University of Washington Harborview Research and Training Building Environmental Sample Plan for Cs-137 in Soils and Sediments

On May 2, 2019, a release of Cs-137 from a breached sealed source containing 2,800 curies (Ci) (1E14 Bq) of Cesium-137 (Cs-137) occurred at the University of Washington (UW) Harborview Research and Training Building (HRB). The release occurred during removal of the source from its holder within a portable hot cell in the second floor loading dock area. The loading dock and northeast corner of the building above the ground floor were heavily impacted by the release, while the remaining portions of the building and the exterior of the building were minimally impacted.

Sensitivity Analysis of Sediment Coagulations in the Chesapeake Bay

Hydrodynamic models are utilized for fast response to environmental hazards. However, limitations within the models may inhibit their accuracy. A three-dimensional aqueous transport model, ALGE, was developed at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) as a tool for pollutant dispersion. Recently at SRNL, the capability to account for coagulation and break-up of particles to better account for the fate and transport of materials. A sensitivity analysis was performed to determine a threshold for specified particle parameters that still yield accurate results. Dictating these thresholds advances the development of ALGE to become a product for efficient emergency response.

Cation Exchange Capacity, Anion Exchange Capacity, and Mineralogy of F-Area Aquifer Sediments

Strontium-90 (Sr-90) is a contaminant of concern in groundwater and surface water at both F-Area and H-Area Seepage Basins. This contaminant was disposed of, along with other heavy metals and radionuclides, into a series of unlined seepage basins from 1955 until 1988. The acidity of the wastewater increased Sr-90 mobility from the basin soil through the vadose zone and into the Upper Aquifer Zone (UAZ), creating a groundwater plume that discharges into wetlands areas and a local stream called Fourmile Branch.

Evaluating the feasibility of tidal energy extraction at non-operational gas platforms and effects of sedimentation and sea ice in Cook Inlet (Abstract)

Littoral Power Systems (LPS) has been granted a FERC preliminary permit for the Upper Cook Inlet Tidal Energy Project in an area that includes existing non-producing natural gas platforms. LPS is working to understand the feasibility of a 2 MW tidal energy project and is considering multiple technologies, the viability of using the platforms to support deployment and operation of the technologies, as well as the environmental conditions that will interact with tidal energy devices. The proposed TEAMER work will conduct a modeling study to understand 1) current velocity and turbulence; 2) the distribution of sea ice trajectories around the platform; and 3) the likelihood of seabed erosion and deposition through an analysis of shear stress in the seabed near the platforms. The results of this work will contribute to determining the feasibility of the site for tidal energy development.
