Fuel samples, 90UC - 10 ZrC, and chemically vapor deposited tungsten fuel cups were fabricated for the study of the long term dimensional stability and compatibility of the carbide-tungsten fuel-cladding systems under irradiation. These fuel samples and fuel cups were assembled into the fuel pins of two capsules, designated as V-2E and V-2F, for irradiation in NASA Plum Brook Reactor Facility at a fission power density of 172 watts/c.c. and a miximum cladding temperature of 1823 K. Fabrication methods and characteristics of the fuel samples and fuel cups prepared are described.
Uranium carbide fueled, thermionic emitter configurations were encapsulated and irradiated. One capsule contained a specimen clad with fluoride derived chemically vapor deposited (CVD) tungsten. The other capsule used a duplex clad specimen consisting of chloride derived on floride derived CVD tungsten. Both fuel pins were 16 millimeters in diameter and contained a 45.7-millimeter length of fuel.
The hydrogen embrittlement of aged T-111 and similar Ta and Cb alloys is characterized and the mechanisms believed responsible for the increased sensitivity of T-111 to low temperature hydrogen embrittlement after aging for 1000 hours or longer near 1040 C are described. A total of eight Ta base alloys and two Cb base alloys were investigated. The effects of pre-age annealing temperature, aging time, temperature and environment, and alloy composition on the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement were investigated. The primary method of determining the effects of these variables on the ductility of T-111 was by bend testing at 25 and -196 C. Fractured specimens were examined by the scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, metallography and X-ray diffration.

Creep rupture tests of electron beam welded PWC-11 sheet were conducted at 1350 K. Full penetration, single pass welds were oriented transverse to the testing direction in 1 mm thick sheet. With this orientation, stress was imposed equally on the base metal, weld metal, and heat-affected zone. Tests were conducted in both the postweld annealed and aged conditions. Unwelded specimens with similar heat treatments were tested for comparative purposes. It was found that the weld region is stronger than the base metal for both the annealed and aged conditions and that the PWC-11 material is stronger in the annealed condition than in the aged condition.

Modified-CPF and CASSCF/multireference-CI theoretical calculations are presented for the ground and low-lying states of YO and YS, ZrO and ZS, and NbO and NbS. The techniques employed are explained, and the calculated spectroscopic constants are presented in extensive tables. Good agreement is found with published experimental data on the oxides, and it is inferred that the sulfide results are accurate as well. Particular attention is given to the high-lying quartet manifold of states in YO and the (1) 3Pi-a3Delta transition of ZrS (possibly the source of the IR Keenan bands seen in S-star spectra).
