A Highly Digital Front End For GPS Receivers

In digital front end of GPS receiver, half-subharmonic sampling of incoming radio-frequency signal followed by summing operation produces desired baseband output in filtered and sampled form. Design generates baseband samples in guadrature with exactness in quadrature separation surpassing analog implementations. Advantages include compactness, lower cost, greater accuracy, and greater reliability.

Studies in planetary rings

Progress made in research devoted to examining Voyager imaging data for the purpose of understanding the kinematics and dynamics of the Neptune ring arcs is reported. It was found that a radial distortion of amplitude 30 km is traveling through the arcs with a perturbation by the nearby satellite 1989N4. Two new and smaller arcs within the outer Neptunian ring were also discovered. The longitudinal spacing of all arcs is roughly that expected for corotational arc shepherding by 1989N4 provided that not all corotation sites in the arc region are filled. The semimajor axis of the arcs' orbit inferred from their observed mean motion and the latest Neptune gravitational parameters is, within uncertainties, identical to the location of the 42:43 corotation-inclination resonance of 1989N4: an observation which supports the notion of corotational arc-shepherding. This hypothesis also explains that the 15 km radial width of the arcs are due to a spread in forced orbital eccentricities. Clumps within the arcs were observed at a greater frequency than previously reported. These features may be the manifestation of big bodies within the arcs providing a source of ring dust, or they may be a kinematical effect associated with the crossing of eccentric orbits at quadrature. The inclusion of ground based observations of the arcs taken up to five years ago will lengthen the baseline over which arc dynamics may be studied and should lead to a refinement in the position of the Neptune spin and invariable plane poles.

Programmable digital modem

The design of the Programmable Digital Modem (PDM) is outlined. The PDM will be capable of operating with numerous modulation techniques including: 2-, 4-, 8- and 16-ary phase shift keying (PSK), minimum shift keying (MSK), and 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), with spectral occupancy from 1.2x to 2x the data symbol rate. It will also be programmable for transmission rates ranging from 2.34 to 300 Mbit/s, where the maximum symbol rate is 75 Msymbol/s. Furthermore, these parameters will be executable in independent burst, dependent burst, or continuous mode. In dependent burst mode the carrier and clock oscillator sources are common from burst to burst. To achieve as broad a set of requirements as these, it is clear that the essential signal processing must be digital. In addition, to avoid hardware changes when the operational parameters are changed, a fixed interface to an analog intermediate frequency (IF) is necessary for transmission; and, common system level architectures are necessary for the modulator and demodulator. Lastly, to minimize size and power, as much of the design as possible will be implemented with application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips.

High temperature electronic excitation and ionization rates in gases

The relaxation times for electronic excitation due to electron bombardment of atoms was found to be quite short, so that electron kinetic temperature (T sub e) and the electron excitation temperature (T asterisk) should equilibrate quickly whenever electrons are present. However, once equilibrium has been achieved, further energy to the excited electronic states and to the kinetic energy of free electrons must be fed in by collisions with heavy particles that cause vibrational and electronic state transitions. The rate coefficients for excitation of electronic states produced by heavy particle collision have not been well known. However, a relatively simple semi-classical theory has been developed here which is analytic up to the final integration over a Boltzmann distribution of collision energies; this integral can then be evaluated numerically by quadrature. Once the rate coefficients have been determined, the relaxation of electronic excitation energy can be evaluated and compared with the relaxation rates of vibrational excitation. Then the relative importance of these two factors, electronic excitation and vibrational excitation by heavy particle collision, on the transfer of energy to free electron motion, can be assessed.

Design of an essentially non-oscillatory reconstruction procedure on finite-element type meshes

An essentially non-oscillatory reconstruction for functions defined on finite-element type meshes was designed. Two related problems are studied: the interpolation of possibly unsmooth multivariate functions on arbitrary meshes and the reconstruction of a function from its average in the control volumes surrounding the nodes of the mesh. Concerning the first problem, we have studied the behavior of the highest coefficients of the Lagrange interpolation function which may admit discontinuities of locally regular curves. This enables us to choose the best stencil for the interpolation. The choice of the smallest possible number of stencils is addressed. Concerning the reconstruction problem, because of the very nature of the mesh, the only method that may work is the so called reconstruction via deconvolution method. Unfortunately, it is well suited only for regular meshes as we show, but we also show how to overcome this difficulty. The global method has the expected order of accuracy but is conservative up to a high order quadrature formula only. Some numerical examples are given which demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

Rate 3/4 coded 16-QAM for uplink applications

First phase development of an advanced modulation technology which synergistically combines coding and modulation to achieve 2 bits per second per Hertz bandwidth efficiency in satellite demodulators is nearing completion. A proof-of-concept model is being developed to demonstrate technology feasibility, establish practical bandwidth efficiency limitations, and provide a data base for the design and development of engineering model satellite demodulators. The basic considerations leading to the choice of 4 x 4 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) and its associated coding format are discussed, along with the basic implementation of the carrier and clock recovery, automatic gain control, and decoding process. Preliminary performance results are presented. Spectra for the modulated signal shows the effects of the square root Nyquist filters in the modulation. Bit error rate (BER) results for the encoder/decoder subsystem show near ideal results, although power consumption is high and baseband BER performance of the Nyquist filter set is poor. Recommendations regarding the present system to improve BER performance and acquisition speed are given.

An 8-PSK TDMA uplink modulation and coding system

The combination of 8-phase shift keying (8PSK) modulation and greater than 2 bits/sec/Hz drove the design of the Nyquist filter to one specified to have a rolloff factor of 0.2. This filter when built and tested was found to produce too much intersymbol interference and was abandoned for a design with a rolloff factor of 0.4. The preamble is limited to 100 bit periods of the uncoded bit period of 5 ns for a maximum preamble length of 500 ns or 40 8PSK symbol times at 12.5 ns per symbol. For 8PSK modulation, the required maximum degradation of 1 dB in -20 dB cochannel interference (CCI) drove the requirement for forward error correction coding. In this contract, the funding was not sufficient to develop the proposed codec so the codec was limited to a paper design during the preliminary design phase. The mechanization of the demodulator is digital, starting from the output of the analog to digital converters which quantize the outputs of the quadrature phase detectors. This approach is amenable to an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) replacement in the next phase of development.

High speed hardware development for FDMA/TDM system

The development of a transmultiplexor and a quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) demodulator is discussed. The system is designed to meet real time signal processing requirements of future satellite systems and should consume very little power. The architectures of the transmultiplexor and the demodulator are designed for the pipelining of all the modules, namely the commutator, the filter bank fast fourier transform (FFT), and the internal modules of the QPSK. The architecture is designed for the case of 800 channels. Each channel is to have a bandwidth of 45 KHz and a bit rate of 64 Kb/s. In this case each module will have 22.22 micro seconds to complete a computation.

Programmable rate modem utilizing digital signal processing techniques

The need for a Programmable Rate Digital Satellite Modem capable of supporting both burst and continuous transmission modes with either Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) or Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulation is discussed. The preferred implementation technique is an all digital one which utilizes as much digital signal processing (DSP) as possible. The design trade-offs in each portion of the modulator and demodulator subsystem are outlined.

Multi-user satellite communications system using an innovative compressive receiver

There is a need for an onboard simultaneous multi-channel demodulation system for a satellite communications system. Studies indicate that Convolve Multiply Convolve (CMC) filtering with surface acoustic wave (SAW) dispersive delay lines will eliminate the necessity of onboard satellite channelized filters of complex fourier transform processors. The reason for choosing the CMC technique is its ability to perform Fourier transformations in a shorter time with less space and power consumption than digital Fourier transform processors. Each ground terminal in this multi-users communications system is remotely located and operates independently; hence, a method of synchronizing the transmission of these users is presented which utilizes the existing Global Positioning System (GPS) system. Each ground user is equipped with a low cost ground terminal that has a synchronization subsystem attached to it. The system design of an onboard Multi-channel Receiver and Demodulator utilizes Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) as the modulation technique. This technique provides the best figure of merit, i.e., the lowest transmitter power requirement per communication channel.

The origin of non-classical effects in a one-dimensional superposition of coherent states

We investigate the nature of the quantum fluctuations in a light field created by the superposition of coherent fields. We give a physical explanation (in terms of Wigner functions and phase-space interference) why the 1-D superposition of coherent states in the direction of the x-quadrature leads to the squeezing of fluctuations in the y-direction, and show that such a superposition can generate the squeezed vacuum and squeezed coherent states.

MMIC linear-phase and digital modulators for deep space spacecraft X-band transponder applications

The design concepts, analyses, and development of GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) linear-phase and digital modulators for the next generation of space-borne communications systems are summarized. The design approach uses a compact lumped element quadrature hybrid and Metal Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MESFET)-varactors to provide low loss and well-controlled phase performance for deep space transponder (DST) applications. The measured results of the MESFET-diode show a capacitance range of 2:1 under reverse bias, and a Q of 38 at 10 GHz. Three cascaded sections of hybrid-coupled reflection phase shifters were modeled and simulations performed to provide an X-band (8415 +/- 50 MHz) DST phase modulator with +/- 2.5 radians of peak phase deviation. The modulator will accommodate downlink signal modulation with composite telemetry and ranging data, with a deviation linearity tolerance of +/- 8 percent and insertion loss of less than 8 +/- 0.5 dB. The MMIC digital modulator is designed to provide greater than 10 Mb/s of bi-phase modulation at X-band.

A spread-spectrum modem using constant envelope BPSK for a mobile satellite communications terminal

This paper describes a 5-kilobit/s spread spectrum modem with a 1.275 mega-Hz chip rate for mobile satellite communications. We used a Viterbi decoder with a coding gain of 7.8 dB at a BER of 10(exp -5) to decrease the required receiver power. This reduces the cost of communication services. The spread spectrum technique makes the modem immune to terrestrial radio signals and keeps it from causing interference in terrestrial radio systems. A class C power amplifier reduces the modem's power consumption. To avoid nonlinear distortion caused by the amplifier, the envelope of the input signal is kept constant by adding quadrature channel signal to the BPSK signal. To simulate the worst case, we measured the modem's output spectrum using a limiting amplifier instead of the class C amplifier, and found that 99 percent of the spectral power was confined to the specified 2.55 mega-Hz bandwidth.

Synchronization techniques for all digital 16-ary QAM receivers operating over land mobile satellite links

The performance of a low bit rate (64 Kb/s) all digital 16-ary Differentially Encoded Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-DEQAM) demodulator operating over a mobile satellite channel, is considered. The synchronization and detection techniques employed to overcome the Rician channel impairments, are described. The acquisition and steady state performance of this modem, are evaluated by computer simulation over AWGN and RICIAN channels. The results verify the suitability of the 16-DEQAM transmission over slowly faded and/or mildly faded channels.

Considerations of digital phase modulation for narrowband satellite mobile communication

The Inmarsat-M system for mobile satellite communication is specified as a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) system, applying Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) for transmitting 8 kbit/sec in 10 kHz user channel bandwidth. We consider Digital Phase Modulation (DPM) as an alternative modulation format for INMARSAT-M. DPM is similar to Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) except that DPM has a finite memory in the premodular filter with a continuous varying modulation index. It is shown that DPM with 64 states in the VA obtains a lower bit error rate (BER). Results for a 5 kHz system, with the same 8 kbit/sec transmitted bitstream, is also presented.

Performance of concatenated Reed-Solomon trellis-coded modulation over Rician fading channels

A concatenated coding scheme for providing very reliable data over mobile-satellite channels at power levels similar to those used for vocoded speech is described. The outer code is a shorter Reed-Solomon code which provides error detection as well as error correction capabilities. The inner code is a 1-D 8-state trellis code applied independently to both the inphase and quadrature channels. To achieve the full error correction potential of this inner code, the code symbols are multiplexed with a pilot sequence which is used to provide dynamic channel estimation and coherent detection. The implementation structure of this scheme is discussed and its performance is estimated.
