Silicon nanocluster anion-argon cation recombination via hybrid continuum-molecular dynamics calculations
Prediction of the charge distribution on particles in an aerosol is critical not only in electrical mobility based characterization methods, but also in understanding the role that charging plays in particle growth in gas phase synthesis reactors. The latter is particularly important in non-thermal plasma synthesis reactors, wherein nanoclusters form and grow from vapor phase precursors in a high electron and high ion density environment. In plasmas, because free electrons are much less massive and much more mobile than positive gas ions, nanocluster charge distributions are biased negative. Furthermore, neutral or even positively charged nanoclusters may exist, depending on the rate of nanocluster-gas ion recombination, and nanocluster-nanocluster collisions may greatly contribute to nanocluster growth if not Coulombically suppressed.

Influence of cation species on thermal expansion of Y 2 Si 2 O 7 –Gd 2 Si 2 O 7 solid solutions
Mixtures of Y 2 Si 2 O 7 and Gd 2 Si 2 O 7 were synthesized by solid-state reaction at 1600°C and characterized via in situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine their coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE). All solid solutions within the system exhibited the orthorhombic δ-RE 2 Si 2 O 7 (Pna2 1 ) structure. Thermal expansion measurements of Y 2 Si 2 O 7 and Gd 2 Si 2 O 7 correlated well with reported values in literature, and all synthesized solid solutions exhibited CTEs between Y 2 Si 2 O 7 and Gd 2 Si 2 O 7 . Generally, there was a slight decrease in CTE exhibited by the materials with increasing Gd 2 Si 2 O 7 content, with Gd 2 Si 2 O 7 having the lowest CTEs and Y 2 Si 2 O 7 the highest CTEs. Here, the decrease in CTE was attributed to stronger bonds of Gd-O over Y-O, as determined by calculated crystal orbital Hamilton populations using density functional theory. However, such differences were very small and crystal structure was the dominating factor in CTE trends.

Energetic Insights into the Role of Quaternary Ammonium Cations in Zeolite Synthesis
The thermodynamics of partitioning of an organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) between water and an organic solvent such as chloroform or trichloroethane serve as a proxy for energetic interactions during zeolite synthesis. Using several newly synthesized OSDAs, we have extended our earlier calorimetric and partitioning studies of the thermodynamics of transfer to separate effects of charge (C/N + ratio) and structure in a series of structurally related OSDAs. The Gibbs free energies of transfer are close to zero, resulting from a balance of strongly exothermic and relatively similar enthalpies and strongly negative and relatively similar entropies of transfer. There is no obvious correlation between the thermodynamics of transfer and the efficacy of a given OSDA in the zeolite synthesis. Finally, one must conclude that with bulk energetics of transfer being similar in most cases studied, the critical factors in OSDA function in zeolite synthesis are kinetically rather than thermodynamically controlled and arise from differences in activation energies related to details of OSDA structure and interactions during nucleation of possible zeolite precursors.
