Ion drive performance and trajectories

The use of Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) for the Solar Probe Mission is addressed. The dependence of the payload mass on the site of the SEP and the flight time are described on the basis of preliminary data. The range of hardware expected to be available in the 1980's is summarized. There are several classes of optimal low-thrust trajectories for the Solar Probe Mission. These are trajectory types A, B, C corresponding to one, two, or three orbital revolutions, respectively. Plots of transfer trajectories corresponding to type-A, type-A with a Venus Swingby, type-B, and type-C with ab Icarus Rendezvous are shown. A summary of the SEP performance is given.

Design and development of a solar array drive

The design and development of a dry lubricated direct solar array pointing mechanism is discussed from its inception in 1970 to its present development into a flight mechanism for use on the Orbital Test Satellite (OTS), MAROTS, European Communication satellite and others. Results of life testing the original prototype and the OTS mechanism are presented together with an appraisal of expected future development.

Charge-exchange plasma environment for an ion drive spacecraft

The charge exchange plasma environment around a spacecraft that uses mercury ion thrusters for propulsion is described. The interactions between the plasma environment and the spacecraft are determined and a model which describes the propagation of the mercury charge exchange plasma is discussed. The model is extended to describe the flow of the molybdenum component of the charge exchange plasma. The uncertainties in the models for various conditions are discussed and current drain to the solar array, charge exchange plasma material deposition, and the effects of space plasma on the charge exchange plasma propagation are addressed.

Navigation capability for an ion drive rendezvous with Halley's Comet

Navigation accuracies are presented for a 1985 rendezvous with Halley's Comet using an ion propulsion system. Individual error sources are examined to determine their relative contributions to final delivery errors. The sensitivity of delivery accuracy to stochastic thrust variations is demonstrated by considering a baseline thrust error model and a more benign alternative model. Also studied are the effects of increased comet ephemeris uncertainties and of operational time delays between the orbit determination process and the guidance implementation.

How tidal heating in Io drives the Galilean orbital resonance locks

The mechanisms by which orbital resonance locks are maintained among Io, Europa and Ganymede are analyzed, and the effects of the dissipative tides in Jupiter and Io on their establishment and evolution are considered. According to the proposed model, initially all three satellites are in orbits far from the 2:1 commensurabilities or the three body lock. The tide raised on Io damps down the free eccentricity; only modest tidal heating occurs. Subsequently the dissipative tide raised on Jupiter by Io causes Io's orbit to spiral outwards; Io approaches the 2:1 commensurability with Europa. Io's forced eccentricity increases rapidly to a critical value, and thereafter the resonant interaction causes Europa's orbit to expand at half that of Io's orbit. A fluid core is probably formed as the result of tidal heating. Finally Europa approaches the 2:1 commensurability, angular momentum is transferred from Europa's orbit to Ganymede's, and a steady state is attained. On the basis of the observed three-body resonance amplitude (0.066 deg), it is concluded that three-body resonance may have formed less than 500 million years ago; a measurement of the rate of tidal heating in Io may determine the Q value of both Io and Jupiter. Upper and lower limits for the Jovian Q value of 2 million and 20,000 are suggested.

Navigation system design for a Halley Flyby/Tempel 2 Rendezvous mission using ion drive

A dual comet (Hall Flyby/Tempel 2 Rendezvous) mission, making use of the solar electric propulsion system, is under consideration for a 1985 launch. This paper describes the preliminary navigation system design for this mission. Orbit determination and guidance strategies for each mission phase are discussed. Navigation accuracy analyses and parametric senstivity studies for the Tempel 2 rendezvous approach phase are presented.

Driving bubbles out of glass

Surface tension gradient in melt forces gas bubbles to surface, increasing glass strength and transparency. Conventional chemical and buoyant fining are extremely slow in viscous glasses, but tension gradient method moves 250 um bubbles as rapidly as 30 um/s. Heat required for high temperature part of melt is furnished by stationary electrical or natural-gas heater; induction and laser heating are also possible. Method has many applications in industry processes.

Drawer drive for space shuttle vacuum canister

A sliding drawer type canister was designed to contain long duration exposure facility experiments which require vacuum storage before and after space exposure. The elastomeric seals require high closing loads which are generated through camming levers and transmitted through a spring loaded pressure plate. Lubrication was provided by various dry surface coatings. Higher than expected friction required some redesign after which the assembly functioned well and provided good sealing.

Are solar spectral variations a drive for climatic change

The effects of UV variations on atmospheric ozone content and climate for time scales encompassing the 27-day solar rotation period, the sunspot period, twice the solar magnetic, and also longer time periods are examined. The studies of the relationship between solar UV variations, atmospheric ozone content and atmospheric temperatures were conducted by estimating the impact of such variations on tropospheric temperature. The total luminosity constant is then held and the dependence of the ozone variations on the forcing period is calculated. It is concluded that solar UV variations on time scales of weeks to months occasionally perturb total ozone and stratospheric temperatures by noticeable amounts but result in only minor changes in the troposphere.

74001 drive tube - Siderophile elements match II B iron meteorite pattern

Eight siderophile elements, seven volatile elements, and U were determined in three samples from 74001 by radiochemical neutron activation analysis. The siderophile pattern closely corresponds to the addition of approximately 0.1% of II B iron meteorites, and the enrichment of nonsiderophile volatile elements seems to be derived from lunar sources with variation generally following Se content. In addition, in 74001 (predominantly black glass), moderately volatile elements (Ag, Zn) are more abundant than In, Cd, and particularly Bi, while in 74220 (mainly orange glass), Ag, Zn, In, and Cd are almost equally abundant, but Bi is as low as in 74001.

Cold-air investigation of first stage of 4-1/2-stage, fan drive turbine with average stage-loading factor of 4.66

The design procedure and the development of the blading geometry for the 4 and 1/2 stage turbine are discussed. Results obtained with the first stage, operated as a single stage turbine, are presented. A free vortex design meets the design requirements without incurring problems such as excessive turning, negative reaction, or high Mach number. Cold air tests of the single stage turbine showed that the turbine developed design work (stage loading factor of 5.26) at an efficiency of 0.86, which was the efficiency predicted by a reference method. The mass flow at this condition was 0.88, which occurred at design speed and a pressure ratio of 1.407, corresponding to a stage loading factor of 4.35. The efficiency at this condition was 0.003 higher than that predicted by the reference method.

Charge-exchange plasma environment for an ion drive spacecraft

A model was reviewed which describes the propagation of the mercury charge-exchange plasma and extended to describe the flow of the molybdenum component of the charge-exchange plasma. The uncertainties in the models for various conditions are discussed. Such topics as current drain to the solar array, charge-exchange plasma material deposition, and the effects of space plasma on the charge-exchange plasma propagation are addressed.
