Continued Testing and Modeling of the AirSquared All-Metal Tritium Scroll Pump

The implementation of fusion energy requires the processing of the deuterium-tritium mixture used to fuel the reaction. Many gas processing operations require either a gas-motive force or a pressure gradient across a system; both are achieved using vacuum pumps. However, because of the material challenges of working with tritium, specialized pumps are required that use only metal on wetted surfaces. This prevents tritium retention and degradation of materials such as oils and polymers and reduces the generation of tritiated waste. Typical gas handling systems for tritium operations involve metal bellows pumps, all-metal scroll pumps, and metal turbomolecular pumps, depending on the pressure requirements. With the industry standard Normetex Type 15 m 3 /h (typically referred to as the Normetex 15) pump no longer available, the fusion market requires viable alternatives. In this study, we test an American-made pump, the AirSquared V16H034A-C01, and compare its performance to the Normetex. A performance model of the AirSquared pump is also produced, which can be applied to general process models to generate an accurate description of pressures and flows through various unit operations.

Type-I ELM mitigation by continuous lithium granule gravitational injection into the upper tungsten divertor in EAST

Large edge-localized modes (ELMs) were mitigated by gravitational injection of lithium granules into the upper X-point region of the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) device with tungsten plasma-facing components. The maximum ELM size was reduced by ~70% in high β N H-mode plasmas. Large ELM stabilization was sustained for up to about 40 energy confinement times, with constant core radiated power and no evidence of high-Z or low-Z impurity accumulation. The lithium granules injection reduced the edge plasma pedestal density and temperature and their gradients, due to increased edge radiation and reduced recycling from the plasma-facing components. Ideal stability calculations using the ELITE code indicate that the stabilization of large ELMs correlates with improved stability of intermediate-n peeling-ballooning modes, due to reduced edge current resulting from the profile changes. The pedestal pressure reduction was partially offset by a core density increase, which resulted in a modest ~7% drop in core stored energy and normalized energy confinement time. We surmise that the remnant small ELMs are triggered by the penetration of multiple Li granules just past the separatrix, similar to small ELMs triggered by deuterium pellet Futatani et al (2014 Nucl. Fusion 54 073008). This study extends previous ELM elimination with Li powder injection Maingi et al (2018 Nucl. Fusion 58 024003) in EAST because (1) use of small, dust-like powder and the related potential health hazards were eliminated, and (2) use of macroscopic granules should be more applicable to future devices, due to deeper penetration than dust particles, e.g. inside the separatrix with velocities ~10 m s -1 in EAST.

Study on the continuous phase evolution and physical properties of gas-atomized high-entropy alloy powders

In this study, AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy (HEA) powders were fabricated by gas atomization process, and the effects of annealing heat treatment on phase evolution and mechanical properties were investigated. The as-atomized powders have pure BCC phase with a spherical shape and equal composition distribution, and then the FCC and sigma phase sequentially generated after annealing. The mechanical property such as hardness was evidently enhanced, which was caused by precipitation hardening effect. After the raw powders were annealed at 600 °C, the FCC (Al–Ni) phase began to precipitate, the its phase intensity raised with the annealing temperature. Then, the sigma phase (Fe– Cr)formed as the annealing temperature reached 800 °C. Both mechanical properties and lattice constant were influenced by heating effect. According to the results, the lattice became loose with the increasing temperature. In summary, the mechanical properties and phase constitutions of gasatomized AlCoCrFeNi HEA powders can be adjusted via annealing process, resulting in precipitation hardening effect.

Continuity of Mitochondrial Budding: Insights from BS-C-1 Cells by In Situ Cryo-electron Tomography

Mitochondrial division is a fundamental biological process essensial for cellular functionality and vitality. The prevailing hypothesis that dynamin related protein 1 (Drp1) provides principal control in mitochondrial division, in which it also involves the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the cytoskeleton, does not account for all the observations. Therefore. the hypothesis may be incomplete. Our previous study in HeLa cells led to a new hypothesis of mitochondrial division by budding. To follow-up our previous study, we employed in situ cryo-electron tomography to visualize mitochondrial budding in the intact healthy monkey kidney cells (BS-C-1 cells). Our findings reaffirm single and multiple mitochondrial budding, consistent with our observations in HeLa cells. Notably, the budding regions vary significantly in diameter and length, which may represent different stages of budding. More interestingly, neither rings nor ring-like structures, nor the wrapping of ER tubes was observed in the budding regions, suggesting mitochondrial budding is independent from Drp1 and ER. Meanwhile, we uncovered direct interactions between mitochondria and large vesicles that are distinct from small mitochondrial-derived vesicles and extracellular mitovesicles. In conclusion, we propose that these interacting vesicles may have mitochondrial origins.

Continuous Family of Conformal Field Theories and Exactly Marginal Operators

Does a conformal manifold imply the existence of exactly marginal operators? We answer this question affirmatively under the assumption that there exists a conformal interface with certain properties connecting nearby conformal field theories. We show that the exactly marginal operator that connects the conformal field theories can be reconstructed from the interface displacement operator. Our construction is model independent and based on the general principles of conformal symmetry.

A continuous symmetry breaking measure for finite clusters using Jensen-Shannon divergence

A quantitative measure of symmetry breaking is introduced that allows the quantification of which symmetries are most strongly broken due to the introduction of some kind of defect in a perfect structure. The method uses a statistical approach based on the Jensen-Shannon divergence. The measure is calculated by comparing the transformed atomic density function with its original. Software code is presented that carries the calculations out numerically using Monte Carlo methods. The behavior of this symmetry breaking measure is tested for various cases including finite size crystallites (where the surfaces break the crystallographic symmetry), atomic displacements from high symmetry positions, and collective motions of atoms due to rotations of rigid octahedra. Finally, the approach provides a powerful tool for assessing local symmetry breaking and offers new insights that can help researchers understand how different structural distortions affect different symmetry operations.

Continuous phase transition between bosonic integer quantum Hall liquid and a trivial insulator: Evidence for deconfined quantum criticality

The deconfined quantum critical point, a prototype Landau-forbidden transition, could exist, in principle, in the phase transitions involving a symmetry-protected topological phase; however, examples of such kinds of transitions in physical systems are rare beyond one-dimensional systems. Here, using a density-matrix renormalization-group calculation, we unveil a bosonic integer quantum Hall phase in a two-dimensional correlated honeycomb lattice, by full identification of its internal structure from the topological K matrix. Furthermore, we demonstrate that imbalanced periodic chemical potentials can destroy the bosonic integer quantum Hall state and drive it into a featureless trivial (Mott) insulator, where all physical observables evolve smoothly across the critical point. At the critical point, the entanglement entropy reveals a characteristic scaling behavior, which is consistent with the critical field theory as an emergent QED3 with two flavors of Dirac fermions.

Single-channel and single-energy partial-wave analysis with continuity improved through minimal phase constraints

Single-energy partial-wave analysis has often been applied as a way to fit data with minimal model dependence. However, remaining unconstrained, partial waves at neighboring energies will vary discontinuously because the overall amplitude phase cannot be determined through single-channel measurements. This problem can be mitigated through the use of a constraining penalty function based on an associated energy-dependent fit. However, the weight given to this constraint results in a biased fit to the data. In this paper, for the first time, we explore a constraining function which does not influence the fit to data. The constraint comes from the overall phase found in multichannel fits which, in the present study, are the Bonn-Gatchina and Jülich-Bonn multichannel analyses. The data are well reproduced and weighting of the penalty function does not influence the result. The method is applied to K⁢Λ photoproduction data and all observables can be maximally well reproduced. While the employed multichannel analyses display very different multipole amplitudes, we show that the major difference between two sets of multipoles can be related to the different overall phases.
