Summary of results of January climate simulations with the GISS coarse-mesh model

The large scale climates generated by extended runs of the model are relatively independent of the initial atmospheric conditions, if the first few months of each simulation are discarded. The perpetual January simulations with a specified SST field produced excessive snow accumulation over the continents of the Northern Hemisphere. Mass exchanges between the cold (warm) continents and the warm (cold) adjacent oceans produced significant surface pressure changes over the oceans as well as over the land. The effect of terrain and terrain elevation on the amount of precipitation was examined. The evaporation of continental moisture was calculated to cause large increases in precipitation over the continents.

The Carlisle Lakes-type chondrites - A new grouplet with high Delta(17)O and evidence for nebular oxidation

The petrogenesis of the Carlisle Lakes-type chondrites and their relationship to other chondrites are studied using new petrologic data, especially on mineralogical zoning patterns, and oxygen isotopic analyses of the whole chondrites and some of chondrules. Detailed zoning profiles of mafic silicates are measured in order to determine the environment(s) in which their oxidation states are established. It is concluded that the zoning did not form during crystallization from a melt droplet chondrule but post-dated chondrule formation. Parent-body thermal metamorphism and nebular gas-solid exchange reactions accompanied by condensation of new FeO-rich olivine, utilizing existing olivine surfaces as nucleation sites are considered as hypotheses explaining the zoning. The occurrence of zoned grains in a host that is mainly equilibrated suggests that the equilibration of the Carlisle Lakes-type chondrites occurred prior to final lithification.

Spectral radiation analyses of the GOES solar illuminated hexagonal cell scan mirror back

A ray tracing analytical tool has been developed for the simulation of spectral radiation exchange in complex systems. Algorithms are used to account for heat source spectral energy, surface directional radiation properties, and surface spectral absorptivity properties. This tool has been used to calculate the effective solar absorptivity of the geostationary operational environmental satellites (GOES) scan mirror in the calibration position. The development and design of Sounder and Imager instruments on board GOES is reviewed and the problem of calculating the effective solar absorptivity associated with the GOES hexagonal cell configuration is presented. The analytical methodology based on the Monte Carlo ray tracing technique is described and results are presented and verified by experimental measurements for selected solar incidence angles.

Effects of the Ionosphere on Passive Microwave Remote Sensing of Ocean Salinity from Space

Among the remote sensing applications currently being considered from space is the measurement of sea surface salinity. The salinity of the open ocean is important for understanding ocean circulation and for modeling energy exchange with the atmosphere. Passive microwave remote sensors operating near 1.4 GHz (L-band) could provide data needed to fill the gap in current coverage and to complement in situ arrays being planned to provide subsurface profiles in the future. However, the dynamic range of the salinity signal in the open ocean is relatively small and propagation effects along the path from surface to sensor must be taken into account. In particular, Faraday rotation and even attenuation/emission in the ionosphere can be important sources of error. The purpose or this work is to estimate the magnitude of these effects in the context of a future remote sensing system in space to measure salinity in L-band. Data will be presented as a function of time location and solar activity using IRI-95 to model the ionosphere. The ionosphere presents two potential sources of error for the measurement of salinity: Rotation of the polarization vector (Faraday rotation) and attenuation/emission. Estimates of the effect of these two phenomena on passive remote sensing over the oceans at L-band (1.4 GHz) are presented.

Numerical Simulation of Two-grid Ion Optics Using a 3D Code

A three-dimensional ion optics code has been developed under NASA's Project Prometheus to model two grid ion optics systems. The code computes the flow of positive ions from the discharge chamber through the ion optics and into the beam downstream of the thruster. The rate at which beam ions interact with background neutral gas to form charge exchange ions is also computed. Charge exchange ion trajectories are computed to determine where they strike the ion optics grid surfaces and to determine the extent of sputter erosion they cause. The code has been used to compute predictions of the erosion pattern and wear rate on the NSTAR ion optics system; the code predicts the shape of the eroded pattern but overestimates the initial wear rate by about 50%. An example of use of the code to estimate the NEXIS thruster accelerator grid life is also presented.

Laser Processed Condensing Heat Exchanger Technology Development

The reliance on non-permanent coatings in Condensing Heat Exchanger (CHX) designs is a significant technical issue to be solved before long-duration spaceflight can occur. Therefore, high reliability CHXs have been identified by the Evolvable Mars Campaign (EMC) as critical technologies needed to move beyond low earth orbit. The Laser Processed Condensing Heat Exchanger project aims to solve these problems through the use of femtosecond laser processed surfaces, which have unique wetting properties and potentially exhibit anti-microbial growth properties. These surfaces were investigated to identify if they would be suitable candidates for a replacement CHX surface. Among the areas researched in this project include microbial growth testing, siloxane flow testing in which laser processed surfaces were exposed to siloxanes in an air stream, and manufacturability.

Mars Rodwell Experiment Final Report

Developed by Army engineer Raul Rodriguez at Camp Century in Greenland during the early 1960s, a Rodriguez Well uses heat exchangers and a submersible pump to create a cavity deep under a glacier’s surface and cycle the heated water up an ice shaft, siphoning a portion of the flow for consumption before sending the rest back down to the well. To evaluate the performance of a Rodriguez Well as one of multiple approaches for extracting water from massive ice deposits on Mars, a series of tests were performed at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Energy Systems Test Area (ESTA) Facility under Martian equivalent environmental factors such as atmospheric and water surface pressure and density. These values were then used to create an energy balance model for a Martian Rodriguez Well, replacing the terrestrial environmental factors with the found Martian equivalents in a computer model published by the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL). This report documents the test results and the subsequent findings from running the modified code.

Additive Manufacturing for Rocket Propulsion Applications

Metal Additive manufacturing (AM) is changing how components are being fabricated for current and next generation spaceflights. AM provides many advantages including cost and schedule reduction, enhanced complexity for light-weighting, consolidation of parts, and improved performance using novel alloys and improved designs. This presentation will highlight some of the use cases of AM in rocket propulsion applications, the various processes and attributes for proper selection, and the integrated lifecycle for proper AM use. As AM evolves, there is a need to better understand these lifecycle design constraints such as geometry, microstructure and resulting properties, and surface texture for proper implementation. Ongoing research is being conducted on integral channel heat exchangers, such as combustion chambers and nozzles, using some of the AM processes. The presentation will conclude with a focus on this AM heat exchanger research and how it may be applied for future spaceflight.
