Toward the application of the Kalman filter to regional open ocean modeling

A partial differential equation model is defined for ocean meteorological prediction and synoptic analysis. The Kalman filter used for data assimilation is described and applied to the one-dimensional linear barotropic quasi-geostrophic model with periodic and open boundary conditions. The model accounts for eddy scale dynamics in the ocean. The assumptions made in the forecast model are discussed, along with comparisons of the error variances expected with the filter and from an objective analysis method. The effectiveness of the Kalman filter is demonstrated and subsequent efforts to extend the filter to two dimensions are indicated.

Anomalous dust in the open cluster Trumpler 37

New IUE data were obtained towards stars in the open cluster Trumpler 37. Extinction curves derived from these data show that the anomalous dust detected towards HD 204827 and HD 210072 is not unique to those lines of sight but occurs generally in that region of the sky. The dust is apparently associated with the Trumpler 37 cluster, which forms the center of Cepheus OB2. This is a complex region of star formation where the evolution of dust grains through shock waves could be considered likely. A supernova in a slightly older star-forming region of Cep OB2 located next to Trumpler 37 is a possible source of such a shock wave.

Shallow n(+) diffusion into InP by an open-tube diffusion technique

Very shallow n(+) layers have been obtained in InP by using gallium sulfide as a source for sulfur diffusion, and chemically vapor-deposited SiO2 as a cap. Diffusions were carried out from 585 to 725 C in an open-tube system with a nitrogen ambient. The doping profile of sulfur in InP is estimated to be of the complementary error function type with a surface concentration of 5.6 x 10 to the 18th/cc and a diffusion constant of 1.1 x 10 to the -14th sq cm/s at 670 C. Diodes made on n(+)-p junctions obtained by this diffusion technique show ideality factors close to unity and saturation current densities as low as 3.4 x 10 to the -15th A/sq cm, signifying the presence of a defect-free junction. These diffusions, with junction depths in the 400-700 A range, are ideal for solar cell applications.

Radar cross section of an open-ended circular waveguide Calculation of second-order diffraction terms

The radar cross section of an open-ended, semi-infinite circular waveguide is calculated by the geometrical theory of diffraction and the equivalent-current (EC) method. Both single- and double-diffraction terms are included. It is found that the double-diffraction term is stronger than the single-diffraction term for the horizontal polarization at wide-angle incidence. Its inclusion is necessary in order to check with experimental data and the asymptotic expansion of the exact Wiener-Hopf solution. The EC method is used for the single diffraction. On the other hand the double-diffraction term is obtained by using the EC method for axial incidence and geometrical theory of diffraction for wide-angle incidence. These two solutions are matched with a proper matching function. This technique is computationally more efficient than the matching technique of integration over the equivalent currents.

Comparison of open and closed multimegawatt space power systems

One of the major questions that is being addressed at present by SDI Multimegawatt Space Power Project is whether or not space weapon power systems must be closed, i.e., whether effluents from the systems are tolerable. If they are not tolerable, the major penalty that must be paid to close space systems is increased mass. Open systems remove waste heat by producing effluents, e.g., hot hydrogen gas. Closed systems require radiators, thermal storage masses, effluent storage, or refrigeration to remove waste heat. The mass penalty incurred by addition of these devices is so severe that the option of closing space power systems should be avoided if at all possible. The mass penalty is even more severe if the weapon system itself must also be closed.

Loading rate sensitivity of open hole composites in compression

The results are reported of an experimental study on the compressive, time-dependent behavior of graphite fiber reinforced polymer composite laminates with open holes. The effect of loading rate on compressive strength was determined for six material systems ranging from brittle epoxies to thermoplastics at both 75 F and 220 F. Specimens were loaded to failure using different loading rates. The slope of the strength versus elapsed time-to-failure curve was used to rank the materials' loading rate sensitivity. All of the materials had greater strength at 75 F than at 220 F. All the materials showed loading rate effects in the form of reduced failure strength for longer elapsed-time-to-failure. Loading rate sensitivity was less at 220 F than the same material at 70 F. However, C12000/ULTEM and IM7/8551-7 were more sensitive to loading rate than the other materials at 220 F. AS4/APC2 laminates with 24, 32, and 48 plies and 1/16 and 1/4 inch diameter holes were tested. The sensitivity to loading rate was less for either increasing number of plies or larger hole size. The failure of the specimens made from brittle resins was accompanied by extensive delaminations while the failure of the roughened systems was predominantly by shear crippling. Fewer delamination failures were observed at the higher temperature.

An operational open-end file transfer protocol for mobile satellite communications

This paper describes an operational open-end file transfer protocol which includes the connecting procedure, data transfer, and relinquishment procedure for mobile satellite communications. The protocol makes use of the frame level and packet level formats of the X.25 standard for the data link layer and network layer, respectively. The structure of a testbed for experimental simulation of this protocol over a mobile fading channel is also introduced.

Open System Interconnection - NASA program communications of the future

Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) standards are being developed by the ISO and the Consultative Committee on International Telephone and Telegraph with the support of industry. These standards are being developed to allow the interconnecting of computer systems and the interworking of applications such that the applications can be independent of any equipment manufacturer. Significant progress has been made, and the establishment of government OSI standards is being considered. There is considerable interest within NASA in the potential benefits of OSI and in communications standards in general. The OSI standards are being considered for possible application in the Space Station onboard data management system. The OSI standards have reached a high level of maturity, and it is now imperative that NASA plan for future migration to OSI where appropriate.

Postbuckling of eccentric open-section stiffened composite panels

A numerical study of the postbuckling behavior of open-section stiffened composite compression panels is presented with emphasis on the effects of an anisotropic attached flange on results, the strain distribution near collapse, and the change of buckle pattern during postbuckling response. Results are obtained for a blade stiffened panel with orthotropic or anisotropic attached flanges from a new verison of STAGS, a general, branched shell, nonlinear computer program. Comparisons between these results indicate the effects of anisotropic flanges on the results. Elastic strain distributions are obtained from STAGS and indications are given about the collapse loads and modes of a particular panel. Change of buckle pattern is studied using STAGS and a special purpose computer program for long plates. Comparisons are made with experimental results.

Characterization and modelling of open tube diffused n+p bulk InP solar cells

The authors describe the photovoltaic characteristics of an n+p junction solar cell fabricated on bulk InP by an open-tube-diffusion technique. Analysis of the forward characteristics shows that the forward current is dominated by recombination in the quasineutral regions, indicating that the fabrication technique produces a clean junction. Spectral response measurements are analyzed and more realistic boundary conditions are used to model the solar cell to determine important material and device parameters.

A new Be star in an open cluster - NGC 6871-8

Spectroscopic observations of H-alpha show that star eight in the open cluster NGC 6871 is a previously-undiscovered Be star. The H-alpha profile was observed to vary from clear emission to pure absorption over a period of ten days; later observations over a five-day interval show weak emission along with asymmetries and filling in of the profile.

Commentary on interstellar matter associated with 18 open clusters

Information supplementary to that contained in Section 4 of an article entitled, A CO Survey of Regions Around 34 Open Clusters, (Leisawitz, Bash, and Thaddeus) published in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, Volume 70, Number 4, August 1989 is summarized. The information presented here, which describes the interstellar environments of young clusters and some cluster physical characteristics, comes from observations published in the astronomical literature and the author's carbon monoxide (CO) emission line survey, and may help clarify our understanding of the interaction of massive stars with the interstellar medium.

Modal, ray, and beam techniques for analyzing the EM scattering by open-ended waveguide cavities

The problem of high-frequency electromagnetic (EM) scattering by open-ended waveguide cavities with an interior termination is analyzed via three different approaches. When cavities can be adequately modeled by joining together piecewise separable waveguide sections, a hybrid combination of asymptotic high-frequency and modal techniques is employed. In the case of more arbitrarily shaped waveguide cavities for which modes cannot even be defined in the conventional sense, the geometrical optics ray approach proves to be highly useful. However, at sufficiently high frequencies, both of these approaches tend to become inefficient. Hence, a paraxial Gaussian batch technique, which retains much of the simplicity of the ray approximation but is potentially more efficient, is investigated. Typical numerical results based on the different approaches are discussed.

Tidal disruption of open clusters in their parent molecular clouds

A simple model of tidal encounters has been applied to the problem of an open cluster in a clumpy molecular cloud. The parameters of the clumps are taken from the Blitz, Stark, and Long (1988) catalog of clumps in the Rosette molecular cloud. Encounters are modeled as impulsive, rectilinear collisions between Plummer spheres, but the tidal approximation is not invoked. Mass and binding energy changes during an encounter are computed by considering the velocity impulses given to individual stars in a random realization of a Plummer sphere. Mean rates of mass and binding energy loss are then computed by integrating over many encounters. Self-similar evolutionary calculations using these rates indicate that the disruption process is most sensitive to the cluster radius and relatively insensitive to cluster mass. The calculations indicate that clusters which are born in a cloud similar to the Rosette with a cluster radius greater than about 2.5 pc will not survive long enough to leave the cloud. The majority of clusters, however, have smaller radii and will survive the passage through their parent cloud.

A CO survey of regions around 34 open clusters

Results are presented from a systematic search for CO emission from regions around 34 young open clusters in the outer Galaxy. The clusters have well-determined distances ranging from about 1 to 5 kpc and ages not greater than about 100 Myr. It was found that some moderately young clusters have no associated CO emission. All the surveyed clusters younger than about 5 Myr have associated with them at least one molecular cloud more massive than 10,000 solar mass, while the molecular clouds associated with clusters older than about 10 Myr are not more massive than a few thousands solar masses. It was also found that molecular clouds are receding from young clusters at a rate of about 10 km/sec, and that they seem to be destroyed by their interaction with the stars. Sites of ongoing star formation were identified in a number of clouds associated with young clusters.

Ultrasonic Monitor To Determine Crack-Opening Load

New ultrasonic monitor to determine crack-opening load in compact tension specimen uses transducers to pass acoustic wave across crack region. Definite improvement in signal-to-noise ratio. Process possesses substantial immunity from noise caused by operation of load frame and associated parts. In addition to applications for aerospace community, this monitor and concept clearly have general utility in testing of materials and potentially in nondestructive evaluation of solid parts.
