Wake Disturbance-Based Separation Criteria Study for Urban Air Mobility Aircraft

This study continues previous research evaluating the aircraft flight dynamics in the presence of wake disturbances. A model for fixed-wing-generated wake effects is input to the closed-loop system of a Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology (RVLT) Lift+Cruise aircraft operating in the fixed-wing Cruise configuration. The wake effects are implemented as a time-varying nonlinear aerodynamic model that affect the stability, dynamic, and control derivatives of the aircraft at every time step. The final product of this study is a reduced separation minimum based on further simulation testing with the nonlinear RVLT Lift+Cruise aircraft model, as well as additional wake inputs from rotorcraft and static urban canyons.

Recommendation for Limiting Conditions for ASME BPVC Section III Division 5 Allowable Stress Criteria

Section III, Division 5 of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) specifies rules for elevated temperature nuclear reactors. Time dependent allowable stresses are an important aspect of the high temperature design models and are related to the time to 1% strain, time to rupture, and time to onset of tertiary creep. The time to onset of tertiary creep criterion has an overly strong negative influence on the allowable stresses for some structural materials, likely due to very limited datasets and misidentification of microstructural changes rather than onset of significant creep damage, as tertiary creep is meant to represent. It is recommended that the onset of tertiary creep be determined through an alloy specific ratio between onset of tertiary creep and creep rupture time, which would give access to the significantly larger creep rupture time datasets.

A proposed criteria to identify wind turbine drivetrain bearing loads that induce roller slip based white-etching cracks

In this article, the type of roller slip behavior that may result in the formation of white-etching cracks (WECs) in wind turbine gearbox bearings is identified. A new hypothesis based on the inner raceway normal contact load magnitude at the time of roller slip is proposed as the probable cause of WECs. For this purpose, the maximum normal contact loads are identified when roller slip occurs in high-speed shaft bearings at different mean wind speeds. Subsequently, the annual probability of occurrence of the maximum normal loads are obtained. The probability of maximum load under slip exceeding a limit probability is hypothesized as a probable cause for WEC. In order to apply the proposed hypothesis, two different wind turbines high-speed shaft bearings are used: the cylindrical roller bearing of the General Electric 1.5 SLE turbine and the tapered roller bearing of Vestas V52 turbine. Both the chosen bearings are on the generator side of the high-speed shaft. For both turbines, measurement data together with analytical models are used for identifying the slip and the maximum normal contact loads. We propose forecasting the probability of exceedance of a threshold maximum normal contact load level during slip to identify the possibility for inducing WECs.

The criteria in above-bandgap photo-irradiation in molecular beam epitaxy growth of heterostructure of dissimilar growth temperature

Above-bandgap photo-irradiation is known to improve the low temperature growth of II-VI semiconductors, but the trade-offs in the substrate temperature and light source power density are not well known. We investigated these effects on the growth of ZnSe epilayers on GaAs. Here, we find that the above-bandgap photo-irradiation can improve the ZnSe epilayer without substantially negatively impacting the underlying GaAs epilayer only if the laser energy is below a threshold intensity. When the threshold is exceeded, the growth rate drops, the optical properties of ZnSe layer deteriorate and interface intermixing is enhanced. Together, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and photoluminescence results suggest that photo-irradiation at moderate to high laser energies produces a trade-off in interface intermixing and planar defect formation. Most importantly, the damage produced by high laser energies does not start at the interface but instead in the bulk. Further flexibility for selecting the temperature and photo-irradiation intensities could be realized by turning on the laser irradiation after the ZnSe growth has been initiated, limiting the potential intermixing at the interface.

Executive Summary of the American Radium Society Appropriate Use Criteria for Radiation Treatment of Node-Negative Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer

Definitive radiation therapy (RT), with or without concurrent chemotherapy, is an alternative to radical cystectomy for patients with localized, muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) who are either not surgical candidates or prefer organ preservation. We aim to synthesize an evidence-based guideline regarding the appropriate use of RT.

Primary Mediastinal B Cell Lymphoma in the Positron-Emission Tomography Era Executive Summary of the American Radium Society Appropriate Use Criteria

Primary mediastinal B cell lymphoma (PMBCL) is a highly curable subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is diagnosed predominantly in adolescents and young adults. Consequently, long-term treatment-related morbidity is critical to consider when devising treatment strategies that include different chemoimmunotherapy strategies with or without radiation therapy. Furthermore, adaptive approaches using the end-of-chemotherapy (EOC) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scanning may help to determine which patients may benefit from additional therapies. We aimed to develop evidence-based guidelines for treating these patients.

Crystallographic stability of the BCC phase during quenching of metastable beta titanium alloy Ti-5553 and comparison of structural criteria for the predictive capability of α” martensite

This work evaluates the compositional standard currently developed for Ti-5553 powder and explores the metastable β region for sensitivity to martensitic formation during rapid quenching from the melt. Ti-5553 is a beta-stabilized titanium alloy that is increasingly being used in additive manufacturing applications. A series of alloys within the Ti-5553 compositional space was processed using two-piston spat quenching to perform rapid solidification and quenching for each of these alloy compositions. Typical empirical models such as molybdenum equivalency are not able to fully separate the retained BCC and martensitic compositions. Further, the use of thermodynamic data to estimate the transformation energy needed to form martensite can differentiate the alloys and provide a metric to further develop compositional limits for metastable beta titanium alloy development.
