Effect of Acid Etching Time in Ti 3 C 2 MXene’s Interlayer Spacing and Conductivity

Materials with sheet-like morphologies often form interconnected networks of layers or flakes, offering continuous channels for electron and ion transport in electrochemical energy storage applications. One such material is the recently discovered class of 2-D transition metal carbides/nitrides, called MXene, whose general formula is M n+1 X n T x (where M = transition metal; n = 1, 2, or 3; X = carbon or nitrogen; and T x = termination group such as –F, –OH, and/or =O). Ti 3 C 2 , one of the most studied MXene, can be synthesized by selectively etching the aluminum layer in Ti 3 AlC 2 (also called MAX phase). The most straightforward technique to exfoliate this layer is by wet-chemical etching with high-concentration hydrofluoric acid (HF). In this study, the effect of etching time on the morphology, interlayer spacing, and electrical conductivity of the resultant MXene was studied.

Continuous Emulation and Multiscale Visualization of Traffic Flow Using Stationary Roadside Sensor Data

With the advent of the next-generation traffic monitoring systems, there has been a significant increase in the spatial-temporal resolution of vehicle mobility data in many cities. Effective analysis and visualization of such data can provide transportation planners with data-driven insights, which can facilitate the understanding of multiscale traffic dynamics. In this paper, we present a web-based traffic emulator for emulating and visualizing near-real-time and historical traffic flows on highways using data from road-side sensors. To construct a continuous traffic flow, the emulator adopts an analytical pipeline that can (a) integrate traffic data collected from discrete road-side radar detection sensors, (b) interpolate traffic conditions (vehicle speed and volume) on unmeasured road segments based on traffic flow theory, and (c) generate lane-specific vehicle trajectories and movements using a mathematically optimized representation of the road network. Our app also provides an integrated visual workflow that allows users to explore the interconnected traffic dynamics using an appropriate traffic flow visualization selected based on the level of detail. We devise two innovative geo-visualization techniques that utilize an animated strips-network representation and a lane usage matrix to visualize lane performances. To ensure a smooth emulation of large-scale traffic flow in an easy-to-access web environment, we implement the emulator using client-side GPU-accelerated techniques. Lastly, we close with a case study that visualizes traffic dynamics of two scenarios - an afternoon peak hour and a traffic accident - in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Our app visualizes the responses of traffic dynamics during different traffic conditions, and to the presence of the traffic accident at different spatial scales.

Decomposable Formulation of Transmission Constraints for Decentralized Power Systems Optimization

One of the most complicating factors in decentralized solution methods for a broad range of power system optimization problems is the modeling of power flow equations. Existing formulations for direct current power flows either have limited scalability or are very dense and unstructured, making them unsuitable for large-scale decentralized studies. Here, in this work, we present a novel sparsified variant of the injection shift factors formulation, which has a decomposable block-diagonal structure and scales well for large systems. We also propose a decentralized solution method, based on the alternating direction multiplier method, that efficiently handles transmission line outages in N-1 security requirements. Benchmarks on multizonal security-constrained unit commitment problems show that the proposed formulation and algorithm can reliably and efficiently solve interconnection-level test systems with up to 6,515 buses with no convergence or numerical issues.

Phase Two of the Array Automated Assembly Task for the Low Cost Solar Array Project

Various top contact metal systems were studied. Only Ti Pd Cu approaches baseline (Ti Pd Ag) quality, but this system shows a lack of long term stability. Aluminum back surface field structures were fabricated and thicknesses of p superscript + material of up to 7.0 microns were achieved with open circuit voltages of 0.59V. A general purpose ultrasonic welder was purchased and tests using various metal foils are under way. During fabrication of the demonstration module, several cells became cracked. Due to redundancy of interconnections, the module was not open circuited but the efficiency was reduced to 8.8%. The broken cell was interconnected with a strap across the back and the efficiency was increased to 11.5%. A cost analysis was made and the results indicate a selling price of $0.56/watt peak (in 1986 with 1975 dollars).

500+ Million Years of Volcanism in Australe

The roughly circular collection of mare deposits in the "Mare Australe" region (38.9°S, 93°E) is ~900 km in diameter. The maria erupted into post-basin impact craters but are generally disconnected from each other. The distribution of maria could reflect what might have been the early stages of other basin filling mare eruptions, but which are preserved in Australe and some farside locations [1-3]. Topographic data fail to indicate a 900-km basin, but gravity and topographic data suggest a 600-km basin in the northern part of Australe [6]. The relationship between the basin and the wider-spread mare deposits is unclear, particularly outside the basin. We utilized images, gravity, topography, and composition to investigate the timing of volcanism in "Mare Australe" to interpret the evolution of magmatism in Australe and how it might relate to other mare sources. Humboldt crater (~3.6 Ga) makes an excellent stratigraphic marker that can be traced across much of the deposits and serves as a stratigraphic calibration for absolute model ages (AMAs) derived from crater size-frequency distributions (CSFDs). We found a range of AMAs from ~3.3 to 3.8 Ga in north Australe, similar to previous studies [4], and there is also evidence for multiple deposits of older cryptomaria. The age range, however, is narrower than for maria in other basins (e.g., Imbrium and South Pole-Aitken [4-5]), suggesting different magmatism in Australe. Most of the mare deposits are >3.5 Ga; younger deposits are co-located in the north basin. The basin may have provided additional pathways for rising magma to the surface over time. We also found evidence of a several interconnected deposits within the north basin. Other, smaller deposits, however, clearly show distinct age differences between units within a single topographic depression (e.g., Lyot crater) and likely represent discrete eruptions. Additionally, there are no floor fractured craters other than Humboldt [6], suggesting that magma generally did not stall out near the surface, also consistent with gravity and (lack of) magnetic anomalies (in contrast to Marius Hills and South Pole-Aitken basin [7-8]).

X-ray Crystal Structure of Thorium Tetrahydroborate, Th(BH 4 ) 4 , and Computational Studies of An(BH 4 ) 4 (An = Th, U)

Here the crystal structure of Th(BH 4 ) 4 is described. Two of the four BH 4 – ions are terminal and tridentate (κ 3 ), whereas the other two bridge between neighboring Th IV centers in a κ 2 ,κ 2 (i.e., bis-bidentate) fashion. Thus, each thorium center is bound to six BH 4 – groups by 14 Th–H bonds. The six boron atoms describe a distorted octahedron in which the κ 3 -BH 4 – ions are mutually cis; the 14 ligating hydrogen atoms define a highly distorted bicapped hexagonal antiprism. The thorium centers are linked into a polymer consisting of interconnected helical chains wound about 4-fold screw axes. The structures of An(BH 4 ) 4 (An = Th, U) were also investigated by DFT. The geometries of [An(BH 4 ) 6 ] 2– , [An3(BH 4 ) 16 ] 4– , and [An 5 (BH 4 ) 26 ] 6– fragments of the polymeric structures were optimized at the B3LYP and/or PBE levels. Most calculated geometries are 14-coordinate and agree with the experimental structures, but isolated [Th(BH 4 ) 6 ] 2– units are predicted to feature 16-coordinate Th IV centers.

Advanced space communications architecture study. Volume 1: Executive summary

The technical feasibility and economic viability of satellite system architectures that are suitable for Customer Premise Service (CPS) communications is investigated. System evaluation is performed at 30/20 GHz (Ka-band); however, the system architectures examined are equally applicable to 14/11 GHz (Ku-band). Emphasis is placed on system that permit low cost user terminals. Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) is used on the uplink, with typically 10,000 simultaneous accesses per satellite, each of 64 kbps. Bulk demodulators onboard the satellite, in combination with a baseband multiplexer, convert the many narrowband uplink signals into a small number of wideband data streams for downlink transmission. Single hop network interconnectivity is accomplished through use of downlink scanning beams. Each satellite is estimated to weigh 5600 lb and consume 6850W of power; the corresponding payload totals are 1000 lb and 5000W. Nonrecurring satellite cost is estimated at $110 million, with the first unit cost at $113 million. In large quantities, the user terminal cost estimate is $25,000.

Guest Editorial: Special section on Resilient Control of Cyber-Physical Power and Energy Systems

Our power and energy systems are becoming more and more integrated and interconnected. The increasing integration of edge devices and dependence on cyber infrastructure provides both the potential for benefits and risks. The integration enables more dynamic and flexible control paradigms while at the same time increasing the cyberattack surface and uncertainty of behavior. Control methodology in this new world must be designed for resilience and must have the ability to withstand, react, and respond to both physical faults and cyber-induced threats. Finally, understanding system resilience under adverse conditions requires studying control performance and how cyber infrastructure can integrate with and support the overall resilience of the system.

Engineered reduction of S-adenosylmethionine alters lignin in sorghum

Abstract Background Lignin is an aromatic polymer deposited in secondary cell walls of higher plants to provide strength, rigidity, and hydrophobicity to vascular tissues. Due to its interconnections with cell wall polysaccharides, lignin plays important roles during plant growth and defense, but also has a negative impact on industrial processes aimed at obtaining monosaccharides from plant biomass. Engineering lignin offers a solution to this issue. For example, previous work showed that heterologous expression of a coliphage S -adenosylmethionine hydrolase (AdoMetase) was an effective approach to reduce lignin in the model plant Arabidopsis. The efficacy of this engineering strategy remains to be evaluated in bioenergy crops. Results We studied the impact of expressing AdoMetase on lignin synthesis in sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor L. Moench). Lignin content, monomer composition, and size, as well as biomass saccharification efficiency were determined in transgenic sorghum lines. The transcriptome and metabolome were analyzed in stems at three developmental stages. Plant growth and biomass composition was further evaluated under field conditions. Results evidenced that lignin was reduced by 18% in the best transgenic line, presumably due to reduced activity of the S -adenosylmethionine-dependent O -methyltransferases involved in lignin synthesis. The modified sorghum features altered lignin monomer composition and increased lignin molecular weights. The degree of methylation of glucuronic acid on xylan was reduced. These changes enabled a ~20% increase in glucose yield after biomass pretreatment and saccharification compared to wild type. RNA-seq and untargeted metabolomic analyses evidenced some pleiotropic effects associated with AdoMetase expression. The transgenic sorghum showed developmental delay and reduced biomass yields at harvest, especially under field growing conditions. Conclusions The expression of AdoMetase represents an effective lignin engineering approach in sorghum. However, considering that this strategy potentially impacts multiple S -adenosylmethionine-dependent methyltransferases, adequate promoters for fine-tuning AdoMetase expression will be needed to mitigate yield penalty.

Institutional Framework of Variable Renewable Energy Forecasting in India

The share of variable renewable energy (VRE) in India is growing rapidly, with a national goal of reaching 50% capacity from non-fossil fuel generation by 2030. One implication of this growth is the need for improved VRE forecasting methods. For this reason, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India commissioned this study with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the United States, and the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) in India. The objective of this study was to review the existing institutional framework and suggest changes needed to support the plans for large-scale VRE integration in the country. To achieve that objective, the authors consulted local stakeholders about the status of VRE forecasting in India, reviewed existing studies, and examined VRE forecasting methods around the world to identify best practices. Based on those best practices, the study presents six potential approaches to improve the VRE forecasting framework in India. Approaches include incentivizing VRE forecast improvement and use of the most accurate VRE forecast, creating an institution that will optimize VRE forecasts while maintaining and ensuring access to necessary data for forecasting, implementing a review and certification process for VRE forecast providers, forecasting closer to dispatch time and allowing for more frequent forecast revisions, increasing the frequency of weather forecasts, and aggregating VRE forecasts at the point of interconnection.

A Data-Driven Exploration of the Impact of Renewable Energy on Inter-Area Oscillations in the U.S. Eastern Interconnection

As increasing amounts of renewable energy (RE) resources are incorporated into the bulk-power grid, power system oscillations are expected to change. This work investigates how RE generation impacts the frequency and damping ratio (DR) of two dominant inter-area modes in the U.S. Eastern Interconnection (EI) using regularly updated estimates collected over a 12-month period. Quantile regression is used to derive the correlation between operating conditions and mode properties, and a bootstrap method is used to quantify the uncertainty associated with the correlation estimates. Results show that with an increase in system load, the frequency of a mode decreases and DR increases. Evidence that increasing RE generation results in an increase in frequency and decline in DR was found for one of the two modes studied. This work shows that increasing RE levels will impact the properties of inter-area oscillations in the EI, but it does not indicate the presence of immediate threats to grid stability. The outlined approach can be used to periodically assess changing mode properties as RE levels continue to grow and flag stability concerns before they become serious reliability threats.

Syncytia in Fungi

Filamentous fungi typically grow as interconnected multinucleate syncytia that can be microscopic to many hectares in size. Mechanistic details and rules that govern the formation and function of these multinucleate syncytia are largely unexplored, including details on syncytial morphology and the regulatory controls of cellular and molecular processes. Recent discoveries have revealed various adaptations that enable fungal syncytia to accomplish coordinated behaviors, including cell growth, nuclear division, secretion, communication, and adaptation of the hyphal network for mixing nuclear and cytoplasmic organelles. In this review, we highlight recent studies using advanced technologies to define rules that govern organizing principles of hyphal and colony differentiation, including various aspects of nuclear and mitochondrial cooperation versus competition. We place these findings into context with previous foundational literature and present still unanswered questions on mechanistic aspects, function, and morphological diversity of fungal syncytia across the fungal kingdom.

Environmental requirements for flat plate photovoltaic modules for terrestrial applications

The environmental test requirements that have been developed for flat plate modules purchased through Department of Energy funding are described. Concurrent with the selection of the initial qualification tests from space program experience - temperature cycling and humidity - surveys of existing photovoltaic systems in the field revealed that arrays were experiencing the following failure modes: interconnect breakage, delamination, and electrical termination corrosion. These coupled with application-dependent considerations led to the development of additional qualification tests, such as cyclic pressure loading, warped mounting surface, and hail. Rationale for the selection of tests, their levels and durations is described. Comparisons between field-observed degradation and test-induced degradation show a positive correlation with some of the observed field effects. Also, the tests are proving useful for detecting design, process, and workmanship deficiencies. The status of study efforts for the development of environmental requirements for field-related problems is reviewed.

Aircraft Lightning Electromagnetic Environment Measurement

This paper outlines a NASA project plan for demonstrating a prototype lightning strike measurement system that is suitable for installation onto research aircraft that already operate in thunderstorms. This work builds upon past data from the NASA F106, FAA CV-580, and Transall C-180 flight projects, SAE ARP5412, and the European ILDAS Program. The primary focus is to capture airframe current waveforms during attachment, but may also consider pre and post-attachment current, electric field, and radiated field phenomena. New sensor technologies are being developed for this system, including a fiber-optic Faraday polarization sensor that measures lightning current waveforms from DC to over several Megahertz, and has dynamic range covering hundreds-of-volts to tens-of-thousands-of-volts. A study of the electromagnetic emission spectrum of lightning (including radio wave, microwave, optical, X-Rays and Gamma-Rays), and a compilation of aircraft transfer-function data (including composite aircraft) are included, to aid in the development of other new lightning environment sensors, their placement on-board research aircraft, and triggering of the onboard instrumentation system. The instrumentation system will leverage recent advances in high-speed, high dynamic range, deep memory data acquisition equipment, and fiber-optic interconnect.

Correlation between Generator Trips and Locational Marginal Prices (LMPs)

Generally, disturbances in an interconnected network have an influence the stability and the economy of the power grid. Some phenomenon such as load shedding have proven to have a huge impact on real time electricity prices. Generation trip is considered one of the most common events in a power grid that may change the wholesale electricity market. In this paper, a locational marginal price (LMP) measure is used to notice how the electricity prices change with generator trip events at different locations of U.S. power grid. The study results help to find whether there is a clear correlation between generator trips and the changes in the electricity real-time market.

Experimental Validation of a Modular All-Electric Power Take-Off Topology for Wave Energy Converter Enabling Marine Renewable Energy Interconnection

Power electronic converters are an enabling technology for the emerging marine energy applications, such as using ocean waves to produce electricity. This paper outlines the power take-off system and its key components used in a wave energy converter offering modularity and scalability to generate power efficiently. The proposed power take-off system was implemented based on a modular multilevel converter and could be deployed to convert any alternating current electrical energy to a different alternating current for interconnection to grid or non-grid applications. Examples of widespread deployment are supplying electricity to coastal communities or producing clean drinking water. The analysis using both the simulation tests and laboratory experiments verified the design objectives and basic functionality of the developed power take-off system. An acceptable response using a field programmable gate array-based controlled laboratory testbench was achieved, complying with guidelines specified in the prevalent industry standards. Seamless operation during steady-state and transients for the studied wave energy converter was achieved as supported by the obtained results. The key findings of this work were experimentally examined under different load conditions, direct current bus voltage fluctuations, and generator speed–torque regulation. The ability of the power take-off system to generate high-power quality of the waveforms, e.g., against adhering to the IEEE 519-2022 standard for total harmonic distortion limits, is also confirmed.
