Estimates of the moon's geometry using lunar orbiter imagery and Apollo laser altimeter data

Selenographic coordinates for about 6000 lunar points identified on the Lunar Orbiter photographs are tabulated and have been combined with those lunar radii derived from the Apollo 15 laser altimeter data. These coordinates were used to derive that triaxial ellipsoid which best fits the moon's irregular surface. Fits were obtaind for different constraints on both the axial orientations and the displacement of the center of the ellipsoid. The semiaxes for the unconstrained ellipsoid were a = 1737.6 km, b = 1735.6 km, and c = 1735.0 km which correspond to a mean radius of about 1736.1 km. These axes were found to be nearly parallel to the moon's principal axes of inertia, and the origin was displaced about 2.0 km from the moon's center of gravity in a direction away from the earth and to the south of the lunar equator.

Hydrogen atom in intense magnetic field.

The structure of a hydrogen atom situated in an intense magnetic field is investigaged. Three approaches are employed. An elementary Bohr picture establishes a crucial magnetic field strength, H sub a approximately equal to 5 x 10 to the 9th G. Fields in excess of H sub a are intense in that they are able to modify the characteristic atomic scales of length and binding energy. A second approach solves the Schrodinger equation by a combination of variational methods and perturbation theory. It yields analytic expressions for the wave functions and energy eigenvalues. A third approach determines the energy eigenvalues by reducing the Schrodinger equation to a one-dimensional wave equation, which is then solved numerically. Energy eigenvalues are tabulated for field strengths of 2 x 10 to the 10th G and 2 x 10 to the 12th G. It is found that at 2 x 10 to the 12th G the lowest energy eigenvalue is changed from -13.6 to about -180 eV in agreement with previous variational computations.

K-shell photoionization cross-sections.

Approximate values for the threshold energies, threshold cross sections, and energy dependence of the cross sections for K-shell photoionization are tabulated for H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and S in all stages of ionization. The approximation of these data is based on the assumptions that the threshold energy is a simple function of the nuclear charge and the number of electrons present in the atom, and that the threshold values and energy dependence of the cross sections are determined only by the threshold energy.

An automated procedure for computing flutter eigenvalues.

A new, fast and economical automated procedure for implementing the traditional V-g method of flutter solution is described. The procedure requires as input the generalized aerodynamic forces for a range of reduced frequencies obtained from an aerodynamic program. These aerodynamic forces are interpolated with respect to reduced frequency using a newly developed, partially tabulated cubic spline that is both fast in execution and economical in storage. The flutter solution is then obtained using an eigenvalue routine that has been developed to take advantage of the parametric nature of the V-g type of solution. Furthermore, the routine takes care of the fundamental and troublesome problem of properly sorting the output eigenvalues. By solving the root-sorting problem, the interpolation for flutter crossings and automatic plotting are accomplished efficiently. The computational techniques used in this new program are described and some sample results are given.

Matrix operator theory of radiative transfer. II - Scattering from maritime haze.

Matrix operator theory is used to calculate the reflected and transmitted radiance of photons that have interacted with plane-parallel maritime haze layers. The results are presented for three solar zenith angles, three values of the surface albedo, and a range of optical thicknesses from very thin to very thick. The diffuse flux at the lower boundary and the cloud albedo are tabulated. The forward peak and other features in the single-scattered phase function cause the radiance in many cases to be very different from that for Rayleigh scattering. In particular, the variation of the radiance with both the zenith or nadir angle and the azimuthal angle is more marked and the relative limb darkening under very thick layers is greater for haze M than for Rayleigh scattering. The downward diffuse flux at the lower boundary for A = 0 is always greater and the cloud albedo is always less for haze M than for Rayleigh layers.

Energy partitioning of gaseous ions in an electric field.

The partitioning of ion energy among thermal energy, drift energy, and random-field energy is studied by solution of the Boltzmann equation. An expansion in powers of the square of the electric field strength is obtained by Kihara's method. Numerical calculations for several ion-neutral force laws show that Wannier's constant mean-free-time model gives a reasonable first approximation. The formal extension to multicomponent mixtures is also given. The matrix elements obtained are tabulated, and can be used to study the field dependence of other moments of the ion-distribution function.

Hierarchical hybrid control of manipulators - Artificial intelligence in LSI.

The need for remotely controlled manipulators and explorers, coupled with emerging large-scale integrated (LSI) circuit technology, foreshadow the dominant role of a style of hybrid control. Systems having many degrees of freedom should be guided and regulated by controllers to which commands are given in purpose-oriented form, to be converted into appropriate machine-oriented signals to effectors for achieving the purpose. In particular, numerical tabulations of functions should be replaced by low-level analog microcircuit realizations of the functions, particularly when feedback can keep errors from piling up. The study is concerned with new problems and organizations that arise in attempting to exploit obvious principles to the fullest degree.

Remote sensing in the detection of regional change.

Investigation of the impact of the California State Water Project on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, using aerial photo mosaics and high-altitude photography for 1957 and 1971. Particular attention is paid to a determination of gross land use change and to the detection of specific patterns of development emerging from this change. Information derived from the mapping and tabulating of data acquired in this study indicates a definite trend toward the development of an agricultural landscape and increasing intensification of land use on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. The introduction of water into this arid region is resulting in large acreages of land being brought under cultivation. Consequently, cropland is assuming a more dominant position with respect to areal extent.

An ERTS multispectral scanner experiment for mapping iron compounds.

An experiment is described which is designed to produce visible-reflective infrared ratio images from ERTS satellite data. The ERTS-A multispectral scanner has two channels in the visible-reflective infrared wavelength region which should be capable of duplicating aircraft scanner results. The average reflectances in the four ERTS-A MSS spectral bands for a few minerals and some vegetation are tabulated. The mineral laboratory samples were granular, with a particle diameter range of 250 to 1200 micrometer. If there were no spectral atmospheric or illumination variation effects, the ratio of energies in band 1 to band 4 would permit discrimination of pyroxenes (found in basic and ultrabasic rocks), quartz (found in acidic rocks), limonite and hematite (iron oxides), and green vegetation, on the basis of their respective ratio magnitudes.

Computer checking of rotational line intensity factors for diatomic transitions.

Previously published analytical formulae for the rotational line intensity factors of diatomic molecules have been compared with results from a comprehensive computer program, which determines numerical intensity factors for both spin-allowed and spin-forbidden electric and magnetic dipole transitions in diatomic molecules. The comparison uncovered several typographical errors and a few algebraic errors in the published formulae. The changes required in the formulae to give agreement with the results from the computer program are tabulated.

Revision of the standard reference data for thermocouples.

Revision of the International Practical Temperature Scale requires that there be changes for all accurately tabulated thermophysical values. Revised reference data for thermocouples have been generated in a program carried out by the National Bureau of Standards. The new reference data reflect not only revisions in the temperature scale, but also slight changes in the materials themselves and improvements in data fitting methods. A new NBS monograph that contains tables, analytic expressions, various approximations, and explanatory text has been prepared. A general discussion of the project and some specific examples are given.

Assuring reliability program effectiveness.

An attempt is made to provide simple identification and description of techniques that have proved to be most useful either in developing a new product or in improving reliability of an established product. The first reliability task is obtaining and organizing parts failure rate data. Other tasks are parts screening, tabulation of general failure rates, preventive maintenance, prediction of new product reliability, and statistical demonstration of achieved reliability. Five principal tasks for improving reliability involve the physics of failure research, derating of internal stresses, control of external stresses, functional redundancy, and failure effects control. A final task is the training and motivation of reliability specialist engineers.
