An automated program for reinforcement requirements for openings in cylindrical pressure vessels

An automated interactive program for calculating the reinforcement requirements for openings in cylindrical pressure vessels subjected to internal pressure is described. The program is written for an electronic desk top calculator. The program calculates the required area of reinforcement for a given opening and compares this value with the area of reinforcement provided by a proposed design. All program steps, operating instructions, and example problems with input and sample output are documented.

Airloads near the open port of a one-meter airborne telescope

An infrared telescope is mounted in a cavity in the fuselage of a C-141 airplane. The cavity is sealed off from the rest of the fuselage and can be opened to the outside for viewing. A retractable porous spoiler is installed ahead of the opening to inhibit cavity resonance. The paper presents the mean pressures, pressure fluctuations, spectra, phase, and coherence of the pressures in the cavity and on the fuselage near the cavity, along with pertinent acceleration and torque information for the aircraft structure and telescope. It is shown that a moderate spoiler extension controls resonance in normal flight attitudes and produces a cavity environment with approximately the same turbulence intensity as an attached turbulent boundary layer.

Energy Conversion Alternatives Study (ECAS), Westinghouse phase 1. Volume 4: Open recuperated and bottomed gas turbine cycles

Open-cycle recuperated gas turbine plant with inlet temperatures of 1255 to 1644 K (1800 to 2500 F) and recuperators with effectiveness values of 0, 70, 80 and 90% are considered. A 1644 K (2500 F) gas turbine would have a 33.5% plant efficiency in a simple cycle, 37.6% in a recuperated cycle and 47.6% when combined with a sulfur dioxide bottomer. The distillate burning recuperated plant was calculated to produce electricity at a cost of 8.19 mills/MJ (29.5 mills/kWh). Due to their low capital cost $170 to 200 $/kW, the open cycle gas turbine plant should see duty for peaking and intermediate load duty.

Acoustical modeling study of the open test section of the NASA Langley V/STOL wind tunnel

An acoustic model study was carried out to identify effective sound absorbing treatment of strategically located surfaces in an open wind tunnel test section. Also an aerodynamic study done concurrently, sought to find measures to control low frequency jet pulsations which occur when the tunnel is operated in its open test section configuration. The acoustical modeling study indicated that lining of the raised ceiling and the test section floor immediately below it, results in a substantial improvement. The aerodynamic model study indicated that: (1) the low frequency jet pulsations are most likely caused or maintained by coupling of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic phenomena in the closed tunnel circuit, (2) replacing the hard collector cowl with a geometrically identical but porous fiber metal surface of 100 mks rayls flow resistance does not result in any noticable reduction of the test section noise caused by the impingement of the turbulent flow on the cowl.

Crack opening stretch in a plate of finite width

The problem of a uniaxially stressed plate of finite width containing a centrally located damage zone is considered. It is assumed that the flaw may be represented by a part-through crack perpendicular to the plate surface, the net ligaments in the plane of the crack and through-the-thickness narrow strips ahead of the crack ends are fully yielded, and in the yielded sections the material may carry only a constant normal traction with magnitude equal to the yield strength. The problem is solved by neglecting the bending effects and the crack opening stretches at the center and the ends of the crack are obtained. Some applications of the results are indicated by using the concepts of critical crack opening stretch and constant slope plastic instability.

Potential efficiencies of open- and closed-cycle CO, supersonic, electric-discharge lasers

Computed open- and closed-cycle system efficiencies (laser power output divided by electrical power input) are presented for a CW carbon monoxide, supersonic, electric-discharge laser. Closed-system results include the compressor power required to overcome stagnation pressure losses due to supersonic heat addition and a supersonic diffuser. The paper shows the effect on the system efficiencies of varying several important parameters. These parameters include: gas mixture, gas temperature, gas total temperature, gas density, total discharge energy loading, discharge efficiency, saturated gain coefficient, optical cavity size and location with respect to the discharge, and supersonic diffuser efficiency. Maximum open-cycle efficiency of 80-90% is predicted; the best closed-cycle result is 60-70%.

Buckling behavior and structural efficiency of open-section stiffened composite compression panels

Several experiments with J- and blade-stiffened graphite/epoxy panels were conducted to obtain insight into how well experimental data could be correlated with analysis for the buckling behavior of open-section stiffened composite compression panels. Although some nonlinear behavior was observed during the experiments, adequate correlation with analysis was obtained to justify the use of linear, thin-plate buckling analysis in a minimum-weight design synthesis program for J- and blade-configurations. Results from two design studies using this program are presented. In the first study the minimum weights of Jand blade-configurations for two different material systems (graphite/epoxy and aluminum) are determined subject to buckling and strength constraints for a wide range of the compressive load index. In the second study the minimum weights required for graphite/epoxy blade-stiffened panels to satisfy additional stiffness constraints typical of medium-size commercial aircraft wing structures are determined. Both minimum-weight studies indicate that graphite/epoxy open-section stiffened panels can be designed so that weight savings of 30 to 50% are possible compared with the most efficient aluminum designs.

Factors affecting the open-circuit voltage and electrode kinetics of some iron/titanium redox flow cells

Performance of the iron-titanium redox flow cell was studied as a function of acid concentration. Anion permeable membranes separated the compartments. Electrodes were graphite cloth. Current densities ranged up to 25 mA/square centimeter. Open-circuit and load voltages decreased as the acidity was increased on the iron side as predicted. On the titanium side, open-circuit voltages decreased as the acidity was increased in agreement with theory, but load voltages increased due to decreased polarization with increasing acidity. High acidity on the titanium side coupled with low acidity on the iron side gives the best load voltage, but such cells show voltage losses as they are repeatedly cycled. Analyses show that the bulk of the voltage losses are due to diffusion of acid through the membrane.

Radiation from the open end of a cylindrical or conical pipe and scattering from the end of a rod or slab

The radiation of sound through the open end of a cylindrical or conical pipe of any cross section, or through a hole in a plane wall, is analyzed theoretically. The scattering of a sound wave by the end of a rod or slab is also treated. Only the case in which the wavelength is large compared with a typical radial dimension of the opening or of the end is considered. The method of matched asymptotic expansions is employed. Results on end corrections and reflection coefficients previously obtained by Helmholtz (1860), Rayleigh (1945), and Bazer and Karp (1954), using intuitive arguments, are recovered and verified. Agreement is found with the exact results of Levine and Schwinger (1948) and Vainstein (1948), as well as with the small radial-dimension/wavelength results of Lesser and Lewis (1972), in the cases they treated. In addition various new results are obtained.

Measurement of material parameters that limit the open-circuit voltage in P-N-junction silicon solar cells

The greatest gains in solar energy conversion efficiency of p-n-junction silicon solar cells come from increasing the open-circuit voltage V sub OC; it is important to understand and characterize the material parameters that limit the V sub OC. Strong experimental evidence exists to support the assertion that either an anomalously large minority carrier charge storage or an anomalously small minority carrier lifetime in the quasi-neutral emitter region limits the open circuit voltage. A method is presented for measuring charge storage and effective lifetime. Static and transient measurements are analyzed using physical models of the solar cell characteristics. This analysis yields the emitter charge storage and life-time, which then can be related to the various physical mechanisms, such as energy band gap shrinkage, that have been proposed earlier as responsible for limiting V sub OC.

Bending and torsional vibrations of open tube booms on spinning spacecraft

The mathematical formulation is presented of the coupled bending and twisting equations of motion for open tube booms in spinning spacecraft. The equations are applicable to a general class of open tube booms whose shear center does not coincide with the centroid of the cross section. The emphasis in this paper is on the treatment of the coupled bending and twisting motions. The equations of motion of the center of mass are provided in other references. The results of a simulation of the bending and twisting motion of a circular cross-section boom having a small longitudinal slot on a spinning spacecraft is provided. The simulation demonstrates that the centrifugal forces will induce twisting motion due to offset shear center.

Open-Cycle Gas Turbine/Steam Turbine Combined Cycles with synthetic fuels from coal

The Open-Cycle Gas Turbine/Steam Turbine Combined Cycle can be an effective energy conversion system for converting coal to electricity. The intermediate step in this energy conversion process is to convert the coal into a fuel acceptable to a gas turbine. This can be accomplished by producing a synthetic gas or liquid, and by removing, in the fuel conversion step, the elements in the fuel that would be harmful to the environment if combusted. In this paper, two open-cycle gas turbine combined systems are evaluated: one employing an integrated low-Btu gasifier, and one utilizing a semi-clean liquid fuel. A consistent technical/economic information base is developed for these two systems, and is compared with a reference steam plant burning coal directly in a conventional furnace.

Emergency in-flight egress opening for general aviation aircraft

In support of a stall/spin research program, an emergency in-flight egress system is being installed in a light general aviation airplane. To avoid a major structural redesign for a mechanical door, an add-on 11.2 kg pyrotechnic-actuated system was developed to create an opening in the existing structure. The airplane skin will be explosively severed around the side window, across a central stringer, and down to the floor, creating an opening of approximately 76 by 76 cm. The severed panel will be jettisoned at an initial velocity of approximately 13.7 m/sec. System development included a total of 68 explosive severance tests on aluminum material using small samples, small and full scale flat panel aircraft structural mock-ups, and an actual aircraft fuselage. These tests proved explosive sizing/severance margins, explosive initiation, explosive product containment, and system dynamics.

Study program to improve the open-circuit voltage of low resistivity single crystal silicon solar cells

The results of a 14 month program to improve the open circuit voltage of low resistivity silicon solar cells are described. The approach was based on ion implantation in 0.1- to 10.0-ohm-cm float-zone silicon. As a result of the contract effort, open circuit voltages as high as 645 mV (AMO 25 C) were attained by high dose phosphorus implantation followed by furnace annealing and simultaneous SiO2 growth. One key element was to investigate the effects of bandgap narrowing caused by high doping concentrations in the junction layer. Considerable effort was applied to optimization of implant parameters, selection of furnace annealing techniques, and utilization of pulsed electron beam annealing to minimize thermal process-induced defects in the completed solar cells.

Emergency in-flight egress opening for general aviation aircraft

An emergency in-flight egress system was installed in a light general aviation airplane. The airplane had no provision for egress on the left side. To avoid a major structural redesign for a mechanical door, an add on 11.2 kg (24.6 lb) pyrotechnic-actuated system was developed to create an opening in the existing structure. The skin of the airplane was explosively severed around the side window, across a central stringer, and down to the floor, creating an opening of approximately 76 by 76 cm. The severed panel was jettisoned at an initial velocity of approximately 13.7 m/sec. System development included a total of 68 explosive severance tests on aluminum material using small samples, small and full scale flat panel aircraft structural mockups, and an actual aircraft fuselage. These tests proved explosive sizing/severance margins, explosive initiation, explosive product containment, and system dynamics. This technology is applicable to any aircraft of similar construction.

ISEE 1 charged particle observations indicative of open magnetospheric field lines near the subsolar region

On November 20, 1977, at 0230-0300 UT, ISEE 1 encountered unusual charged particle distributions within the magnetosphere. The three-dimensional distribution observations for energetic (greater than 24 keV) ions and plasma show the development of field-aligned asymmetries in the energetic ion distributions simultaneously with a marked change in plasma flow. It is concluded that the most likely explanation for these observations is that ISEE 1 encountered open magnetospheric field lines at its position within the magnetosphere (1030 LT and 1200 plus or minus 300 km from the magnetopause). Field lines were open near the geomagnetic equator, and the geometry was spatially or temporally variable. Other features of the field line topology are presented.

Explosively Actuated Opening for Rapid Egress

Flexible linear-shaped charge provides explosive energy to create opening and to jettison panel. Container around explosive charge protects pilot from effects of explosion. Exterior steel strip receives most of force of explosion to jettison severed panel. System allows pilot to bail out from left side of airplane by creating opening where no door exists. Egress system is simple and highly responsive, requiring minimal modifications to airplane.

Silicon solar cells with high open-circuit voltage

Open-circuit voltages as high as 0.645 V (AM0-25 C) have been obtained by a new process developed for low-resistivity silicon. The method utilizes high-dose phosphorus implantation, followed by furnace annealing and simultaneous oxide growth to form high-efficiency, shallow junctions. The effect of the thermally grown oxide is a reduction of surface recombination velocity; the oxide also acts as a moderately efficient AR coating. Boron doped silicon with resistivities from 0.1 to 0.3 ohm-cm has been processed according to this sequence; results show highest open-circuit voltage is attained with 0.1-ohm-cm starting material. The effects of bandgap narrowing, caused by high doping concentrations in the junction, were also investigated by implanting phosphorus over a wide range of dose levels.
