An advanced structural analysis/synthesis capability - ACCESS 2

An advanced automated design procedure for minimum weight design of structures (ACCESS 2) is reported. Design variable linking, constraint deletion, and explicit constraint approximation are used to effectively combine finite element and nonlinear mathematical programming techniques. The approximation concepts approach to structural synthesis is extended to problems involving fiber composite structure, thermal effects and natural frequency constraints in addition to the usual static stress and displacement limitations. Sample results illustrating these new features are given.

Electrical Characterization of the RCA CDP1822SD Random Access Memory, Volume 1, Appendix a

Electrical characteristization tests were performed on 35 RCA CDP1822SD, 256-by-4-bit, CMOS, random access memories. The tests included three functional tests, AC and DC parametric tests, a series of schmoo plots, rise/fall time screening, and a data retention test. All tests were performed on an automated IC test system with temperatures controlled by a thermal airstream unit. All the functional tests, the data retention test, and the AC and DC parametric tests were performed at ambient temperatures of 25 C, -20 C, -55 C, 85 C, and 125 C. The schmoo plots were performed at ambient temperatures of 25 C, -55 C, and 125 C. The data retention test was performed at 25 C. Five devices failed one or more functional tests and four of these devices failed to meet the expected limits of a number of AC parametric tests. Some of the schmoo plots indicated a small degree of interaction between parameters.

Plaid evaluation of visual access for PDP berthing and deployment

Tests were performed to evaluate visual access for berthing and deployment of the Plasma Diagnostic Package (PDP) in Space Transportation 4 Flight (STS-4). The Panel Layout Automated Interactive Design (PLAID), a 3 D computer graphics package, was used to construct models of the PDP, pallet, orbiter payload bay, the Remote Manipulator System (RMS), and other relevant elements to represent the STS-4 configuration. Several different assemblies were made, each one representing a snapshot of the PDP during berth/deploy maneuvers. Thirty-six views were produced during this test.

A current access, self-structured, multilayered bubble domain memory

Preliminary experimental results are reported on a self-structured, multilayer bubble memory with buried data layer. Stripe domains are used to move carrier bubbles by magnetostatic coupling. An expression is derived for that coupling as a function of thickness of the GGG separation layer. Experimental values of coupling are given as a function of bias field. An expression for stripe curvature as a function of bias field is derived. The performance of seven different current access stripe propagation circuits is reported.

Parallel-Access Alinement Network Using Barrel Switches

Practical version of parallel-access alinement network utilizes two barrel switches for interfacing N parallel memory modules with N parallel processing elements. Switches are interconnected where 17 memory ports (MP's) are connected to 17 processor ports (PP's). Network uses two electronic barrel switches to direct data flow in parallel data-processing system. Each switch can shift a multibit parallel input a predetermined number of places to left or right, end off, or end around in one clock-pulse.

Performance of code division multiple access systems

The performance of code division multiple-access (CDMA) systems is determined using direct sequence spectral spreading. Under relatively ideal conditions, the degradation in system performance as a function of the number of users is shown to have a threshold effect. This basic limitation in the number of users of the system is further limited if the powers are unequal. For two users, system performance as a function of their power ratio also has a threshold effect. System performance as a function of the amount of spectral spreading is determined. The performance of both coded and uncoded systems is predicted.

Outline of a multiple-access communication network based on adaptive arrays

Attention is given to a narrow-band communication system consisting of a central station trying to receive signals simultaneously from K spatially distinct mobile users sharing the same frequencies. One example of such a system is a group of aircraft and ships transmitting messages to a communication satellite. A reasonable approach to such a multiple access system may be based on equipping the central station with an n-element antenna array where n is equal to or greater than K. The array employs K sets of n weights to segregate the signals received from the K users. The weights are determined by direct computation based on position information transmitted by the users. A description is presented of an improved technique which makes it possible to reduce significantly the number of required computer operations in comparison to currently known techniques.

Data management support for selected climate data sets using the climate data access system

The functional capabilities of the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Climate Data Access System (CDAS), an interactive data storage and retrieval system, and the archival data sets which this system manages are discussed. The CDAS manages several climate-related data sets, such as the First Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP) Global Experiment (FGGE) Level 2-b and Level 3-a data tapes. CDAS data management support consists of three basic functions: (1) an inventory capability which allows users to search or update a disk-resident inventory describing the contents of each tape in a data set, (2) a capability to depict graphically the spatial coverage of a tape in a data set, and (3) a data set selection capability which allows users to extract portions of a data set using criteria such as time, location, and data source/parameter and output the data to tape, user terminal, or system printer. This report includes figures that illustrate menu displays and output listings for each CDAS function.

ACCESS computer program for the synthesis of large structural systems

The structural-synthesis computer code ACCESS-3, originally limited to the optimization of relatively simple problems involving truss, membrane, and shear panel elements, has been restructured to make it applicable to structures with a larger number of degrees-of-freedom, design variables, and constraints. The modifications made allow the use of six degrees-of-freedom per node and permit the out-of-core solution of large matrix equations encountered at the analysis stage. Also, finite elements which permit pure bending as well as combined bending and membrane (axial) behavior have been added to satisfy the need for a more comprehensive set of elements. Like its predecessor, the new version of the program combines the approximation concepts with primal or dual formulations to provide an efficient optimization tool.

Performance of a random access packet network with time-capture capability

The Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS) is applied to a digital network supporting the command, control and communication requirements of 105 highly mobile users. User data traffic is bursty and the slotted ALOHA channel access scheme is therefore employed. This paper focuses on the determination of JTIDS system performance in this particular application. Emphasis is directed at the specific time-capture capability of JTIDS. Significant system performance parameters are quantified with analysis and simulation.
