Increasing Al-Pair Abundance in SSZ-13 Zeolite via Zeolite Synthesis in the Presence of Alkaline Earth Metal Hydroxide Produces Hydrothermally Stable Co-, Cu- and Pd-SSZ-13 Materials

Replacing alkaline for alkaline-earth metal hydroxide in the synthesis gel during the synthesis of siliceous SSZ-13 zeolite (Si/Al~10) yields SSZ-13 with novel, advantageous properties. Its NH 4 -form ion-exchanges higher amount of isolated divalent M(II) ions than the conventional one: this is the consequence of an increased number of Al pairs in the structure induced by the +2 charge of Sr(II) cations in the synthesis gel that force two charge-compensating AlO 4 – motives to reside closer together. We characterize the +2 state of Co(II) ions in these materials with infra-red spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements and show their utility for NOx pollutant adsorption from ambient air: the ones derived from SSZ-13 with higher Al pair content contain more isolated cobalt(II) and, thus, perform better as ambient-air NOx adsorbers. Notably, Co(II)/SSZ-13 with an increased number of Al pairs is significantly more hydrothermally stable than its NaOH-derived analogue. Loading Pd(II) into Co-SSZ-13(Sr) produces an active NOx adsorber (PNA) material that can be used for NOx adsorption from simulated diesel engine exhaust. The critical issue for these applications is hydrothermal stability of Pd-zeolites. Pd/SSZ-13 synthesized in the presence of Sr(OH) 2 does not lose its PNA capacity after extremely harsh aging at 850 and 900 °C (10 h in 10% H 2 O/air flow) and loses only ~55% capacity after hydrothermal aging at 930 °C. This can be extended to other divalent metals for catalytic applications, such as copper: we show that Cu/SSZ-13 catalyst can survive hydrothermal aging at 920 °C without losing its catalytic properties, metal dispersion and crystalline structure. Thus, we provide a new, simple, and scalable strategy for making remarkably (hydro)thermally stable metal-zeolite materials/catalysts with a number of useful applications.

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Low-Density Al 20+x Cr 20-x Mo 20-y Ti 20 V 20+y Alloys

Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) Al 20+x Cr 20-x Mo 20-y Ti 20 V 20+y ((x, y) = (0, 0), (0, 10), and (10, 15)) were computationally studied to obtain a low density and a better mechanical property. The density functional theory (DFT) method was employed to compute the structural and mechanical properties of the alloys, based on a large unit cell model of randomly distributed elements. Debye–Grüneisen theory was used to study the thermal properties of Al 20+x Cr 20-x Mo 20-y Ti 20 V 20+y . The phase diagram calculation shows that all three RHEAs have a single body-centered cubic (BCC) structure at high temperatures ranging from 1000 K to 2000 K. The RHEA Al 30 Cr 10 Mo 5 Ti 20 V 35 has shown a low density of 5.16 g/cm 3 and a hardness of 5.56 GPa. The studied RHEAs could be potential candidates for high-temperature application materials where high hardness, ductility, and low density are required.

Using Al 3+ to Tailor Graphene Oxide Nanochannels: Impact on Membrane Stability and Permeability

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes, which form from the lamination of GO sheets, attract much attention due to their unique nanochannels. There is much interest in controlling the nanochannel structures and improving the aqueous stability of GO membranes so they can be effectively used in separation and filtration applications. This study employed a simple yet effective method of introducing trivalent aluminum cations to a GO sheet solution through the oxidation of aluminum foil, which modifies the nanochannels in the self-assembled GO membrane by increasing the inter-sheet distance while decreasing intra-sheet spacing. The Al 3+ modification resulted in an increase in membrane stability in water, methanol, ethanol, and propanol, yet decreased membrane permeability to water and propanol. These changes were attributed to strong interactions between Al 3+ and the membrane oxygenated functional groups, which resulted in an increase in membrane hydrophobicity and a decrease in the intra-sheet spacing as supported by surface tension, contact angle, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. Our approach for forming Al 3+ modified GO membranes provides a method for improving the aqueous stability and tailoring the permeation selectivity of GO membranes, which have the potential to be implemented in vapor separation and fuel purification applications.

In Situ Synchrotron X-ray Micro-Diffraction Investigation of Elastic Strains in Laminated Ti-Al Composites

Spatially resolved elastic strains in the bulk interior of a laminated Ti-Al metal composite were studied during in situ tensile loading at strains up to 1.66% by a synchrotron-based micro-diffraction technique, namely differential aperture X-ray microscopy (DAXM). For both Al and Ti grains, deviatoric elastic strains were estimated based on polychromatic X-ray microbeam diffraction, while lattice strains along the normal direction of the tensile sample were directly measured using monochromatic X-ray microbeam diffraction. The estimated deviatoric strains show large spatial variations, and the mean values are consistent with the external loading conditions, i.e., increasing tensile strain along the tensile direction and increasing compressive strain along the sample normal with increasing loading. The directly measured lattice strains also show large spatial variations, although the magnitude of this variation is smaller than that for the estimated deviatoric strain. The directly measured lattice strains in Ti grains are largely consistent with the external loading, whereas those in Al grains are in contradiction with the external loading. The causes of the experimental results are discussed and related to both the laminated microstructure of the composite material and the limitations of the techniques.

MOCVD growth of Si-doped α-(AlGa) 2 O 3 on m-plane α-Al 2 O 3 substrates

We reported the growth of (AlGa) 2 O 3 layers on ($10\overline{10}$) α-Al 2 O 3 substrates using cold-wall metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, and the electrical characterization of Si-doped (AlGa) 2 O 3 layers. In the Ga 2 O 3 growth, the α phase was dominant at low growth temperature, achieving the growth rate of 2.4 μm h –1 at 650 °C. Sheet resistance and electrical conductivity of the Ga 2 O 3 layers with a Si concentration of 3 × 10 20 cm –3 were 1 × 10 4 Ω/square and 8.3 S cm –1 , respectively, at the measurement temperature of 500 °C. The Al composition in the (AlGa) 2 O 3 layers was controlled from 0% to 74%. In our initial attempts, we obtained electrically conductive α-(AlGa) 2 O 3 layers by Si doping (2 × 10 –9 S cm –1 in the sample with an Al composition of 56%). Finally, hybrid functional calculations suggest the conductivities are limited by compensation of Si through cation vacancy complexes, and not by the significant amounts of co-incorporated C and N that are predicted to be electrically passivated by hydrogen.

Superconducting properties of annealed Nb-Al-Ge thin films.

Discussion of the superconducting transition temperature and other superconducting properties of annealed Nb-Al-Ge thin films which were prepared by sputtering from a 3Nb-0.8Al-0.2Ge cathode. Annealing was performed in a high-vacuum environment maintained at 10 to the minus 9th torr or less, for times and temperatures near the optimum conditions for bulk Nb-Al-Ge. Films with transition temperatures from 12 to 16 K were annealed and in all cases a rise in transition temperature was observed, with the maximum value obtained thus far being 17.5 K. The current carrying capacity values, already substantially higher for unannealed thin films than for the bulk, were raised even further in the annealed samples, indicating that annealing has no detrimental effects on the flux pinning in these films.

Evidence for association between Ir and Al in L chondrites.

The nature of the Al-Ir association was investigated by plotting the whole chondrite abundance of Ir as determined by Mueller et al. (1971), and the Al abundance for the same chondrites. Ten of the 11 L chondrites plotted show a definite positive trend. The results are most consistent with the condensation mechanism of Larimer (1967) and the prediction of Larimer and Anders (1970).

The photoionization spectrum of neutral aluminium, Al I

The absorption spectrum of Al I has been studied for the wavelength range 1160 to 2000 A by the flash pyrolysis technique. Wavelengths and derived energy levels are reported for 70 new lines converging on the 3s3p(3)P(0) limits of Al II. The autoionization parameters of the 3p(2)P(0)-3p(2)(2)S doublet have been measured. Good agreement is obtained with the experiment of Kohl and Parkinson and the recent calculation of Le Dourneuf et al. The relative photoionization cross section has been measured in the wavelength region 1200 A to 2000 A.

Al-26 in Kenna and other ureilites

A description is presented of the results of a nondestructive analysis conducted with a 42-g slice of the Kenna ureilite. The sample was analyzed in a gamma-gamma coincidence counting system, using a dual-parameter, 4096-channel pulse height analyzer. Data concerning Al-26 and Ne-22/Ne-21 in ureilites and Chassigny are presented in a table. A graph shows the ratio of measured Al-26 activity to that calculated from elemental production rates vs spallation Ne-22/Ne-21 for ureilites and Chassigny. The significance of the data with respect to findings reported by Wilkening et al. (1973) is discussed.

Mercury embrittlement of Cu-Al alloys under cyclic loading

The effect of mercury on the room temperature, high cycle fatigue properties of three alloys: Cu-5.5 pct Al, Cu-7.3 pct Al, and Cu-6.3 pct Al-2.5 pct Fe has been determined. Severe embrittlement under cyclic loading in mercury is associated with rapid crack propagation in the presence of the liquid metal. A pronounced grain size effect is noted under mercury, while fatigue properties in air are insensitive to grain size. The fatigue results are discussed in relation to theories of adsorption-induced liquid metal embrittlement.

Auger depth profiling of Au-Al/x/Ga/1-x/As interfaces and LPE Al/x/Ga/1-x/As-GaAs heterojunctions

An attempt is made to report Auger depth profiles produced in a UHF ion-milling Auger system for intentionally 'graded' Al(x)Ga(1-x)As-GaAs heterojunctions, 'abrupt' growth heterojunctions of the same material, and Au-Al(x)Ga(1-x)As interfaces. It is found that the interface widths of the 'abrupt' growth heterojunctions did not fluctuate greatly from an average value of 110 A and that 'graded' growth samples had interface widths of about 525 to 1500 A. The results for the Au-containing samples indicate that an oxide layer was present between the Au and the Al(x)Ga(1-x)As.

Search for Al-26 effects in the Allende FUN inclusion C1

The Mg isotopic composition of major and minor mineral phases in the Allende inclusion C1 is reported. The results are analyzed in order to establish whether the Mg isotopic composition is the same in different phases and whether Al-26 is present in a sample which exhibited fractionation and unknown nuclear (FUN) effects on other elements. It is found that a small Mg-26 excess exists in C1 and is correlated with the Al-27/Mg-24 ratio, indicating that Al-26 was present in C1 together with the more general nuclear anomalies. The results also reveal that isotopic homogeneity of Mg in Mg-rich phases in C1 is evident in both bulk samples and single microscopic crystals.

Performance of two-layer thermal barrier systems on directionally solidified Ni-Al-Mo and comparative effects of alloy thermal expansion on system life

A promising two-layer thermal barrier coating system (TBS), Ni-16.4Cr-5.1A1-0.15Y/ZrO2-6.1Y2O3 (all in weight percent), was identified for directionally solidified Ni-Al-Mo (gamma/gamma' alpha). In cyclic furnace tests at 1095 C this system on gamma/gamma' alpha was better than Ni-16. 4Cr-5.1Al-0.15Y/ZrO2-7.8Y2O3 by about 50 percent. In natural gas - oxygen torch rig tests at 1250 C the ZrO2-6.1Y2O3 coating was better than the ZrO2-7.8Y2O3 coating by 95 percent, on MAR-M509 substrates and by 60 percent on gamma/gamma' alpha substrates. Decreasing the coefficient of thermal expansion of the substrate material from 17-18x10 to the -6 power/C (MAR-M200 + Hf and MAR-M509) to 11x10 to the -6 power/C (gamma/gamma' alpha) also resulted in improved TBS life. For example, in natural gas - oxygen torch rig tests at 1250 C, the life of Ni-16.4Cr-5.1Al-0.15Y/ZrO26.1Y2O3 was about 30 percent better on gamma/gamma' alpha than on MAR-M509 substrates. Thus compositional changes in the bond and thermal barrier coatings were shown to have a greater effect on TBS life than does the coefficient of thermal expansion.

Nuclear gamma rays from 720-MeV alpha-induced reactions on Al-27 and Si-28

Prompt gamma rays from the interaction of 720-MeV alpha particles with Al-27 and Si-28 were detected and analyzed to identify residual nuclei and to determine cross sections for production of specific levels. No gamma-ray transitions were detected from nuclei heavier than the target. From Doppler broadening, the momentum of the residual nuclei was estimated. The results are compared with previous results for 140- and 1600-MeV alphas on Al-27 and approximately 200-MeV positive or negative pions on Al-27 and Si-28 and fitted to a spallation-yield formula.

Fatigue of Ni-Al-Mo aligned eutectics at elevated temperatures

The elevated-temperature mechanical behavior of two aligned eutectics (Ni-8.1 wt % Al-26.4 wt % Mo and Ni-6.3 wt % Al-31.2 wt % Mo) has been investigated utilizing monotonic and cyclic testing in vacuum. Tensile yield strength and fatigue resistance increased from 25 to 725 C, but then were reduced at 825 C. The fatigue lives of specimens tested at 725 C decreased sharply with decreasing frequency. A shift from surface to internal crack initiation was observed upon increasing the test temperature from 725 to 825 C. Stage II crack propagation was observed at both temperatures, in contrast to stage I cracking at 25 C. The test results are compared to those for other nickel and cobalt-base aligned eutectics to show that the frequency effect on fatigue life is not limited to the Ni-Al-Mo system.

Petrography and classification of Ca, Al-rich and olivine-rich inclusions in the Allende CV3 chondrite

The results of a detailed, systematic petrographic survey of Ca, Al-rich and olivine-rich inclusions in the Allende CV3 chondrite are reported, and a new classification system based on clearly defined and readily applied petrographic criteria is presented. Most Allende inclusions are aggregates containing one or more of three distinct constituents: (1) rimmed concentric objects enriched in Al- and Ti-rich oxide minerals and various amounts of Ca-rich silicates; (2) porous, 'fine-grained' chaotic material enriched in Ca-rich silicates, especially clinopyroxenes and garnets; and (3) porous, 'fine-grained', mafic inclusion matrix, enriched in olivine, pyroxene, and feldspathoids. Two texturally distinct varieties of inclusions consist primarily of inclusion matrix: unrimmed olivine aggregates and rimmed olivine aggregates. Ca, Al-rich inclusions are classified on the basis of the size and abundance of their constituent concentric objects. Some fundamental relationships among Allende inclusions that previusly have not been emphasized are discussed.

Development of powder metallurgy 2XXX series Al alloys for high temperature aircraft structural applications

The objective of the present investigation was to improve the strength and fracture toughness combination of P/M 2124 Al alloys in accordance with NASA program goals for damage tolerance and fatigue resistance. Two (2) P/M compositions based on Al-3.70 Cu-1.85 Mg-0.20 Mn with 0.12 and 0.60 wt. pct. Zr were selected for investigation. The rapid solidification rates produced by atomization were observed to prohibit the precipitation of coarse, primary Al3Zr in both alloys. A major portion of the Zr precipitated as finely distributed, coherent Al3Zr phases during vacuum preheating and solution heat treatment. The proper balance between Cu and Mg contents eliminated undissolved, soluble constituents such as Al2CuMg and Al2Cu during atomization. The resultant extruded microstructures produced a unique combination of strength and fracture toughness. An increase in the volume fraction of coherent Al3Zr, unlike incoherent Al20Cu2Mn3 dispersoids, strengthened the P/M Al base alloy either directly by dislocation-precipitate interactions, indirectly by a retardation of recrystallization, or a combination of both mechanisms. Furthermore, coherent Al3Zr does not appear to degrade toughness to the extent that incoherent Al20Cu2Mn3 does. Consequently, the addition of 0.60 wt. pct. Zr to the base alloy, incorporated with a 774K (935 F) solution heat treatment temperature, produces an alloy which exceeds all tensile property and fracture toughness goals for damage tolerant and fatigue resistant applications in the naturally aged condition.
