Analysis of squaring circuit mechanizations in Costas and squaring loops

The paper discusses implementations of the carrier recovery loop for suppressed carrier binary phase shift keyed signals. The tracking performance of a practical squaring loop where the times-two multiplier is mechanized as a limiter/multiplier combination is developed. This produces the absolute value of the arriving signal which is practical in terms of low signal-to-noise ratios, a wide dynamic range of signal level, and temperature variations. The approach is compared to the usual squaring loop whose squaring circuit is the times-two multiplier exhibiting a square law characteristic.

An integrated optical preprocessor for multichannel analog data

As a precursor to the construction of a 16-channel device, a 3-channel integrated optical data preprocessor has been fabricated and tested. The device, which is fabricated in an outdiffused LiNbO3 waveguide, provides a signal related to the channel-by-channel difference between a prerecorded reference set and an incoming data set which is presented in the form of parallel analog voltages. The data are impressed upon the guided wave as a set of electrooptically induced phase shifts, and the comparison to the reference set is performed by holographic subtraction. The reference set can either be introduced as a separate operation or it can be 'learned' by the preprocessor during operation.

Optical constants of alcohols in the infrared

The spectral reflectances at near-normal incidence for methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, and 1-pentanol are reported for the spectral range 6700-350 kaysers. The real and imaginary parts of the complex index of refraction of these liquids are obtained in the range 4000-400 kaysers by use of Kramers-Kronig phase-shift analysis. For all of the alcohols studied, the strength for the OH-stretch bands is directly proportional to the number of OH groups per unit volume; similar relations are established for CH- and CO-stretch bands. Absorption cross sections for stretch vibrations of the three groups are considered, and the role of characteristic group intensities in intensity spectroscopy is discussed.

A linear scanning balloon-borne telescope for far-infrared astronomy

A low-background balloon-borne far-infrared (30-300 microns) telescope, utilizing a linear scan mode has dramatically increased the efficiency of mapping large extended areas over more conventional systems. The system consists of a 20 cm linear scanned mirror mounted as an off-axis (Herchelian) telescope designed to achieve an emissivity of 1% or less, a ten position cooled aperture-filter wheel, a cooled Pfund optical system with a composite diamond-germanium bolometer mounted in a spherical cavity, a minimum phase shift ultra-low frequency amplifier, and a 4 micron thick mylar dewar window. This system was used to produce detailed far-infrared maps of the galactic plane. The system specifications and operating parameters will be discussed and preliminary data shown.

The adiabatic semiclassical perturbation theory for vibrationally inelastic scattering. I - Collinear calculations. II - Three-dimensional treatment

A semiclassical approximation to treat vibrationally inelastic scattering is developed. The vibrational basis set used is adiabatic with respect to a reference potential which is chosen to be as close as possible to the true potential and also gives easily obtainable solutions to the vibrational wave equation. The radial wave functions are obtained using the WKB approximation, and the coupled Schroedinger equations are solved by a first-order perturbation method to yield a phase shift matrix which is exponentiated to give the full scattering matrix. Results were obtained for all the cases computed by Secrest and Johnson and by Clark and Dickinson, and the agreement is better than 10% for half of the cross-sections and rarely off by more than a factor of 2.

Acoustic-gravity waves in the thermosphere of Venus

The paper studies the properties of acoustic-gravity waves in the upper atmosphere of Venus by means of a two fluid model which includes the effects of wave-induced diffusion in a diffusively separated atmosphere. It is maintained that in conjunction with neutral mass spectrometer data from the Pioneer Venus orbiter, the theory should provide information on the distribution of wave sources in the Venus upper atmosphere. In addition observed wave structure in species density measurements should generally have periods less than or equal to 30-35 min, small N2, CO, and O amplitudes, and highly variable phase shifts relative to CO2. Finally, it is noted that large-density oscillations in stratospheric cloud layer constituents are also possible and may be detectable by the Pioneer Venus large probe neutral mass spectrometer.

Digital PSK to BiO-L demodulator for 2 sup nx(bit rate) carrier

A phase shift key (PSK) to BiO-L demodulator which uses standard digital integrated circuits is discussed. The demodulator produces NRZ-L, bit clock, and BiO-L outputs from digital PSK input signals for which the carrier is a 2 to the Nth multiple of the bit rate. Various bit and carrier rates which are accommodated by changing various component values within the demodulator are described. The use of the unit for sinusoidal inputs as well as digital inputs is discussed.

On the Performance of the Martin Digital Filter for High- and Low-pass Applications

A nonrecursive numerical filter is described in which the weighting sequence is optimized by minimizing the excursion from the ideal rectangular filter in a least squares sense over the entire domain of normalized frequency. Additional corrections to the weights in order to reduce overshoot oscillations (Gibbs phenomenon) and to insure unity gain at zero frequency for the low pass filter are incorporated. The filter is characterized by a zero phase shift for all frequencies (due to a symmetric weighting sequence), a finite memory and stability, and it may readily be transformed to a high pass filter. Equations for the filter weights and the frequency response function are presented, and applications to high and low pass filtering are examined. A discussion of optimization of high pass filter parameters for a rather stringent response requirement is given in an application to the removal of aircraft low frequency oscillations superimposed on remotely sensed ocean surface profiles. Several frequency response functions are displayed, both in normalized frequency space and in period space. A comparison of the performance of the Martin filter with some other commonly used low pass digital filters is provided in an application to oceanographic data.

First results of a study on turbulent boundary layers in oscillating flow with a mean adverse pressure gradient

The development of a turbulent unsteady boundary layer with a mean pressure gradient strong enough to induce separation, in order to complete the extend results obtained for the flat plate configuration is presented. The longitudinal component of the velocity is measured using constant temperature hot wire anemometer. The region where negative velocities exist is investigated with a laser Doppler velocimeter system with BRAGG cells. The boundary layer responds by forced pulsation to the perturbation of potential flow. The unsteady effects observed are very important. The average location of the zero skin friction point moves periodically at the perturbation frequency. Average velocity profiles from different instants in the cycle are compared. The existence of a logarithmic region enables a simple calculation of the maximum phase shift of the velocity in the boundary layer. An attempt of calculation by an integral method of boundary layer development is presented, up to the point where reverse flow starts appearing.

An alternate algorithm for correction of the scanning multichannel microwave radiometer polarization radiances using Nimbus-7 observed data

The manner in which Nimbus-7 scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (SMMR) scan radiance data was used to determine its operational characteristics is described. The predicted SMMR scan radiance was found to be in disagreement at all wavelengths with a large area of average measured ocean radiances. A modified model incorporating a different phase shift for each of the SMMR horizontal and vertical polarization channels was developed and found to provide good data correlation. Additional study is required to determine the validity and accuracy of this model.

Microwave beamed power technology improvement

The magnetron directional amplifier was tested for (1) phase shift and power output as a function of gain, anode current, and anode voltage, (2) background noise and harmonics in the output, (3) long life potential of the magnetron cathode, and (4) high operational efficiency. Examples of results were an adequate range of current and voltage over which 20 dB of amplification could be obtained, spectral noise density 155 dB below the carrier, 81.7% overall efficiency, and potential cathode life of 50 years in a design for solar power satellite use. A fabrication method was used to fabricate a 64 slot, 30 in square slotted waveguide array module from 0.020 in thick aluminum sheet. The test results on the array are discussed.

Non-Synchronous Whirling Due to Fluid-Dynamic Forces in Axial Turbo-Machinery Rotors

The role of fluid forces acting on the blades of an axial turborotor with regards to whirling was analyzed. The dynamic equations were formulated for the coning mode of an overhung rotor. The exciting forces due to the motion were defined through a set of rotor stability derivatives, and analytical expressions of the aerodynamic contributions were found for the case of small mean stream deflection, high solidity and equivalent flat plate cascade. For a typical case, only backward whirl was indicated when the phase shifting of the rotor wake effect was ignored. A parametric study of the dynamic stability boundary reveals that a reduction in blade stagger angle, mass flow rate, fluid density and an increase in stiffness and external damping are all inductive for improved stability.

False lock performance of quadriphase receivers

Quadriphase receivers, like biphase receivers, have the ability to false lock on a sideband on the data modulation. The theory associated with this phenomenon for receivers of binary phase-shift-keying (BPSK), using Costas loop demodulation, has recently been documented in the literature. This paper considers the corresponding theory for receivers of balanced quadriphase-shift-keying (QPSK) employing a quadriphase Costas loop (or equivalent fourth-power loop) for demodulation. Specific closed form expressions for false lock performance are developed and numerically evaluated for the particular case of single pole arm filters and an NRZ data format for each of the two statistically independent quadrature modulations.

The effect of magnetic fields on solar luminosity

The paper presents an investigation into the influence of magnetic fields in sunspots and faculae on solar luminosity, using measurements of the solar constant from ground level and from space. Attention is given to an analysis that shows that it is difficult to devise an atmospheric mechanism that would rapidly lower visible and infrared transmission in response to sunspots, increase it in response to faculae, and anticipate the magnetic development of these features by about one day. It is shown that the phase shift of the luminosity variation provides a promising new technique to determine the depth at which the magnetic fields of sunspots and faculae redistribute the flow of convective energy.
