Space Interferometry Mission Instrument Mechanical Layout

The Space Interferometry Mission, planned for launch in 2006, will measure the positions of celestial objects to an unprecedented accuracy of 4x10 to the power of negative six arc (about 1 billionth of a degree).

X-Ray Spectral Evolution of the Crab Pulse

The Crab Pulsar was observed with the X-ray detectors on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) on May 2, 1996. The large area, high time resolution, extended energy range, and moderate energy resolution of the RXTE instruments provided an unprecedented measurement of the Crab pulsar spectrum as it evolved in phase across the 33 msec pulse.

A New Milestone in Large-Scale Ocean Dynamics: The First Three Years of the TOPEX/POSEIDON Mission

The US/France TOPEX/POSEIDON satellite, which has been in orbit since August, 1992, is the first global ocean observing system specifically designed for studying ocean dynamics. The satellite uses a state-of-the-art radar altimeter system to determine the sea surface topography - the height of sea surface relative to a reference ellipsoid-with an unprecedented accuracy, and has returned a wealth of new information on the ocean circulation and its variations.

Parallel Climate Data Assimilation PSAS Package

We have designed and implemented a set of highly efficient and highly scalable algorithms for an unstructured computational package, the PSAS data assimilation package, as demonstrated by detailed performance analysis of systematic runs on up to 512node Intel Paragon. The equation solver achieves a sustained 18 Gflops performance. As the results, we achieved an unprecedented 100-fold solution time reduction on the Intel Paragon parallel platform over the Cray C90. This not only meets and exceeds the DAO time requirements, but also significantly enlarges the window of exploration in climate data assimilations.

Climate Data Assimilation on a Massively Parallel Supercomputer

We have designed and implemented a set of highly efficient and highly scalable algorithms for an unstructured computational package, the PSAS data assimilation package, as demonstrated by detailed performance analysis of systematic runs on up to 512-nodes of an Intel Paragon. The preconditioned Conjugate Gradient solver achieves a sustained 18 Gflops performance. Consequently, we achieve an unprecedented 100-fold reduction in time to solution on the Intel Paragon over a single head of a Cray C90. This not only exceeds the daily performance requirement of the Data Assimilation Office at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, but also makes it possible to explore much larger and challenging data assimilation problems which are unthinkable on a traditional computer platform such as the Cray C90.

(abstract) TOPEX/Poseidon: Four Years of Synoptic Oceanography

Exceeding all expectations of measurement precision and accuracy, the US/France TOPEX/Poseidon satellite mission is now in its 5th year. Returning more than 98 percent of the altimetric data, the measured global geocentric height of the sea surface has provided unprecedented opportunities to address a host of scientific problems ranging from the dynamics of ocean circulation to the distribution of internal tidal energy. Scientific highlights of this longest-running altimetric satellite mission include improvements in our understanding of the dynamics and thermodynamics of the large-scale ocean variability, such as, the properties of planetary waves; the energetics of basin-wide gyres; the heat budget of the ocean; and the ocean's response to wind forcing. For the first time, oceanographers have quantitative descriptions of a dynamic variable of the physical state of the global oceans available in near-real-time.

Discovery of Shell-Like Radio-Structure in SN 1993J

The radio-luminous supernova SN 1993J in M81 offers an unprecedented opportunity to study with high linear resolution the details of the growth of a supernova radio structure by means of the VLBI technique.

(abstract) A Relativistically Expanding Radio Source Associated with GRO J1655-40

GRO J1655-40 was discovered as a new, bright X-ray source with the BATSE detector of the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) on July 27, 1994. During the subsequent radio outburst we completed VLBI synthesis imaging observations at a frequency of 2.29 GHz. An unprecedented angular motion of 65+/- mas per day was reported between two components of complex and disparate morphology ?? The separation rate indicates that the two components were at zero separation near the onset of the radio flare. Similar to the recently reported GRS 1915+105, it seems that the motion of material ejected from a stellar mass compact object with at least a mildly relativistic velocity may explain the observed radio structural changes in GRO J1655-40. The two-week delay between the X-ray outburst and the production of radio components may indicate that the X-rays were produced by a super-critical accretion process onto the compact member of this stellar binary system. This process inhibited or smothered the ejection of radio components until the accretion disk stabilized.

(abstract) Cometary Particles as a Tracer of Jupiter's Stratospheric Circulation

The impact of fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter's atmosphere in July 1994 may provide an unprecedented opportunity to study Jupiter's stratospheric circulation. Recent calculations by Z. Sekanina predict that much of the comet material will be deposited in Jupiter's stratosphere. If so, and if the material is deposited in a confined region (10 000 km or less, horizontally) we can expect a situation analogous to an El Chichon or Pinatubo event for the terrestrial stratosphere. Initially the volatile material will be vaporized and will rapidly recondense. The large ice crystals and dust particles will rain out and be lost to the troposphere. The cloud of small particles which remain may have settling times of more than a year. These submicron to micron particles would probably be easily seen in methane filter images in the near-IR, and possibly in the ultraviolet. An observational program to monitor the dispersal of this cloud or clouds would reveal much about the nature of the circulation. Some predictions about the meridional evolution of the clouds can be made already, based on the meridional circulation model of West et al. unless the impact itself significantly disrupts the annual average circulation well after the initial transients die away.
