Understanding the TiH (2-x) /TiO y System at Elevated Temperature: A Literature Review

Titanium hydride of varying TiH stoichiometry is used in pyrotechnic compositions. In order to yield consistent performance, manufacturing processes must be developed to ensure precise and reproducible material properties, including composition and morphology. Legacy synthesis protocols are not comprehensive nor are the required apparatuses still available. To guide the development of novel production procedures, this report reviews literature on relevant chemical reactions and diffusion events occurring at elevated temperature in the TiH (2-x) /TiO y system. Titanium hydride exposed to air spontaneously forms a passivating oxide layer. Upon heating, significant hydrogen release, which is accompanied by changes to the surface oxide layer, is noted by 375–400°C. At higher temperatures (above about 500°C) the oxide layer is reported to be essentially nonexistent as a result of oxide-layer dissolution processes and, potentially, oxide-layer reduction due to water formation. Based on the reviewed literature, we hypothesize that, by 500°C, the surface layer consists of an oxyhydride phase, which is a solid solution of oxygen in titanium hydride. We believe that hydrogen release from titanium hydride is controlled by the kinetics of molecular hydrogen desorption on the oxyhydride surface. No literature data is available for corresponding activation energies of the dynamic desorption process, and the equilibrium phase diagram of this three-component system remains largely unexplored as well. These gaps in knowledge might be addressed through coordinated computational modeling and experimental efforts.

Identifying Controlling Variables for Mercury Vapors in Alpha-4 at Y-12: Two Year Data Collection Update

Multiple sensor packages were deployed at Alpha-4 by SRNL, in collaboration with United Cleanup Oak Ridge LLC (UCOR), to monitor mercury vapor concentrations and meteorological parameters. These sensors collected data, inside and outside of the legacy-use facility, for approximately two years. Though data gaps still exist, particularly in colder months, several controlling variables were identified that govern mercury vapor concentrations within Alpha-4. Temperature, barometric pressure gradients, humidity, and wind speed have been identified as controlling variables. A strong positive correlation was seen between mercury vapor concentrations and temperature which generally followed diurnal fluctuations. Temperatures below approximately 10 degrees Celsius did not show any spikes above the PEL, indicating more work can be performed at any time during the winter months – more data should be collected to confirm consistency in this finding. Additionally, spikes in mercury vapor concentrations above that of the permissible exposure limit (PEL; 100 µg/m 3 ) occurred primarily in late afternoon or evening/overnight hours (between 3 PM and 6 AM), which suggests D&D operations might be best scheduled during morning or daytime hours prior to the late afternoon. However, a limited number of spikes did occur outside of the identified window, although this may be attributed to disturbances in air flow and mercury vapor release from work activities performed inside of the Alpha-4 building. The analysis conducted allows for a strong predictive capability for estimating mercury vapor concentrations based upon accurate meteorological parameters. Still, additional data collection, particularly in the winter months, could help to strengthen the predictive power and validate the identified data trends. Further, increased temporal resolution could also help to better characterize the incipient stages of the increases and decreases in the mercury vapor concentration. Continued monitoring support by SRNL at Y-12 is underway at Alpha-4 to further close remaining data gaps and support deactivation and decommissioning work. Within a collaborative effort with UCOR, the SRNL team is collecting mercury vapor data to study the efficacy of a novel mercury suppressant, FerroBlack® which was recently deployed at Alpha-4. In addition, modifications to the current monitoring setup to increase measurement resolution is also being investigated.

Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) Injection Transport Beamline (Y-Line Ext.) Lattice Design and Magnet Parameters

The preliminary design of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) Normal Conducting Injection Beamline ( Y-Line Ext. ) lattice is discussed. The preliminary design includes the periodic cells, matching sections, state of the art Twiss parameters at the HSR injection, the magnet parameters and first order instrumentation placement. Furthermore, the beamline parameters, element coordinates, and other information are discussed. The names of the HSR Injection Beamline elements used in this technical report ( i.e. HD1, HQ1 ) are preliminary and not the official site wide names.

Evaluations for neutron-induced activation cross sections for Y and Zr isotopes

Activation cross sections are an important input for evaluating results of radiochemical analyses, both for basic science and programmatic applications. We present an update on cross sections for a select set of Y and Zr target isotopes, including several isomers. This effort will focus on a methodology to obtain uncertainty quantified systematic trends for reaction model parameters and propagate them to cross sections. We discuss our results in the context of previous calculations.

Oscilloscope used as X-Y plotter or two-dimensional analyzer

Oscilloscope used as an X-Y plotter or two-dimensional analyzer tags each point with a yes or no, depending on a third parameter. The usual square-wave pulse is replaced on the scope by a single information-bearing dot which lengthens to a dash in response to a simultaneous event.

X-Y plotter adapter developed for SDS-930 computer

Graphical Display Adapter provides a real time display for digital computerized experiments. This display uses a memory oscilloscope which records a single trace until erased. It is a small hardware unit which interfaces with the J-box feature of the SDS-930 computer to either an X-Y plotter or a memory oscilloscope.
