 processing. As there were no additions made to the tank during this period, these changes were attributed to leaching of the solids present in Tank 11H. Additional analyses of the 4 th interim sample are pending and will be documented in a revision to this report.

Determination of the Collins-Soper Kernel from Lattice QCD

We present lattice results for the non-perturbative Collins-Soper (CS) kernel, which describes the energy-dependence of transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs). The CS kernel is extracted from the ratios of first Mellin moments of quasi-TMDs evaluated at different nucleon momenta. The analysis is done with dynamical N f = 2 + 1 clover fermions for the CLS ensemble H101 (a = 0. 0854 fm, m π = m K = 422 MeV). The computed CS kernel is in good agreement with experimental extractions and previous lattice studies.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Associated with Pretreatment Techniques Utilized for Biosugar Production

Less carbon-intensive production of biosugars from lignocellulosic materials can lead to improved manufacturing of biofuels and bioproducts. In this study, the production of biosugars is analyzed to understand the potential of producing bioproducts from biosugars with a low carbon intensity. Life-cycle assessment is conducted on five lignocellulosic feedstocks along with seven pretreatment techniques to produce biosugars as an important platform intermediate for producing bioproducts. The production of electricity using lignin with and without heat integration was also incorporated. In addition, seven bioproducts are analyzed for the estimation of the GHG emissions budget, which represents the emissions available to convert, separate, and upgrade biosugars into bioproducts within the 70% emissions reduction target. Corn stover-deacetylation and dilute acid pretreatment (CS-DDA) provide the lowest GHG emissions for biosugar (0.03 kg CO 2 eq/kg biosugar) and thereby the highest GHG emissions budget for the case of lactic acid production (3.76 kg CO 2 eq/kg lactic acid). Natural gas and chemicals are the major contributors to all of the pretreatment techniques under study. The outcomes from this study can benefit the advancement of upcoming biobased processes that meet decarbonization targets.

The theory governing the strong nuclear force—quantum chromodynamics—predicts that at sufficiently high energy densities, hadronic nuclear matter undergoes a deconfinement transition to a new phase of quarks and gluons. Although this has been observed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, it is currently an open question whether quark matter exists inside neutron stars. By combining astrophysical observations and theoretical ab initio calculations in a model-independent way, we find that the inferred properties of matter in the cores of neutron stars with mass corresponding to 1.4 solar masses (M ⊙ ) are compatible with nuclear model calculations. However, the matter in the interior of maximally massive stable neutron stars exhibits characteristics of the deconfined phase, which we interpret as evidence for the presence of quark-matter cores. For the heaviest reliably observed neutron stars with mass M ≈ 2M ⊙ , the presence of quark matter is found to be linked to the behaviour of the speed of sound cs in strongly interacting matter. If the conformal bound ${c}_{\rm{s}}^{2}\le 1/3$ is not strongly violated, massive neutron stars are predicted to have sizable quark-matter cores. This finding has important implications for the phenomenology of neutron stars and affects the dynamics of neutron star mergers with at least one sufficiently massive participant.
