UPC++ v1.0 Specification, Revision 2023.3.0

UPC++ is a C++ library providing classes and functions that support Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming. The key communication facilities in UPC++ are one-sided Remote Memory Access (RMA) and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). All communication operations are syntactically explicit and default to non-blocking; asynchrony is managed through the use of futures, promises and continuation callbacks, enabling the programmer to construct a graph of operations to execute asynchronously as high-latency dependencies are satisfied. A global pointer abstraction provides system-wide addressability of shared memory, including host and accelerator memories. The parallelism model is primarily process-based, but the interface is thread-safe and designed to allow efficient and expressive use in multi-threaded applications. The interface is designed for extreme scalability throughout, and deliberately avoids design features that could inhibit scalability.

Protein Motifs for Proton Transfers That Build the Transmembrane Proton Gradient

Biological membranes are barriers to polar molecules, so membrane embedded proteins control the transfers between cellular compartments. Protein controlled transport moves substrates and activates cellular signaling cascades. In addition, the electrochemical gradient across mitochondrial, bacterial and chloroplast membranes, is a key source of stored cellular energy. This is generated by electron, proton and ion transfers through proteins. The gradient is used to fuel ATP synthesis and to drive active transport. Here the mechanisms by which protons move into the buried active sites of Photosystem II (PSII), bacterial RCs (bRCs) and through the proton pumps, Bacteriorhodopsin (bR), Complex I and Cytochrome c oxidase (CcO), are reviewed. These proteins all use water filled proton transfer paths. The proton pumps, that move protons uphill from low to high concentration compartments, also utilize Proton Loading Sites (PLS), that transiently load and unload protons and gates, which block backflow of protons. PLS and gates should be synchronized so PLS proton affinity is high when the gate opens to the side with few protons and low when the path is open to the high concentration side. Proton transfer paths in the proteins we describe have different design features. Linear paths are seen with a unique entry and exit and a relatively straight path between them. Alternatively, paths can be complex with a tangle of possible routes. Likewise, PLS can be a single residue that changes protonation state or a cluster of residues with multiple charge and tautomer states.

Simultaneous Reduction of NOx and Fuel Consumption for Off-Road Powertrains

Simultaneously reducing criteria pollutants and fuel consumption is important for clean air and improving vehicle total cost of ownership. The goal of this effort was focused on a 90% NOx reduction and 10% fuel savings for an off-road 407 kW diesel engine. The baseline was a production Fiat Powertrain 13L engine and aftertreatment system meeting 0.4 g/kW-hr NOx. The baseline system was quantified over the NRTC, RMC, new low load cycle and five field cycles. A next generation engine was built incorporating several fuel-efficient design features, including a higher compression ratio, increased fuel-rail pressure, low-friction piston rings, and a high-efficiency variable-geometry turbocharger. Cylinder deactivation and EGR pump technologies were added to this engine as well. The combination was optimized prior to adding advanced aftertreatment systems, showing the trade-off of engine out NOx and exhaust temperature. Two next-generation catalyst technologies were employed into a LO-SCR plus main SCR system, both with and without an electric heater upstream of the LO-SCR. These catalysts were hydrothermally aged to simulate significant field use. Dual SCR dosing with newly developed controls played a critical role in achieving the proper split between the upstream LO-SCR and the downstream main SCR. Adding a next generation mixer for the downstream SCR proved essential in obtaining the final results. The optimal configuration required adding an electric heater to elevate the exhaust temperature at the LO-SCR for early cycle NOx reduction. The final results showed a 94.8% NOx reduction and 15.7% fuel savings on the composite NRTC.

Design of a High Flux Beam Characterization Device for Falling Particle Receivers

This paper outlines the design and error analysis for a flux characterization device (i.e. flux wand) which traverses the aperture of a falling particle receiver cavity providing the incident power measurement needed for the calculation of receiver efficiency without significantly disrupting receiver output. The design features a linear actuator, water cooled extension arm, and refractory bar. The refractory bar/flux wand is a diffusely reflective surface which reflects light as it is translated across the receiver aperture to provide a light intensity distribution that is correlated to a measured flux. The component sizing, constrained by a typical 30 frame per second camera and a 4-point average of the measured reflectance, is presented. Simulation reveals the error that results from a 5% variation in flux wand reflectance is within 4% of the true value.

Modeling Dense Particle Flow in Multistage and Obstructed Flow Receivers Using High Fidelity Simulations

Particles are a leading contender for next-generation, concentrating solar power technologies, and the design of the particle receiver is critical to minimize the levelized cost of electricity. Falling particle receivers (FPRs) are a viable receiver concept, but many new designs feature complex particle obstructions that include dense discrete phase flows. This creates additional challenges for modeling as particle-to-particle interactions (i.e., collisions) and particle drag become more complex. To improve upon existing modeling strategies, a CFD-DEM simulation capability was created by coupling two independent codes: Sierra/Fuego and LAMMPS. A suitable receiver model was then defined using a traditional continuum-based model for the air and a granular model for the particle curtain. A sensitivity study was executed using this model to determine the relevance of different granular model inputs on important quantities of interest in obstructed flow FPRs: the particle velocity and curtain opacity. The study showed that the granular model inputs had little effect on the particle velocity magnitude and curtain opacity after an obstruction.

Lunar module alightment system

The lunar module (LM) landing phase is one of the most critical phases of the entire Apollo mission. Landing impact is of critical concern because at no other time during the LM mission is there less opportunity for vehicle control. To assure a successful landing, the alightment system must not only provide required shock attenuation for protection of crew and structure, but must also assure stability against overturning after touchdown. The paper discusses important design features of the alightment system, such as geometric arrangement, energy absorber characteristics, and deployment mechanisms. Performance characteristics of the vehicle at touchdown, as found analytically, are presented. Model and full-size testing of the landing system is briefly discussed.

Miniaturization of magnetic logic circuitry

Magnetic logic circuit design features two ferrite materials, with different formulation and magnetic characteristics, which are bonded into a continuous structure by preparing the materials as a slurry and using the doctor blade method to form flexible ferrite sheets. After firing, the sintering process was continuous across the bond.
