The effects of outgassing materials on voltage breakdown

We will start by reviewing some of the basic equations which regulate outgassing and show their dependency on temperature and thickness. Then we will draw an analogy between mass transfer or outgassing and radiant heat transfer, and show how we utilize a computer program initially written for radiant heat transfer to determine the condensation rate caused by mass transfer.

Laser-induced gas breakdown - Electron cascade.

Development of a theory of electron cascade which takes explicitly into account the electron energy distribution. For the particular case of a Boltzmann distribution, it is shown that the monoenergetic approximation is valid, except for low flux densities (less than 20 MW per sq cm) of the laser beam. It is emphasized that the equilibrium temperature can be calculated easily. When electron-ion inverse bremsstrahlung comes into play, this approximation becomes invalid; there is a pressure below which the cascade cannot develop. Numerical results are presented for model calculations of helium and argon.

Design method for minimizing RF voltage breakdown

Research study was conducted and results were published. Using principles of similarity and minimum of experimental data, a number of universal curves have been constructed covering wide range of experimental parameters. Gases other than air, such as argon and carbon dioxide, also are included in study.
