Definition of Modeling vs. Programming Languages
Modeling languages (like UML and SysML) are those used in modelbased specification of software-intensive systems. Like programming languages, they are defined using their syntax and semantics. However, both kinds of languages are defined by different communities, and in response to different requirements, which makes their methodologies and tools different. In this paper, we highlight the main differences between the definition methodologies of modeling and programming languages. We also discuss the impact of these differences on language tool support. We illustrate our ideas using examples from known programming and modeling languages. We also present a case study, where we analyze the definition of a new modeling language called the Ontology Modeling Language (OML). We highlight the requirements that have driven OML definition and explain how they are different from those driving typical programming languages. Finally, we discuss how these differences are being abstracted away using new language definition tools.
Flying Cassini Through the Grand Finale Orbits: Prediction vs. Reality
After twenty years of successful mission operations and invaluable scientific discoveries, the Cassini orbiter completed its tour around the Saturnian system on the most complex gravity-assist trajectory ever flown. The end-of-mission target of September 15, 2017 was achieved by preserving propellant at the expense of minimizing maneuver cycles. A navigation a strategy that incorporated orbit trim maneuvers was developed years in advance to maintain position dispersions below 250 km (1σ) at three specific periapses. This paper reports on the actual maneuver performance and overall trajectory control to maintain the Grand Finale orbits, highlighting the differences between predicted and implemented values.

Poisson vs. Gaussian statistics for sparse X-ray data: Application to the soft X-ray spectrometer
Reliable results when fitting X-ray data require proper consideration of the statistics involved. We probe the impact of Gaussian versus Poisson statistics at low count levels using both the standard χ^(2) method and maximum likelihood based on Poisson (C) statistics. The difference is studied and quantified through simulated spectra with known properties. We then test the results through analysis of Mn Kα calibration data taken with the flight spare microcalorimeter for the Hitomi soft X-ray spectrometer. Through comparison with simulations, our results show that the χ^(2) method tends to give overly optimistic estimates of the detector energy resolution, in particular when there are few counts. Given an energy resolution of ∼5 eV and a line with about 100 photons, the line width becomes ∼10% lower in the χ^(2) method than in Poisson statistics. This is a consequence of the uncertainties being dominated by counting statistics, and therefore highlights the need to choose the appropriate fit statistic.
Mesosiderite Silicates vs. HED Polymict Breccias
The silicate portions of mesosiderites are broadly like howardites [1], and this has led to persistent interpretations that mesosiderites and howardites are derived from the same parent asteroid [2]. Yet, when examined carefully, one finds that there are substantial petrological and compositional differences between these polymict breccias. These differences indicate that separate parent asteroids are more probable [3, 4]. I will document the distinctions between these groups based on my data and literature information [5] and discuss their origins.
