U.S. Efforts in Support of Examinations at Fukushima Daiichi (November 2021 Meeting Notes with Updated Information Requests)

Information obtained from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (Daiichi) is required to inform future Decontamination and Decommissioning (D&D) activities, improving the ability of the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Incorporated (TEPCO Holdings) to characterize potential hazards and to ensure the safety of workers involved with cleanup activities. This information also has important implications for the safety and operation of U.S. commercial nuclear power plants. This document summarizes results from the Fiscal Year 2022 (FY2022) U.S. effort to review Daiichi information and extract insights to enhance the safety of existing and future nuclear power plant designs. This U.S. effort, which was initiated in 2014 by the Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy, is completed by a group of experts in reactor safety and plant operations that identify examination needs and evaluate recent Daiichi examination data to address these needs. Fukushima-related information and associated discussions during forensics meetings benefit operating, new, and advanced reactors. Significant safety insights are being obtained in several areas: system and component performance, radionuclide surveys and sampling, debris end-state location, combustible gas effects, and plant operations and maintenance. In addition to reducing uncertainties related to severe accident modeling progression, these insights have and continue to be used to update guidance for severe accident prevention, mitigation, and emergency planning. As discussed in this document, revised operator guidance was successfully used to improve operator response during a loss of off-site power event at the Duane Arnold Energy Center plant. Reduced uncertainties in modeling the events at Daiichi improve the realism of reactor safety evaluations that inform future D&D activities. U.S. evaluations of information from Fukushima and input regarding future examinations are of interest to several organizations within Japan. Meeting presentations by Japan describe how comments and recommendations documented in prior U.S. forensics effort reports, including consensus information requests developed by forensics effort participants, are considered in future Fukushima D&D activities. As discussed in this report, TEPCO Holdings considered these information requests in their D&D planning activities. An updated list of consensus information requests is included in this FY2022 report.

Summary of Results from November 2021 Qualification Samples for Tank Closure Cesium Removal 1A (TCCR 1A)

Savannah River Remediation (SRR) is currently operating the Tank Closure Cesium Removal 1A (TCCR 1A) process to remove 137 Cs from tank waste supernate using an ion exchange process. As part of that process, Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) receives and analyzes samples in support of the qualification of each batch to be processed. SRNL recently received supernate samples retrieved from Tank 10H as well as in-tank batch contact samples for characterization in support of qualifying Batch 1 for processing through the TCCR 1A unit.

Supply Chain Sustainability Analysis of Renewable Hydrocarbon Fuels via Indirect Liquefaction, Hydrothermal Liquefaction, Combined Algal Processing, and Biochemical Conversion: Update of the 2021 State-of-Technology Cases

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) aims to develop and deploy technologies to transform renewable biomass resources into commercially viable, high-performance biofuels, bioproducts, and biopower through public and private partnerships. BETO and its national laboratory teams conduct in-depth techno-economic assessments (TEA) of biomass feedstock supply and logistics and conversion technologies to produce biofuels. There are two general types of TEAs: A design case outlines a target case (future projection) for a particular biofuel pathway. It informs R&D priorities by identifying areas in need of improvement, tracks sustainability impact of R&D, and provides goals and benchmarks against which technology progress is assessed. A state of technology (SOT) analysis assesses progress within and across relevant technology areas based on actual results at current experimental scales relative to technical targets and cost goals from design cases, and includes technical, economic, and environmental criteria as available.

Residential Solar-Adopter Income and Demographic Trends: 2021 Update [Slides]

The report describes income, demographic, and other socio-economic trends among U.S. residential rooftop solar adopters. The report is based on data for roughly 1.9 million residential rooftop solar systems installed through 2019, representing 82% of all U.S. systems. With its unique size, geographic scope, and level of detail, this report is intended to serve as a foundational reference document for policy-makers, industry stakeholders, and researchers. Key findings include the following: Solar adopters generally skew towards higher incomes, though that trend continues to diminish over time. Solar adopter incomes vary considerably and encompass many low-to-moderate income (LMI) households. Solar-adopter incomes are consistently higher for systems paired with battery storage, for host-owned systems, and for systems installed on single-family homes. Solar adopters differ from the broader U.S. population in terms of a variety of other demographic and socioeconomic measures. State-level comparisons indicate that solar-adopters tend to live in neighborhoods with relatively high non-Hispanic White and Asian populations, and with relatively low Hispanic and Black populations. In conjunction with the report, Berkeley Lab has published an updated accompanying set of online data visualizations that allow users to further explore the underlying data. Berkeley Lab is also offering related analytical support to states, local agencies, and other organizations on issues related to solar adoption among low-to-moderate income households.

Jan-Dec 2021 IC Project: w20_earthquake (Yearly Report)

The simulations conducted under this IC project used an in-house code developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory called HOSS (Hybrid Optimization Software Suite) and its extended version called HOSS-FSIS (fluid-structure interaction solver). HOSS has been under development in LANL’s Geophysics Group since 2004 and was used to simulate the signal propagation in pieces of material with pre-existing defects and also to simulate the near source effects of above ground nuclear explosions. One of the key feature of HOSS is that it is superior to pure finite element method and discrete element method implementations because it allows for a natural transition from continuum to discontinuum when the material breaks or fractures.

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

A Grand Scan of the pMSSM Parameter Space for Snowmass 2021

We present a flexible framework for interpretation of SUSY sensitivity studies for future colliders in terms of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM). We perform a grand scan of the pMSSM 19-dimensional parameter space that covers the accessible ranges of many collider scenarios, including electron, muon, and hadron colliders at a variety of center of mass energies. This enables comparisons of sensitivity and complementarity across different future experiments, including both colliders and precision measurements in the Cosmological and Rare Frontiers. The details of the scan framework are discussed, and the impact of future precision measurements on Higgs couplings, the anomalous muon magnetic moment, and dark matter quantities is presented. The next steps for this ongoing effort include performing studies with simulated events in order to quantitatively assess the sensitivity of selected future colliders in the context of the pMSSM.

2021-2022 Remote Work Study Final Results

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many organizations—from national laboratories to private companies—to change their workforce model to incorporate remote work. This study and the summarized results sought to understand the experiences of remote workers and the ways that remote work can impact recruitment and retention, employee engagement, and career development. Sandia, like many companies, has committed to establishing a hybrid work model that will persist postpandemic, and more Sandia employees than ever before have initiated remote work agreements. This parallels the nationwide increase in remote employment and motivates this study on remote work as an enduring part of workforce models.
