Self-excitation of auroral arcs in a three-dimensionally coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system

This paper presents the first full three-dimensional dynamic simulation of auroral arc formation. The magnetospheric and ionospheric dynamics are represented by one-fluid magnetohydrodynamic equations and two-fluid weakly ionized plasma equations, respectively. The feedback coupling between magnetospheric Alfven waves and ionospheric density waves results in a spontaneous generation of longitudinally elongated striations of field-aligned currents and ionospheric electron densities, which compare very well with many features of quiet auroral arcs.

Predictions for arc polarization

Maps for the prediction of the polarization of light echo arcs are presented. It is noted that the results can be compared with observations in order to test the light-echo model of Katz (1987) and Milgrom (1987) and to determine its parameters. As long as the model assumptions of single scattering and planar geometry remain valid, the polarization is shown to be independent of the geometrical thickness and the optical depth of the dust layer. Cases such as the light source being in the plane of scatterers and arcs consisting of nearly forward scattered light are considered.

Simulations of active ion injection experiments on ARCS 3

The ARCS 3 sounding rocket experiment used two argon guns oriented parallel and perpendicular to the geomagnetic field. The parameters of this experiment have been used in a series of particle simulations in order to interpret ion beam interaction with the multispecies ionospheric plasma. Along with the lower hybrid mode between the electron and the hydrogen gyrofrequencies, ion-ion hybrid modes between the hydrogen and helium gyrofrequencies and between the helium and oxygen gyrofrequencies are identified in the simulations. Besides these cold plasma modes, warm Bernstein modes of the respective ion species are identified. The parallel argon beam injections excite lower hybrid waves perpendicular to the magnetic field because of the finite thermal spread of the parallel beam. Perpendicular ion heating of background hydrogen, helium, and oxygen is comparable in the simulations. Comparisons are made with the wave and particle data from the ARCS 3 rocket experiment.

A spectral radiance comparison of a noise tube and a HgXe arc lamp between 60 GHz and 600 GHz

The relative spectral radiance of a noise tube, model TN-167, designed for the frequency range 90-140 GHz (3.3 mm to 2.1 mm) was compared to that from a 200-watt high pressure HgXe arc lamp over the wavelength region from 0.5 to about 5 mm. A Michelson Fourier transform spectrometer and a lamellar grating instrument were used in conjunction with liquid helium-cooled bolometers of NEP 10 to the -12th to 10 to the -14th watt/(Hz) exp 1/2 to measure relative spectral radiant power. With this instrumental arrangement, the noise tube exhibited a very sharp low frequency cutoff at about 2.2/cm. The HgXe arc lamp emitted more radiant power than the noise tube in the wavelength region below 3 mm (100 GHz) down to 0.5 mm. Above 3 mm, the noise tube had a stronger output. The noise tube spectral radiance shifted to lower frequencies when the input current was lowered from 125 mA to 50 mA.

Aligning Plasma-Arc Welding Oscillations

Tool aids in alignment of oscillator probe on variable-polarity plasma-arc welding torch. Probe magnetically pulls arc from side to side as it moves along joint. Tensile strength of joint depends on alignment of weld bead and on alignment of probe. Operator installs new tool on front of torch body, levels it with built-in bubble glass, inserts probe in slot on tool, and locks probe in place. Procedure faster and easier and resulting alignment more accurate and repeatable.

Ground-Sensing Circuit For Arc Welders

Ground-sensing circuit for arc-welding power supply prevents arc burns at loose ground connections on workpiece. Used with ac supply or dc supply of either polarity. Includes oscillator/detector pairs normally shorted out by ground connections to workpiece. When one or more of these four connections broken, one or more oscillator signals applied across power diodes and detected. Detected oscillator signal trips shutoff relay.

Arc-driven rail accelerator research

Arc-driven rail accelerator research is analyzed by considering wall ablation and viscous drag in the plasma. Plasma characteristics are evaluated through a simple fluid-mechanical analysis considering only wall ablation. By equating the energy dissipated in the plasma with the radiation heat loss, the average properties of the plasma are determined as a function of time and rate of ablation. Locations of two simultaneously accelerating arcs were determined by optical and magnetic probes and fron streak camera photographs. All three measurements provide consistent results.

Supercritical flow past a symmetrical bicircular arc airfoil

A numerical scheme is developed for computing steady supercritical flow about symmetrical airfoils, applying it to an ellipse for zero angle of attack. An algorithmic description of this new scheme is presented. Application to a symmetrical bicircular arc airfoil is also proposed. The flow field before the shock is region 1. For transonic flow, singularity can be avoided by integrating the resulting ordinary differential equations away from the body. Region 2 contains the shock which will be located by shock fitting techniques. The shock divides region 2 into supersonic and subsonic regions and there is no singularity problem in this case. The Method of Lines is used in this region and it is advantageous to integrate the resulting ordinary differential equation along the body for shock fitting. Coaxial coordinates have to be used for the bicircular arc airfoil so that boundary values on the airfoil body can be taken with one direction of the coaxial coordinates fixed. To avoid taking boundary values at + or - infinity in the coaxial co-ordinary system, approximate analytical representation of the flow field near the tips of the airfoil is proposed.

Nonequilibrium shock layer temperature profiles from arc jet radiation measurements

Shock layer temperature profiles are obtained through analysis of radiation from shock layers produced by a blunt body inserted in arc jet flow. Spectral measurements have been made in a nitrogen flow of 54.4 gm/s at an enthalpy of 8.72 MJ/kg. Vibrational temperatures for N2+ are obtained by matching spectral regions from arc jet spectra with spectra generated using the NEQAIR code. Temperature profiles obtained from the radiation layers show a vibrational temperature higher than the rotational temperature near the front of the shock and both temperatures decrease as the flow approaches the body. The spectral measurements are made and analysis completed for four distances, from the surface of the blunt body. The corresponding shock layer thickness is approximately 3.6 cm. Although the shock layer appears to be in thermal nonequilibrium, the measured rotational temperature approaches the single temperature results of viscous shock layer calculations at this test condition.

Rocket measurements within a polar cap arc - Plasma, particle, and electric circuit parameters

Results are presented from the Polar Ionospheric Irregularities Experiment (PIIE), conducted from Sondrestrom, Greenland, on March 15, 1985, designed for an investigation of processes which lead to the generation of small-scale (less than 1 km) ionospheric irregularities within polar-cap F-layer auroras. An instrumented rocket was launched into a polar cap F layer aurora to measure energetic electron flux, plasma, and electric circuit parameters of a sun-aligned arc, coordinated with simultaneous measurements from the Sondrestrom incoherent scatter radar and the AFGL Airborne Ionospheric Observatory. Results indicated the existence of two different generation mechanisms on the dawnside and duskside of the arc. On the duskside, parameters are suggestive of an interchange process, while on the dawnside, fluctuation parameters are consistent with a velocity shear instability.

Are there detectable infrared arcs around supernova 1987A?

The possibility is examined that the recently discovered arcs of reflected light in the LMC around SN 1987A may be accompanied by detectable arcs of thermal IR emission from dust heated by the UV-visual output of the supernova. Detectability depends on the ratio Zeta = Q(a)/Q(p)P, where Q(a) and Q(s) are the visual absorption and scattering efficiencies of the dust and P is the small-angle scattering phase function. Calculations for spherical grains of graphite and silicate are presented. A Mathis-Rumpl-Nordsieck distribution of grain sizes has an effective Zeta of roughly 0.1. Some grain size distributions more heavily weighted toward small grains in the Galaxy have values of Zeta roughly one to two. With current instrumentation, the flux is below or at best close to the detection limit.

Shock layer vacuum UV spectroscopy in an arc-jet wind tunnel

An experimental program is being developed to obtain measurements of the incident surface radiation in the 1000 A to 2000 A range from the shock stagnation region of a blunt model in the Ames 20 MW Arc-Jet Wind Tunnel. The setup consists of a water-cooled blunt model, with a magnesium fluoride forward-viewing window. Radiation incident on the window is optically imaged via an evacuated system and reflective optical elements onto the entrance slit of a spectrograph. The model will be exposed to the supersonic plasma stream from the exit nozzle of the arc-jet tunnel. The resulting bow shock radiation will be measured. It is expected that this experiment will help evaluate the importance of atomic N and O lines to the radiative heating of future Aeroassist Space Transfer Vehicles (ASTVs).

Models of Neptune's arc rings

Models proposed to explain the dynamical confinement of such structures as incomplete arc rings in orbit about the planet Neptune are reviewed and tested against the currently available observational data. It is shown that satellites can confine arc rings to very limited radial and azimuthal extents via a combination of corotation and Lindblad resonances. The resonances can be produced by the same moon or by different moons.
