PV Inverter Systems Enabled by Monolithically Integrated SiC based Four Quadrant Power Switch (4-QPS) [BiDFET]

The purpose of this project was to develop a new breed of Power Conversion Systems (PCS) for PV integration that is enabled by the newly developed 4-Quadrant Single Die SiC Power Semiconductor Switches (4-QPS) or also referred to as “Bidirectional FET (BIDFET)”. This work includes semiconductor die development, advanced packaging, converter design, development, and testing of 4-QPS enabled hardware prototypes at 1 kW (for single phase residential application) and 10 kW (for three phase commercial application). The BiDirectional Field-Effect Transistor (BiDFET) can enable circuit topologies requiring four-quadrant switches, that were earlier designed using discrete combinations of MOSFETs, IGBTs, GaN HEMTs, and PiN diodes. The monolithic nature of the BiDFET allows lower device count, smaller switch volume, lower inductance, and simpler packaging, and hence more reliable and commercially viable implementation in power electronics converters. The matrix converter topologies, now feasible using BiDFETs, can eliminate the bulky and unreliable dc link capacitors or inductors required for conventional voltage-source or current-source converters in ac–ac and ac–dc applications. The 1.2 kV BiDFET has the potential to disrupt all the applications utilizing 1.2 kV switches, including electric vehicle (EV) drivetrain, bidirectional EV chargers, industrial motor drives, solid-state transformers, datacenter power supplies, elevator drives, dc microgrids, energy storage grid integration, solid-state breakers, etc.

Hierarchical Porous Activated Carbon from Wheat Bran Agro-Waste: Applications in Carbon Dioxide Capture, Dye Removal, Oxygen and Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

Here this work reports an efficient method for facile synthesis of hierarchically porous carbon (WB-AC) utilizing wheat bran waste. Obtained carbon showed 2.47 mmol g -1 CO 2 capture capacity with good CO 2 /N 2 selectivity and 27.35 to 29.90 kJ mol -1 isosteric heat of adsorption. Rapid removal of MO dye was observed with a capacity of ~555 mg g -1 . Moreover, WB-AC demonstrated a good OER activity with 0.35 V low overpotential at 5 mA cm -2 and a Tafel slope of 115 mV dec -1 . It also exhibited high electrocatalytic HER activity with 57 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm -2 and a Tafel slope of 82.6 mV dec -1 . The large SSA (757 m 2 g -1 ) and total pore volume (0.3696 cm 3 g -1 ) result from N 2 activation contributing to selective CO 2 uptake, high and rapid dye removal capacity and superior electrochemical activity (OER/HER), suggesting the use of WB-AC as cost effective adsorbent and metal free electrocatalyst.

A statistical approach to analyzing domain dynamics in ferroelectric crystals using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy

Ferroelectric materials exhibit strong electromechanical coupling, largely influenced by their domain structures. Numerous microstructural studies indicate that smaller domains with higher domain wall density generally enhance domain wall motion, although some inconsistencies have been reported. In this work, we use X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to probe dynamic response in Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -29PbTiO 3 (PMN-29PT) single crystals under applied electric fields. We introduce a two-field correlation approach, adapted from conventional two-time correlation to quantify dynamics. Statistical analysis reveals that both [001]-oriented direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) poled samples show Poisson-like behavior within specific electric field regions. The DC-poled samples exhibit more frequent domain wall jump events but with smaller amount of decorrelation per jump event, whereas the AC-poled samples show fewer jump events with larger decorrelation per jump event. This observation aligns with the prevalence of 109° domain walls in the AC-poled samples, which contribute to more domain wall motion. These findings provide experimental evidence of collective domain wall motion and establish a direct connection between mesoscale dynamics and electromechanical response.

An alcove at the acetyl-CoA synthase nickel active site is required for productive substrate CO binding and anaerobic carbon fixation

One of the seven natural CO 2 fixation pathways, the anaerobic Wood-Ljungdahl pathway (WLP) is unique in generating CO as a metabolic intermediate, operating through organometallic intermediates, and in conserving (versus utilizing) net ATP. The key enzyme in the WLP is acetyl-CoA synthase (ACS), which uses an active site [2Ni-4Fe-4S] cluster (A-cluster), a CO tunnel, and an organometallic (Ni-CO, Ni-methyl, and Ni-acetyl) reaction sequence to generate acetyl-CoA. Here, we reveal that an alcove, which interfaces the tunnel and the A-cluster, is essential for CO 2 fixation and autotrophic growth by the WLP. In vitro spectroscopy, kinetics, binding, and in vivo growth experiments reveal that a Phe229A substitution at one wall of the alcove decreases CO affinity thirty-fold and abolishes autotrophic growth; however, a F229W substitution enhances CO binding 80-fold. Our results indicate that the structure of the alcove is exquisitely tuned to concentrate CO near the A-cluster; protect ACS from CO loss during catalysis, provide a haven for inhibitory CO, and stabilize the tetrahedral coordination at the Nip site where CO binds. The directing, concentrating, and protective effects of the alcove explain the inability of F209A to grow autotrophically. The alcove also could help explain current controversies over whether ACS binds CO and methyl through a random or ordered mechanism. Our work redefines what we historically refer to as the metallocenter "active site". The alcove is so crucial for enzymatic function that we propose it is part of the active site. The community should now look for such alcoves in all "gas handling" metalloenzymes.

The efficacy and ecological impact of mercury sorbents on the physiology and reproductive fitness of Daphnia magna

Environmental mercury (Hg) contamination threatens ecosystems due to its bioaccumulation and toxicity. Effective and sustainable remediation strategies are essential, with carbon-based sorbents like biochar (BC) and activated carbon (AC) gaining attention for their high adsorption capacity and cost-effectiveness. However, their ecological impacts remain poorly understood. This study evaluates the Hg removal efficacy and ecological effects of three sorbents—BC, granular AC (GAC), and AC fiber (ACF)—in a flow-through column system with and without Hg additions. We tested Hg removal at two concentrations (1 and 4 µg/L Hg) and assessed chronic exposure effects on a sentinel and sensitive freshwater organism, Daphnia magna, over 30 days of exposure to the columns’ effluent. GAC removed 100 % of Hg, while BC and ACF achieved 99 % removal. The ACF + 4 µg/L Hg effluent induced 70 % lethality in D. magna after nearly three weeks of exposure, while the GAC effluent significantly reduced fecundity, even in the absence of Hg exposure. In contrast, the BC effluent enhanced reproductive output, likely due to inputs of carbon and nitrogen in the effluent. These findings highlight the need to balance Hg removal efficacy with ecological safety, emphasizing the importance of considering both remediation effectiveness and potential environmental impacts.

Guided skyrmion motion along pinning array interfaces

We examine ac driven skyrmions interacting with the interface between two different obstacle array structures. We consider drive amplitudes at which skyrmions in a bulk obstacle lattice undergo only localized motion and show that when an obstacle lattice interface is introduced, directed skyrmion transport can occur along the interface. The skyrmions can be guided by a straight interface and can also turn corners to follow the interface. For a square obstacle lattice embedded in a square pinning array with a different obstacle radius, we find that skyrmions can undergo transport in all four primary symmetry directions under the same fixed ac drive. We map where localized or translating motion occurs as a function of the ac driving parameters. Our results suggest a new method for controlling skyrmion motion based on transport along obstacle lattice interfaces.

Nuclear Data Sheets for A=233

The present evaluation of the known A=233 nuclides ( 233 Fr, 233 Ra, 233 Ac, 233 Th, 233 Pa, 233 U, 233 Np, 233 Pu, 233 Am, 233 Cm) and 233 Bk represents an update and revision, after 15 years of the previous evaluation of A=233 published by B. Singh and J.K. Tuli (2005Si15). Laboratory identification of 233 Bk nuclide is still considered as tentative. Various decay and reaction data are evaluated and compared. Adopted data, levels, gammas, level half-lives, spins, parities, and configuration assignments are provided. For 233 Fr, 233 Ra, 233 Ac, 233 Pu, 233 Am and 233 Cm, information is available for the respective ground states only. The decay schemes from β - decays of 233 Fr and 233 Ra, and from ε decay of 233 Am and 233 Cm are unknown, while those from β - decay of 233 Ac, and from ε decay of 233 Np are considered incomplete. The α decay of 237 Np to 233 Pa has been studied in detail by many investigators, yet the decay scheme is considered incomplete as several very low-energy transitions are involved, without the knowledge of their intensities, resulting in mismatch of directly measured α feedings and those deduced from γ-transition intensity balances. The decay schemes from α decays of 237 Am, 237 Cm and 237 Cf to respective A=233 daughters are considered incomplete. Particle-transfer and high-spin data are available for 233 Th, 233 Pa and 233 U nuclei, which remain the most extensively studied in this mass chain. However, data for half-lives for the excited states are available only for one level in 233 Pa, and for five levels in 233 U, thus limiting the knowledge of reduced transition probabilities in this mass chain.

Accelerating room air conditioner efficiency in India: Grid, economic, and policy implications through 2035

India is poised for a rapid surge in space cooling demand, driven by rising incomes, urbanization, and intensifying heat. Between 2025 and 2035, the country is expected to add 130–150 million new room air conditioners (ACs). If Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) continue to improve at the historical rate of 2–3 % annually, room ACs alone could contribute over 180 GW to peak electricity demand by 2035-nearly 30 % of the projected national total. This study evaluates the impact of an accelerated MEPS trajectory, proposing to raise the 1-star threshold to ISEER 5.0 by 2027, ISEER 6.3 by 2030, and ISEER 7.4 by 2033. Drawing on engineering cost analysis, stock turnover modeling, and retail pricing data, we find that this pathway could reduce peak demand by over 60 GW, save 118 TWh of electricity annually, avoid 49 MtCO₂ of electricity-related emissions per year, avert ₹7.5 trillion (∼US$85 billion) in power system investments, and yield ₹0.7–2.3 trillion (∼US$8–26 billion) in net consumer savings by 2035. Contrary to affordability concerns, empirical trends show that higher efficiency does not increase AC prices. These results highlight the value of ambitious MEPS as a cost-effective strategy for improving grid reliability, reducing emissions, and advancing consumer welfare in emerging economies.

Treatment of Lagoon Dairy Manure Wastewater via Iron Electrocoagulation, Microfiltration, and Adsorption

Dairy manure wastewater generated by flushing barn cow waste contains nutrients, pathogens, and organic and inorganic contaminants. This study utilized a process consisting of iron electrocoagulation (Fe-EC), microfiltration (MF), and activated carbon (AC) adsorption to treat farm wastewater and explore the reclamation of clean water for irrigation and livestock consumption. Significant removal (>99.9%) of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), phosphorus (P), turbidity, and microorganisms, as well as ions including magnesium, calcium, sulfur, and silica was achieved by the combined EC-MF-AC process. Specifically, a charge loading of ∼37,500 C/L in a continuous-flow EC configuration, followed by MF, achieved more than 95% removal of TOC and COD. Characterization of produced flocs and foam via scanning-electron microscopy with energy-dispersal spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the removal of ions, including calcium, sulfur, and silica. A key finding was the electrocatalytic conversion of nitrogen species to ammonia gas through the intermediate reduction of nitrate/nitrite, which led to ∼60% total nitrogen (TN) removal. AC treatment further improved TN removal to ∼70%. The Fe-EC process also eradicated >99.9% of bacteria. Preliminary process cost assessment, based on recycled materials for EC electrodes, showed significant cost savings (∼2 times) compared to commercial electrodes.

Renewable Activated Carbon Sorbent for the Desulfurization of Liquid Fuels

In recent years, significant efforts have been devoted to the reduction of sulfur levels in transportation fuels in order to reach regulatory limits and reduce the emission of harmful SO x into the atmosphere. In particular, adsorptive desulfurization (ADS) has the potential to produce zero-sulfur fuels without the need for a high energy intensity process, high H 2 pressure, and long process times as in the case of other technologies such as hydrodesulfurization. In this work, we have demonstrated the effectiveness of renewable activated carbons derived from food waste (FWAC) for the ADS of model jet and diesel fuels. The optimal FWAC materials were those fabricated to maximize the micropore volume, providing available sites for the adsorption of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and dimethyldibenzothiophene (DMDBT). The FWAC had a greater sulfur adsorption capacity than commercial AC, Y zeolite sorbents, and AC derived from other biomass sources including miscanthus, coconut shell, and walnut shell. Elemental analysis suggests that the inorganic impurities inherent in food waste, notably K, Ca, P, and Na, may contribute to its improved sulfur adsorption compared to other AC materials. Microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies further demonstrated the presence of inorganic species on FWAC that may provide active sites for the chemisorption of sulfur molecules.

Mitigating CaCO 3 crystal nucleation and growth through continuous ion displacement via alternating electric fields

Mineral crystal formation poses a challenge on surfaces (e.g., heat exchangers, pipes, membranes, etc.) in contact with super-saturated fluids. Applying alternating currents (AC) to such surfaces can prevent surface crystallization under certain conditions. Here, we demonstrate that ion displacement induced by periodic charging and discharging of the electrical double layer (EDL) inhibits both heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation (and crystal growth) of CaCO 3 . Titanium sheets (meant to simulate metallic heat exchanger surfaces) are immersed in super-saturated CaCO 3 solutions with a saturation index >11. We show that at relatively high AC frequencies, incomplete EDL formation leads to an alternating electric field that propagates far into the bulk solution, inducing rapid ion migration that overwhelms the Brownian motion of ions. Electrochemical characterization reveals EDL charging/discharging under AC conditions that greatly inhibits precipitation. Operating at 4 V pp , 0.1–10 Hz reduces turbidity by over 96% and reduces CaCO 3 coverage on the metal plates by over 92%. Based on electrokinetic and crystallization models, the ion displacement velocity (exceeding the mean Brownian velocity) and displacement length disrupts ion collision and crystal nucleation. Overall, the technique has potential for preventing mineral crystal formation in heat exchangers and many other industrially relevant systems.

Reducing dielectric loss and enhancing electrical insulation for multilayer polymer films by nanoconfined ion transport under high poling electric fields

High temperature polar polymers have demonstrated potential for good thermal stability and high dielectric constant at the same time. However, polarization of contaminated impurity ions in polar polymers, even at the ppm level, can significantly increase the dielectric loss at high temperature and low frequencies. One effective strategy to mitigate this problem is to multilayer them with a high temperature nonpolar dielectric polymer to confine impurity ion transport at the nanometer scale. In this study, confined ion transport in high temperature polycarbonate (HTPC)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) multilayer films under high AC electric fields was studied using a direct analytical simulation method. Different from the ion transport under low fields, the ion diffusion model failed to describe the ion transport under high electric fields. An exponential ion distribution profile, which was observed for the DC poling situation, was employed to implement the direct analytical simulation. Confined impurity ion transport under high AC fields was quantitatively understood. As the AC field increased, the mobile ion concentration decreased whereas the diffusion coefficient increased. The decrease of mobile ion concentration was explained by the blockage of impurity ions by the HTPC layers. This knowledge helped in the determination of optimal conditions to polarize impurity ions from the PVDF layers into the HTPC layers. After cooling below the glass transition temperature of HTPC, polarized impurity ions were locked inside the HTPC layers. As a result, increased discharge efficiency and enhanced electrical insulation (i.e., increased dielectric breakdown strength) were achieved for the polarized multilayer films.

Super-resolution surface slope metrology of x-ray mirrors

We present experimental, analytical, and numerical methods developed for reconstruction (deconvolution) of one-dimensional (1D) surface slope profiles over the spatial frequency range where the raw data are significantly perturbed due to the limited resolution of the measurement instrument. We characterize the spatial resolution properties of a profiler with the instrument's transfer function (ITF). To precisely measure the ITF, we apply a recently developed method utilizing test surfaces with 1D linear chirped height profiles of constant slope amplitude. Based on the results of the ITF calibration, we determine parameters of an analytical model for the ITF that is used in the original reconstruction software. Here, we treat surface slope metrology data obtained with the Optical Surface Measuring System (OSMS), using as a sensor an electronic autocollimator (AC) ELCOMAT-3000. The spatial resolution of the OSMS is limited by the size of the AC light-beam-collimating aperture. For the purposes of this investigation, the OSMS is equipped with a circular aperture with a diameter of 2.5 mm. This is a typical arrangement of most AC-based slope profilers developed for surface slope metrology of state-of-the-art x-ray mirrors. Using the example of surface slope metrology of two state-of-the-art elliptically shaped x-ray focusing mirrors, we demonstrate that the developed data reconstruction procedure allows us to significantly improve the accuracy of surface slope metrology with the OSMS over the spatial wavelength range from ~1.6 mm to 7 mm. Thus, the amplitude of the quasi-periodic error characteristic of the deterministic polishing process used appears to be higher by a factor of~2 than is apparent from the rough metrology data. Underestimation of the surface slope errors in this spatial wavelength range can lead to serious errors in the expected performance of x-ray mirrors in synchrotron beamlines, especially at modern light sources utilizing coherent x rays, where the perturbations can lead to increased speckle-like intensity variation.

Tuning the dynamics in Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles for hyperthermia optimization

The AC magnetic susceptibility (ACS) of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was measured between 10 kHz and 4 MHz at different temperatures and in applied DC fields. In this frequency range, magnetostatic interactions impact magnetization dynamics even for dilute assemblies. The ACS spectrum of relaxation frequencies changes both with temperature and the addition of a small DC field. Because both the relaxation peak frequency and amplitude can be tuned with the DC field, these results could be applied to magnetic hyperthermia applications to optimize heat delivery.

Electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of amorphous yttrium iron oxide thin films and consequences for non-local resistance measurements

We present magnetic characterization, charge resistivity, and optical photoluminescence measurements on amorphous yttrium iron oxide thin films ( a-Y–Fe–O), with supporting comparisons to amorphous germanium ( a-Ge) films. We measured magnetic properties with both SQUID magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry. These results not only confirm that a-Y–Fe–O is a disordered magnetic material with strong predominantly antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and a high degree of frustration, but also that it is best understood electrically as a disordered semiconductor. As with amorphous germanium, a-Y–Fe–O obeys expectations for variable-range hopping through localized electron states over a wide range of temperature. We also clarify the consequences of charge transport through such a semiconducting medium for non-local voltage measurements intended to probe spin transport in nominally insulating magnetic materials. We further compare non-local resistance measurements made with “quasi-dc” automated current reversal to ac measurements made with a lock-in amplifier. These show that the “quasi-dc” measurement has an effective ac current excitation with frequency up to approximately 22 Hz, and that this effective ac excitation can cause artifacts in these measurements including incorrect sign of the non-local resistance. Here, this comprehensive investigation of non-local resistance measurements in a-Y–Fe–O shows no evidence of spin transport on micrometer length scales, which is contrary to our original work, and in line with more recent investigations by other groups.

Where to cool off: a geospatial framework for placement of cooling centers

Indoor cooling is essential to reduce heat stress and increase passive survivability during heatwaves. Although air conditioning (AC) is recommended for maintaining indoor thermal comfort, low- and medium-income households in the U.S. often do not own an AC and/or limit AC usage to reduce energy consumption and associated costs, thereby risking their health and safety. With the frequency and intensity of heatwaves increasing, cooling centers are considered an appropriate alternative to indoor cooling and a possible mitigation strategy to prevent adverse health impacts of heat exposure. However, these centers are limited in numbers and not always accessible. This requires (i) developing a geospatial framework using physical and social factors for optimal siting of cooling centers to meet future needs and (ii) ranking of existing and potential cooling centers (schools, libraries, religious institutions) based on their accessibility among vulnerable populations and proximity to healthcare facilities. We developed and deployed a geospatial framework based on the Multi-criteria Decision Analysis approach in five U.S. cities (Los Angeles (LA), Phoenix, Austin, Atlanta, Miami) to evaluate the effectiveness of the framework in ranking cooling centers based on accessibility and population coverage. The results revealed that (i) access to cooling centers varies across cities and 32.2–50.7% of centers are within walking distance of the most vulnerable populations, (ii) vulnerable populations exposed to Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects are more likely to experience energy burden, and (iii) about 21.2–49.4% of population with high energy burden have access to these centers. Considering that more cooling centers are needed to assist energy burdened households alleviate heat exposure impacts, the framework developed herein could be adapted to incorporate other factors (e.g. health impacts, policies) to assess site suitability of existing shelters, identify potential sites for new cooling centers, and geo-target communities where energy efficient emerging technologies could be deployed to reduce heat stress.
