Recent Research on Flames of Gaseous Fuel Aboard the International Space Station

Research for a set of six independent experiments with flames of gaseous fuels has been carried out on the International Space Station (ISS) since 2017 using the Combustion Integrated Rack (CIR) and a set of modular hardware. While ISS testing has been completed for most of the studies in the Advanced Combustion via Microgravity Experiments (ACME) project, it is expected to continue into 2022. The objectives and selected findings for each investigation are briefly discussed after a short review of the advantages of studying combustion in microgravity, previous research conducted in space, and the experimental hardware and its operation.

Comparison of High-Speed Images of Lean Blowout for Four National Jet Fuel Combustion Program Fuels

Using the NASA 7-point lean direct injection (LDI) aero gas turbine combustor concept, the effect of fuel composition on lean blowout (LBO) was compared for three National Jet Fuel Combustion Program (NJFCP) fuels and one single-component fuel. The fuels were A-2, an "average" Jet-A with a derived cetane number (DCN) of 49; C-1, which consists primarily of C12 and C16 isoparaffins (Gevo ATJ), with a DCN of 16; C-4, which consists primarily of C9-C16 and C13 isoparaffins (Sasol IPK blended with Gevo), with a DCN of 28; and n-dodecane, with a DCN of 73.5;. Lean blowout was reached by increasing the air flow. Previously-reported results showed the air flow rate at LBO increased with increasing DCN. This presentation examines high speed flame images taken as the flame blew out.
