Status of the Measurement of Proton Scattering on Carbon Nuclei in EMPHATIC for Neutrino Flux Uncertainty Reduction

In long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, Monte Carlo (MC) simulations based on hadron interactions and decays are used to predict the neutrino flux. The 10%-level systematic uncertainty of the predicted neutrino fluxes from these simulations is dominated by uncertainties in hadron interaction cross sections due to limited hadron scattering data. EMPHATIC aims to reduce the neutrino flux uncertainty by providing additional data. Using a table-top-sized spectrometer located at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility (FTBF), its physics program includes precise measurements of hadron scattering and production cross sections at various beam momenta and target species that are relevant for GeV-scale neutrino production. Using simulation, we have developed a simple single-track reconstruction algorithm that has a momentum resolution of 3-4\%. We will demonstrate the progress in developing one of EMPHATIC’s first track reconstruction algorithms – an important step in making a new single-track forward scattering measurement (p + C $\rightarrow$ p + C at several beam momenta) using Phase 1 data collected between 2022 and 2023.

Status of the MicroBooNE Inclusive Single Photon Selection Using Wire-Cell Reconstruction

MicroBooNE is a Liquid Argon Time Project Chamber (LArTPC) detector whose primary design goal is to understand the “low-energy-excess” anomaly seen by MiniBooNE. MicroBooNE’s currently published results see no excess consistent with the MiniBooNE observation, therefore creating a need for searches in more channels. This note summarizes MicroBooNE’s inclusive single photon selection using Wire-Cell reconstruction and pattern recognition, which will be used to search for a low-energy-excess (LEE) anomaly in the inclusive single photon channel. The selection is similar to the Wire-Cell inclusive electron neutrino selection, but with a different signal definition and some modifications and additions to the pattern recognition tools. A selection with 15.2% efficiency and 18.5% purity is achieved for simulated Standard Model single photon events.

Z Facility Sustainment Status (November FY 2024) [Slides]

FY24 sustainment project list has been revised resulting in sixteen projects. Total budget for the finalized project list is $9,570,968 (includes FY23 Carryover and FY24). Key factors for project selection included: risk mitigation to address operations highest failure risk subsystems, purchase of long lead parts to address life limited parts, and completion of multi phase sustainment projects initiated in prior year. Given the backlog of projects and limited FY24 funding, there are identified projects that are not included in the final project list that could reduce future Z facility failure risk. Should additional budget become available, these identified projects can be kicked off.

Z Facility Sustainment Status (September FY2023) [Slides]

FY23 Sustainment, performed from 1 March through 30 September, completed with Cumulative Costs at 69% and combined Costs plus Commitments at 87%. Nineteen projects were completed in FY23. Eleven projects continue to close out purchasing activities or will roll over into FY24 projects. Two projects have been placed on hold and will be reevaluated for potential future consideration. Diagnostics projects issued all planned FY23 purchases and finished FY23 with 78% cumulative costs and combined costs and commitments at 102%. FY24 Sustainment Project identification, definition and prioritization was completed. Once the budget is finalized, project selection will quickly be set and projects kicked off.

Z Facility Sustainment Status (April FY 2023) [Slides]

98% of the budget is deployed, remaining $325,000 to be assigned by the end of May. Costs plus Commitments total 58% of the deployed budget. 29 projects have been kicked off and are in progress. Five project plans are being finalized and will be kicked off early summer. The February start has contributed to the risk of not costing all of the FY23 budget.

North Slope Alaska and Tethered Balloon Systems: ARM Facilities Monthly Status Update

In support of the DOE Office of Science, Sandia National Labs is one of nine national laboratories which oversees the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program. The Sandia ARM team has an obligation to fulfill its mission to provide the nation with data to improve the understanding of climate processes and the representation of those processes in climate models. Sandia’s ARM team’s ability to provide detailed and accurate descriptions of the Earth’s atmosphere in diverse climate regimes assists the DOE in development of sustainable solutions to the nation’s energy and environmental challenges. Sandia Labs manages ARM atmospheric facilities along the North Slope of Alaska (NSA) at Utqiagvik as well as the Tethered Balloon System (TBS). Activities conducted at NSA and with the TBS aide in data collection for the ARM data archive. An overview of these activities for the month of December follows.

SNF Interim Storage Canister Corrosion and Surface Environment Investigations (FY22 Status Update)

High-level purpose of this work: This report summarizes work carried out by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) in the fiscal year 2022 (FY22) to evaluate the potential occurrence of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) on spent nuclear fuel (SNF) dry storage canisters. The U.S. currently lacks a repository for permanent disposal of SNF; thus, dry storage systems will be in use for much longer time periods than originally intended. Gap analyses by the US Department of Energy (DOE), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board (NWTRB), and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) have all determined that an improved understanding of the occurrence and risk of canister SCC is critical to demonstrating the safety of long-term dry storage. Should canister penetration by SCC occur, the containment boundary represented by the canister would be breached. A loss of the inert environment (helium) within the canister could occur and intrusion of air and moisture could react with and damage the fuel within the canister. For this reason, the DOE is funding an effort to evaluate the potential occurrence and consequences of dry storage canister SCC and to develop prevention, mitigation, and repair technologies for this degradation mechanism.

Status of the Ce+BAF project

Jefferson Lab is proposing to add positron beams to the 12 GeV Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF). A team of accelerator and nuclear scientists was formed in 2018 to develop the physics case as well as a concept for the generation, production and delivery of Continuous (CW) polarized positron beams to the experimental halls, up to the full 12 GeV. A layout of the proposed concept will be shown. We will report on the ongoing efforts in the positron generation and capture, target design, beam transport and expected properties of the e+ beam on the experimental targets at 12GeV. This project is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of Nuclear Physics under contract DE-AC05-06OR23177
