Diagnosis of PV Cell Passivation Degradation Resulting from Hot-Humid, High Voltage Potential Aging

Corrosion of the antireflective coating on the cell ("AR c corrosion") was previously observed in studies using hot-humid test conditions with external high voltage (HV) bias. Because AR c corrosion is not well understood, mini-modules (MiMos) were examined in a comparative experiment using PERC and PERT as well as legacy Al-BSF cells. For separate MiMos with the cell circuit electrical at +1500 V, -1500 V, or unbiased "V oc", test conditions in the comparative study included 60degrees C/60% RH for 96 h, as in IEC TS 62804-1; 70degrees C/70%RH for 200 h; and 85degrees C/85% RH for 200 h. Characterizations at each read point included: camera and electroluminescence (EL) imaging, colorimetry, and I-V curve tracing. Characterizations at the final read point included: SunsVoc; spatially mapping external quantum efficiency (EQE); high resolution: photoluminescence (PL), EL, and dark lock-in thermographic (DLIT) imaging. Forensics were performed on extracted cores, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning Auger microscopy (SAM). Forensics were also conducted on MiMos (stepped HV aging) and full-sized modules (outdoor aging) from previous studies. AR c corrosion was specifically observed for the glass/encapsulant/cell side of +1500 V (HV+) stressed MiMos, where appearance, color, and reflectance were the characteristics most distinguished relative to simultaneously occurring degradation modes. SEM/EDS and SAM identified conversion of silicon nitride to silicon oxide or hydrous silica, preferentially occurring at the edges and tips of the pyramidal textured cell surface.

The Effects of Threshold Voltage and Number of Fins per Transistor on the TID Response of GF 12LP Technology

This abstract presents a comprehensive analysis of total ionizing dose (TID) response in GlobalFoundries’ 12LP 12nm bulk FinFET technology using 10keV X-rays. Devices with higher threshold voltages (VTs) demonstrated lower increases in off-state leakage current (IDS,OFF) post-irradiation, highlighting the mitigating role of high VT in TID response. Our data shows that transistors with fewer fins exhibit superior TID resistance, implying lower susceptibility to radiation effects. Our study also probed two bias conditions, "Gate-On" and "Pass-Gate," with the former displaying more severe TID degradation. Interestingly, p-type devices displayed negligible degradation, underscoring their inherent resilience to TID effects. Additionally, medium thick n-type devices echoed the fin-count-dependent TID response observed in other transistor types, further strengthening our findings. These results underscore the importance of strategic transistor selection and design for enhancing the TID resilience of future CMOS FinFET architectures, particularly critical in radiation-intense environments.

Grid Value Analysis of Medium-Voltage Back-to-Back Converter on DER Hosting Enhancement

This paper presents an analysis of the value that can be realized by medium-voltage back-to-back (MVB2B) converters in terms of the increased utilization rate of distributed energy resources (DERs) and the improvement in operational conditions. A systematic, transferrable, and scalable methodology has been designed to analyze and quantify the increased DER value from three perspectives: 1) curtailment reduction of the DER generation, 2) size reduction of the energy storage needed to otherwise realize DER hosting levels, and 3) hosting capacity improvement of the DERs compared to the base distribution circuit capability. In the case study, the proposed methodology is applied to two utility distribution systems for analysis and quantification of the grid value of the MVB2B converter, installed in the distribution circuit, and provided to the solar photovoltaic (PV) DERs. Here, the analysis results demonstrate that the MVB2B converter can deliver significant value to the PV hosting enhancement of two adjacent distribution systems when they are connected by the MVB2B converter. Based on this case study, this paper analyzes and summarizes the approximate realized grid value of the MVB2B converter for distribution systems dominated by different shares of customer classes.

Cybersecurity Enhancement for Multi-Infeed High-Voltage DC Systems

Composed of multiple two-terminal high-voltage DC (HVDC) transmission systems, a multi-infeed HVDC (MIDC) system exchanges massive power among multiple asynchronous AC systems. However, as an intrinsically cyber-physical system, an MIDC system could suffer from cyber-attacks, leading to massive power mismatches in multiple AC systems, and resulting in catastrophic consequences. Since the sequential responses of an MIDC system and interconnected AC systems are in different timescales, this paper first establishes a two-timescale model to evaluate the sequential impacts caused by cyber-attacks. Then, an event-triggered cyber-defense strategy is proposed to enhance the cybersecurity of an MIDC system by mitigating multiple non-simultaneous cyber-attacks. Whenever new cyber-attack events occur, the proposed cyber-defense strategy, which is mathematically modeled as a mixed-integer quadratic programming problem, is executed on-line and updated in an event-triggered manner. Here, simulation results on an MIDC system demonstrate that the low-cost and almost blind cyber-attacks can cause severe frequency deviations, and the proposed strategy can mitigate multi-cyber-attacks effectively.

Multi-Task Reinforcement Learning for Distribution System Voltage Control With Topology Changes

This letter proposes a multi-task deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach for distribution system voltage regulation considering topology changes via PV smart inverter control. The key idea is to encode the topology as an additional state for the DRL and leverage the multi-task learning scheme for joint learning of all task control policies. Unlike other DRL-based methods, our approach is robust to different topologies. Comparison results on the modified IEEE 123-node system demonstrate the enhanced robustness of the proposed method.

Reports from the Frontier: Understanding Voltage Losses in Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers

With the growth of renewable energy sources, hydrogen is attracting significant attention worldwide as an effective medium for energy storage. “Green hydrogen” is currently produced primarily by water electrolysis in which water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using power from low-carbon energy sources such as wind, solar, and nuclear. Among the low temperature water electrolysis technologies, anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) have recently emerged as a promising competitor to traditional alkaline water electrolyzers (AWEs) and proton exchange membrane electrolyzers (PEMELs) due to their potential stack cost reduction in various cell components. In conclusion, favorable aspects of AEMWEs include the use of PGM-free electrocatalysts as well as low-cost membranes, bipolar plates (BPs), and porous transport layers while offering high voltage efficiency and durability.

Analysis of Conservation Voltage Reduction under Inverter-Based VAR-Support [Slides]

Conservation voltage reduction (CVR) is a common technique used by utilities to strategically reduce demand during peak periods. As penetration levels of distributed generation (DG) continue to rise and advanced inverter capabilities become more common, it is unclear how the effectiveness of CVR will be impacted and how CVR interacts with advanced inverter functions. In this work, we investigated the mutual impacts of CVR and DG from photovoltaic (PV) systems (with and without autonomous Volt-VAR enabled). The analysis was conducted on an actual utility dataset, including a feeder model, measurement data from smart meters and intelligent reclosers, and metadata for more than 30 CVR events triggered by the utility over the year. The installed capacity of the modeled PV systems represented 66% of peak load, but reached instantaneous penetrations reached up to 2.5x the load consumption over the year. While the objectives of CVR and autonomous Volt-VAR are opposed to one another, this study found that their interactions were mostly inconsequential since the CVR events occurred when total PV output was low.

Auto Recycler Report: Results from a Questionnaire about Processing Electric Vehicles and Handling High-Voltage Batteries

With the transition to clean energy the demand for electric vehicles in the United States is rapidly growing. As demand continues to rise in the next couple of decades, sourcing materials (e.g., lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, etc.) to put into new batteries for electric vehicles will be critical. The U.S. does not have significant reserves of most of these materials and relies heavily on foreign countries. The lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles are large and contain substantial amounts of critical materials, therefore, they are a promising source of materials for new batteries. Recycling electric vehicle batteries when they reach their end-of-life will enable the United States to generate a domestic supply of materials needed for future batteries. [1-3] The auto recycling industry is the largest collective owner of end-of-life vehicles in the U.S. and will be the primary handlers of battery-powered vehicles (i.e., hybrid or electric) when they reach the end of their useful life. In an effort to better understand how the auto recycling industry currently handles battery-powered vehicles and their high-voltage batteries, DOE’s ReCell Center for Advanced Battery Recycling (ReCell) developed a questionnaire and distributed it to various trade organizations in the automotive recycling industry.

Feasibility of Passive MOSFET Paralleling for Photovoltaic Current-Voltage Curves

Current-voltage curves are an important method of characterizing Photovoltaic (PV) Modules. NREL has developed several low-cost MOSFET-based devices that can characterize PV cells and modules. The size of PV modules that can be measured is limited by the power limitations of a single MOSFET. By using multiple MOSFET devices, each can operate at a lower current, paralleled on resistance is also decreased allowing for higher power loads. Operating multiple devices in parallel can cause an imbalance in current, thus causing some devices to conduct more, pushing them into a thermal runaway condition. To investigate this, an active feedback circuit was tested with paralleled devices using a PV module load. The efficacy, limitations, and design considerations of using parallel MOSFET loads for PV characterization are explored. This work is not new, but the implementation of a paralleled architecture in a low cost characterization tool is novel.

Control of a Three-Phase Grid-Connected Voltage-Sourced Converter Using Long Short-Term Memory Networks

With the rise of inverter-based resources (IBRs) within the power system, the control of grid-connected converters (GCCs) has become pertinent due to the fact they interface IBRs to the grid. The conventional method of control for a GCC such as the voltage-sourced converter (VSC) is through a decoupled control loop in the synchronous reference frame. However, this model-based control method is sensitive to parameter changes causing deterioration in controller performance. Data-driven approaches such as machine learning can be utilized to design controllers that are capable of operating GCCs in various system conditions. This work explores a deep learning-based control method for a three-phase grid-connected VSC, specifically utilizing a long short-term memory (LSTM) network for robust control. Simulations of a conventional controlled VSC are conducted using Simulink to collect data for training the LSTM-based controller. The LSTM model is built and trained using the Keras and TensorFlow libraries in Python and tested in Simulink. The performance of the LSTM-based controller is evaluated under different case studies and compared to the conventional method of control. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach by outperforming the conventional controller and maintaining stability under different system parameter changes.

Charge Transport Characteristics of Molecular Electronic Junctions Studied by Transition Voltage Spectroscopy

The field of molecular electronics is prompted by tremendous opportunities for using a single-molecule and molecular monolayers as active components in integrated circuits. Until now, a wide range of molecular devices exhibiting characteristic functions, such as diodes, transistors, switches, and memory, have been demonstrated. However, a full understanding of the crucial factors that affect charge transport through molecular electronic junctions should yet be accomplished. Remarkably, recent advances in transition voltage spectroscopy (TVS) elucidate that it can provide key quantities for probing the transport characteristics of the junctions, including, for example, the position of the frontier molecular orbital energy relative to the electrode Fermi level and the strength of the molecule–electrode interactions. These parameters are known to be highly associated with charge transport behaviors in molecular systems and can then be used in the design of molecule-based devices with rationally tuned electronic properties. This article highlights the fundamental principle of TVS and then demonstrates its major applications to study the charge transport properties of molecular electronic junctions.

Nonvolatile Voltage Controlled Molecular Spin-State Switching for Memory Applications

Nonvolatile, molecular multiferroic devices have now been demonstrated, but it is worth giving some consideration to the issue of whether such devices could be a competitive alternative for solid-state nonvolatile memory. For the Fe (II) spin crossover complex [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)], where pz = tris(pyrazol-1-yl)-borohydride and bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine, voltage-controlled isothermal changes in the electronic structure and spin state have been demonstrated and are accompanied by changes in conductance. Higher conductance is seen with [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] in the high spin state, while lower conductance occurs for the low spin state. Plausibly, there is the potential here for low-cost molecular solid-state memory because the essential molecular thin films are easily fabricated. However, successful device fabrication does not mean a device that has a practical value. Here, we discuss the progress and challenges yet facing the fabrication of molecular multiferroic devices, which could be considered competitive to silicon.

1.2 kV, 10 A, 4H-SiC Bi-Directional Field Effect Transistor (BiDFET) with Low On-State Voltage Drop

Bidirectional power switches are used in matrix-or cyclo-converters and in multistage inverter circuits to facilitate high-frequency AC-to-AC conversion. A new 1.2 kV bidirectional MOSFET (BiDFET) with low on-resistance is achieved and demonstrated using two discrete SiC power MOSFET bare die chips, packaged within a four-terminal custom-designed module. Static and dynamic characterization has been carried out to inspect the on-state and switching behaviour of the BiDFET. Here, the BiDFET is shown to have a low forward voltage drop of 0.6 V at a current of 10 A, which is more than 2.5x smaller than previous Si IGBT and SiC MOSFET based bidirectional switch implementations.

Emergency Voltage Regulation in Power Systems via Ripple-Type Control: Preprint

With increasing penetration of volatile renewable generation and cyber-physical disruptions, ensuring safe operation of bulk power systems has become unprecedentedly challenging. Since communication and computational costs restrict centralized system dispatch to be called upon every few minutes; and purely local schemes are shown to be insufficient, distributed controls have been advocated for handling unanticipated system conditions in real time. However, the applicability of distributed control schemes is fundamentally limited by their need for widespread communication and model cognizance. In this con-text, we put forth a hybrid low-communication saturation-driven protocol for the coordination of control agents that are distributed over a physical system and are allowed to communicate with peers over a ‘hotline’ communication network. Under this protocol, when agents observe a constraint violation based on local measurements, they respond locally until their control resources saturate, in which case they send a beacon for assistance to peer agents. The scheme ensures that minor violations are efficiently mitigated via fast local controls, while severe violations may be handled by a collaboration of a relatively small set of agents. We evaluate the performance of this scheme via extensive numerical tests on the IEEE 14-bus test feeder, where agents act upon noisy measurements under diverse scenarios of random load variations and severe low/high voltage events.

Performance Evaluation of Peer-to-Peer Distributed Microgrids Coordination for Voltage Regulation: Preprint

This paper presents the performance evaluation of a peer-to-peer microgrids coordination algorithm for sub-transmission systems. As distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution system start to show negative impact to the bulk power system, a paradigm shift is needed for transmission planning and operation. Because distribution substations are located far from the sub-transmission system, and it is hard to use traditional centralized control for real-time control and coordination. Thus, distributed control is a natural choice because it requires less communication and central computation. In this paper, each distribution substation is treated as a microgrid, and the peer-to-peer distributed microgrids control is formulated as a real-time optimal power flow problem to reduce the negative impact in sub-transmission systems. A distributed primal-dual optimization algorithm is adopted to solve the problem. Validation of the peer-to-peer algorithm is performed through the simulation of a real-world sub-transmission system composing of many distribution systems with high renewable penetration. Simulation results show that the peer-to-peer algorithm can achieve satisfactory performance (e.g., voltage regulation) in sub-transmission system by coordinating and controlling DERs in distribution systems.

Use of Grid-Forming Medium-Voltage Power Electronics Hub in a Microgrid Setting: Preprint

This paper presents the application of a new design of a multiport, modular, medium-voltage power electronics hub (M3PE-HUB) in a microgrid setting. The M3PE-HUB system was modeled in a digital real-time simulator (DRTS) and integrated into the Banshee microgrid test system. This paper presents the preliminary DRTS simulation-based results of the M3PE- HUB system connected in a test microgrid system. Verification and validation of the M3PE-HUB architecture and controls in the test microgrid setting are the primary contributions of this work. The results of the operation during the islanding and resynchronization process indicate the feasibility of the proposed architecture in a microgrid setting. This paper also presents results for a system reconfiguration use case where the M3PE- HUB was used to reconfigure the system under a fault condition.
