Effects of cyclical environments on high-performance multi-layer insulation materials.

Results of a test program designed to determine the effects of 100 temperature and compressive loading cycles on several multilayer insulation materials and composites. A total of four reflector materials, four separator materials, eight face-sheet systems, and one fastener material were subjected to 100 temperature cycles from -320 to 400 or 650 F. Generic types of materials studied included Mylar, Kapton, Dacron, Nomex, and Beta Glass. The temperature cycling was followed by visual inspection, metal adhesion tests on the reflectors, and tensile tests of the face sheets, fastener, and separators. A total of six composites were subjected to compressive cycles between zero and 0.15 psi, and density changes were measured. Application of the experimental results to the shuttle orbiter is discussed.

High-performance low-power CMOS memories using silicon-on-sapphire technology.

MOS/silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) technology is shown to permit the realization of large-scale integrated arrays that combine the best features of monolithic bipolar and MOS technologies. The perfect isolation and reduced capacitance of SOS technology make possible static MOS circuits with nearly an order-of-magnitude improvement in speed and dynamic power dissipation over their monolithic counterparts. CMOS/SOS memory arrays have been fabricated with speeds comparable to TTL bipolar memory arrays even when operated at TTL compatible levels. Quiescent power dissipation of two described arrays is typically less than 1 microwatt/bit. The SOS/MOS technology is compatible with both aluminum and self-aligned silicon-gate processing.

High-performance space shuttle auxiliary propellant valve system

Several potential valve closures for the space shuttle auxiliary propulsion system (SS/APS) were investigated analytically and experimentally in a modeling program. The most promising of these were analyzed and experimentally evaluated in a full-size functional valve test fixture of novel design. The engineering investigations conducted for both model and scale evaluations of the SS/APS valve closures and functional valve fixture are described. Preliminary designs, laboratory tests, and overall valve test fixture designs are presented, and a final recommended flightweight SS/APS valve design is presented.

Investigation of high-performance insulation application problems

The design, fabrication, and performance of a practical, flightworthy, multilayer insulation (MLI) system for a Modular Nuclear Vehicle (MNV) LH2 propellant tank is presented. An MLI system is now available. It may be applied to the MNV or any other space vehicle requiring MLI for thermal control. This design concept was adapted for an MLI installation that covered and was successfully flown on the Skylab forward dome.

Optimal controller design for high performance aircraft undergoing large disturbance angles

An examination of two aircraft controller structures applicable to on-line implementation was conducted. The two controllers, a linear regulator model follower and an inner-product model follower, were applied to the lateral dynamics of the F8-C aircraft. For the purposes of this research effort, the lateral dynamics of the F8-C aircraft were considered. The controller designs were evaluated for four flight conditions. Additionally, effects of pilot input, rapid variation of flight condition and control surface rate and magnitude deflection limits were considered.

Tailor making high performance graphite fiber reinforced PMR polyimides

Studies performed to demonstrate the feasibility of using the polymerization of monomer reactants (PMR) approach to tailor make processable polyimide matrix resins are described. Monomeric reactant solutions containing the dimethyl ester of 3,3',4,4' -benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid, 4, 4' -methylenedianiline and the monomethyl ester of 5-norbornene-2, 3-dicarboxylic acid were used to impregnate Hercules HTS graphite fiber. Six different monomeric reactant stoichiometries were studied. The processing characteristics and elevated temperature mechanical properties of the PMR polyimide/HTS graphite fiber composites are described.

Development of a Fowler flap system for a high performance general aviation airfoil

A two-dimensional wind-tunnel evaluation of two Fowler flap configurations on the new GA(W)-1 airfoil was conducted. One configuration used a computer-designed 29-percent chord Fowler flap. The second configuration was modified to have increased Fowler action with a 30-percent chord flap. Force, pressure, and flow-visualization data were obtained at Reynolds numbers of 2.2 million to 2.9 million. Optimum slot geometry and performance were found to be close to computer predictions. A C sub L max of 3.8 was achieved. Optimum flap deflection, slot gap, and flap overlap are presented as functions of C sub L. Tests were made with the lower surface cusp filled in to show the performance penalties that result. Some data on the effects of adding vortex generators and hinged-plate spoilers were obtained.

High performance auxiliary-propulsion ion thruster with ion-machined accelerator grid

An improvement in thruster performance was achieved by reducing the diameter of the accelerator grid holes. The smaller accelerator grid holes resulted in a reduction in neutral mercury atoms escaping the discharge chamber, which in turn enhanced the discharge propellant utilization from approximately 68 percent to 92 percent. The accelerator grids were fabricated by ion machining with an 8-centimeter-diameter thruster, and the screen grid holes individually focused ion beamlets onto the blank accelerator grid. The resulting accelerator grid holes are less than 1.12 millimeters in diameter, while previously used accelerator grids had hole diameters of 1.69 millimeters. The thruster could be operated with the small-hole accelerator grid at neutralizer potential.

High performance N2O4/amine elements: Data dump covering. Task 1: Literature review

The phenomenon of reactive stream separation (RSS) in the N2O4/amine earth-storable propellant combinations is reviewed. Early theoretical models of RSS are presented, as are experimental combustion data under simulated rocket conditions. N2O4/amine combustion chemistry data is also provided. More recent work in the development of a comprehensive model is described.

Effectiveness of spoilers on the GA(W)-1 airfoil with a high performance Fowler flap

Two-dimensional wind-tunnel tests were conducted to determine effectiveness of spoilers applied to the GA(W)-1 airfoil. Tests of several spoiler configurations show adequate control effectiveness with flap nested. It is found that providing a vent path allowing lower surface air to escape to the upper surface as the spoiler opens alleviates control reversal and hysteresis tendencies. Spoiler cross-sectional shape variations generally have a modest influence on control characteristics. A series of comparative tests of vortex generators applied to the (GA-W)-1 airfoil show that triangular planform vortex generators are superior to square planform vortex generators of the same span.

High performance dc-dc conversion with voltage multipliers

An experimental 100W 1000V dc-dc converter using a capacitor diode voltage multipler (CDVM) with a nominal frequency of 100 kHz is studied. A component weight of about 1 kg/kW was obtained. Design equations for current, output -ripple and -power, efficiency and output voltage are derived. Agreement between experimental results and calculations is fairly good except for ripple.

A high performance line regulator

The present work describes the design of a 10-kHz, 500-W switching buck type regulator used as a line regulator in a power conditioner for an ion thruster. The frequency response of the switching regulator had to be raised beyond the resonant frequency of the output LC filter to produce a positive total network impedance and prevent negative resistance oscillation. Analysis of this stability problem is given.

Studies performed to demonstrate the feasibility of using the polymerization of monomer reactants (PMR) approach in order to 'tailor-make' processable polyimide matrix resins are described. Monomeric reactant solutions containing the dimethyl ester of 3, 3', 4, 4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid, 4, 4'-methylenedianiline and the monomethyl ester of 5-norborene-2, 3-dicarboxylic acid were used to impregnate Hercules HTS graphite fiber. Six different monomeric reactant stoichiometries were studied. The processing characteristics and elevated temperature mechanical properties of the PMR polyimide/HTS graphite fiber composites are described.
