Study of navigation accuracy for the proposed QUASAT mission

A covariance analysis has been performed for the proposed QUASAT, an earth orbiting radio telescope. Conventional (Doppler and range) and advanced (diifferenced and doubly differenced one-way range) radio metric data types are used to evaluate the navigation accuracy that can be achieved. It is found that the mission requirements are met by conventional data types, while advanced data types can provide an order of magnitude improvement with less measurements, provided the three NASA DSN stations are augmented by more closely spaced stations.

On the accuracy of gravimetric geoids and the recovery of oceanographic signals from altimetry

The accuracy of measurements of gravity over the North Atlantic is assessed. The effect of errors due mainly to aliasing, of the distribution of available data, and of the unresolved geoid power on geoidal estimates is determined. A crude estimate of circulation in the North Atlantic is obtained by using the simplest of preconceptions: a reasonable rms value of zeta prime, the component of the surface expression of seawater motion corresponding to the general circulation.

Radiometric accuracy of the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE)

The Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) is a cryogenically-cooled 10-band photometer with a large field-of-view (0.886 x 0.886 sq deg) which scans by rotation of the Cosmic Background Explorer about a spin axis. In-orbit calibration requires that the DIRBE detect and measure with precision the signatures of compact sources as they transit the field-of-view. Analysis of the conceptual optical design revealed that response of the 10 bands would vary significantly as a function of source position in the field-of-view, caused by anamorphic pupil distortion and field separation. The optical design reported in this paper is the result of changes which greatly improve the response uniformity and radiometric accuracy of the DIRBE.

A new class of high accuracy TVD schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws

A new family of high accuracy Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) schemes has been developed. Members of the family include the conventional second-order TVD upwind scheme, various other second-order accurate TVD schemes with lower truncation error, and even a third-order accurate TVD approximation. All the schemes are defined with a five-point grid bandwidth. In this paper, the new algorithms are described for scalar equations, systems, and arbitrary coordinates. Selected numerical results are provided to illustrate the new algorithms and their properties.

Accuracy of earth albedo estimates from wide-angle radiation measurements

The instantaneous resolution and accuracy that can be expected from two inversion techniques to be used in the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) are examined. It is shown that measurement errors are magnified by the numerical filter and that this magnification is a function of the magnitude of the inversion factor. By using singular value decomposition, these magnitudes can be reduced to improve the estimates. A simulation of the estimation process using an albedo field derived from scanning radiometer data shows that retaining 6 of the 13 singular values gives the best results. If there are no bidirectional model errors the medium-field-of-view data give the best estimates. However, when bidirectional model errors are considered, the wide-field-of-view measurements give better estimates since they are less sensitive to these errors.

The use of Landsat-4 MSS digital data in temporal data sets and the evaluation of scene-to-scene registration accuracy

The MSS sensor on Landsat 4 is, in certain performance aspects, diferent from those of Landsats 1 through 3. These differences created some concern in the NASA research community as to whether individual data sets can be registered accurately enough to produce acceptable data sets for multitemporal data analysis. The use of Landsat 4 MSS digital data in temporal data sets is examined and a method is presented for estimating temporal registration accuracy based on the use of an X-Y digitizer and grey tone electrostatic plots. Results indicate that the RMS temporal registration errors are not significantly different from the temporal data sets generated using Landsat 4 and Landsat 2 data (33.35 meters) and the temporal data set constructed from two Landsat 2 data sets (33.61 meters). A derivation of the model used to evaluate the temporal registration is included.

Improving the Accuracy of the Boundary Integral Method Based on the Helmholtz Integral

Several recent papers in the literature have been based on various forms of the Helmholtz integral to compute the radiation fields of vibrating bodies. The surface integral form is given. The symbols of P,R micron, rho,G,R,V, and S micron are acoustic pressure, source coordinate, angular frequency, fluid density, Green function, field coordinate, surface velocity and body surface respectively. A discretized form of the surface integral is also given. Solutions to the surface integral are complicated with the singularity of the Green function at R=R micron and with the uniqueness problem at interior eigen frequencies of the enclosed space. The use of the interior integral circumvents the singularity problem since the field points are chosen in the interior space of the vibrating body where a zero pressure condition exists. The interior integral form is given. The method to improve the accuracy is detailed. Examples of the method is presented for a variety of radiators.

Accuracy of schemes for the Euler equations with non-uniform meshes

The effect of non-uniform grids on the solution of the Euler equations is analyzed. A Runge-Kutta type scheme based on a finite volume formulation is considered. It is shown that for arbitrary grids the scheme can be inconsistent even though it is second-order accurate for uniform grids. An improvement is suggested which leads to at least first-order accuracy for general grids. Test cases are presented in both two- and three-space dimensions. Applications to finite difference and implicit algorithms are also given.

Comparative accuracy of the Albedo, transmission and absorption for selected radiative transfer approximations

Illustrations of both the relative and absolute accuracy of eight different radiative transfer approximations as a function of optical thickness, solar zenith angle and single scattering albedo are given. Computational results for the plane albedo, total transmission and fractional absorption were obtained for plane-parallel atmospheres composed of cloud particles. These computations, which were obtained using the doubling method, are compared with comparable results obtained using selected radiative transfer approximations. Comparisons were made between asymptotic theory for thick layers and the following widely used two stream approximations: Coakley-Chylek's models 1 and 2, Meador-Weaver, Eddington, delta-Eddington, PIFM and delta-discrete ordinates.

High accuracy heat capacity measurements through the lambda transition of helium with very high temperature resolution

A measurement of the heat capacity singularity of helium at the lambda transition was performed with the aim of improving tests of the Renormalization Group (RG) predictions for the static thermodynamic behavior near the singularity. The goal was to approach as closely as possible to the lambda-point while making heat capacity measurements of high accuracy. To do this, a new temperature sensor capable of unprecedented resolution near the lambda-point, and two thermal control systems were used. A short description of the theoretical background and motivation is given. The initial apparatus and results are also described.

Geometric accuracy of Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper images

The geometric accuracy (GA) and errors in imagery by Landsat-4 and -5 were examined using data from regions with a minimal topography. A least-squares comparison was made between ground truth digitized photographs and TM data for prominent features displayed on a 1:24,000 map. The algorithms used for the transformation of the Landsat data to a Cartesian system are provided. Landsat-5 images had a calculated error of 11.2 m (0.4 pixel) and could not be improved with skew and affine-distortion corrections. However, the digitized images, including road tracks, were considered detailed enough for standard 1:50,000 maps. Landsat-5 imagery, when fully corrected, was consistently superior to Landsat-4 data.

Changes in classification accuracy due to varying Thematic Mapper and multispectral scanner spatial, spectral, and radiometric resolution

The present paper provides the results of a factorial experiment designed to study the classification differences resulting from varying TM and MSS sensor resolution. Eight simulated data sets of various TM and MSS spatial, spectral, and radiometric resolutions were generated on the basis of Daedalus aircraft scanner data. It is pointed out that the current study provides more precise results than previous work, because more exact methods of data simulation with regard to the three factors were emphasized. Two methods of analysis are considered in the paper. To improve on earlier studies, efforts were made to collect an extensive amount of ground reference data. The summaries of classification accuracies for the training sites in the factorial analysis are presented in a table.

Improving the absolute positioning accuracy of robot manipulators

The absolute positioning accuracy of robot manipulator can be increased substantially by updating the nominal link parameters in the control software. This paper presents a general method to estimate the link parameter errors for any serial link manipulator (i.e., n links, and any combination of revolute and prismatic joints). The parameters are estimated through a linear kinematic model which relates the link bias errors to the end-effector positioning error. Only end-effector measurements are required instead of individual link measurements to implement this method.

Speech variability effects on recognition accuracy associated with concurrent task performance by pilots

In the present study of the responses of pairs of pilots to aircraft warning classification tasks using an isolated word, speaker-dependent speech recognition system, the induced stress was manipulated by means of different scoring procedures for the classification task and by the inclusion of a competitive manual control task. Both speech patterns and recognition accuracy were analyzed, and recognition errors were recorded by type for an isolated word speaker-dependent system and by an offline technique for a connected word speaker-dependent system. While errors increased with task loading for the isolated word system, there was no such effect for task loading in the case of the connected word system.

Accuracy of wind measurements using an airborne Doppler lidar

Simulated wind fields and lidar data are used to evaluate two sources of airborne wind measurement error. The system is sensitive to ground speed and track angle errors, with accuracy required of the angle to within 0.2 degrees and of the speed to within 1 knot, if the recovered wind field is to be within five percent of the correct direction and 10 percent of the correct speed. It is found that errors in recovered wind speed and direction are dependent on wind direction relative to the flight path. Recovery of accurate wind fields from nonsimultaneous sampling errors requires that the lidar data be displaced to account for advection so that the intersections are defined by air parcels rather than fixed points in space.
