Automatic Generation of Algorithms for High-Speed Reliable Lossy Data Compression (Final Report)

Fast reliable data compression is urgently needed for many leading-edge scientific instruments and for exascale high-performance computing applications because they produce vast amounts of data at extremely high rates. The goal of this project has been to develop a framework named LC that is able to automatically generate high-speed lossless and reliable lossy compression and decompression algorithms that can be customized for different kinds of data. The resulting LC framework is freely available on GitHub. To achieve high-speed operation, LC outputs optimized and parallelized CPU and GPU implementations of the generated algorithms. To ensure the quality of lossily compressed data, LC guarantees the user-provided error bound. To be able to customize the compression algorithm to various use cases, LC can synthesize millions of different algorithms and automatically search for the one that works best for the given data. We have already employed LC to create state-of-the-art lossless and lossy compressors for scientific data as well as leading lossless compressors for images. We hope that LC and the customized, fast, reliable, and CPU/GPU-compatible compression algorithms that it can generate will greatly benefit the many scientific applications that need not only high trustworthiness but also high performance.

Program Verification for Extreme-Scale Applications (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

The project seeks to develop tools and techniques to help software developers verify the correctness and accuracy of their code. The target domain is scientific software of the kind widely used and developed in the Department of Energy research community, with a particular focus on "extreme scale" programs - those that are expected to involve possibly millions of parallel threads of execution. The report covers the University of Delaware contribution to the collaborative project. The project had a number of successful outcomes, especially regarding the development and extension of the CIVL software verification framework. CIVL is a verification tool for C or Fortran programs that use MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, and/or Pthreads for parallelization. CIVL went through vast improvements and extensions, and was successfully applied to a number of challenging codes. It found a subtle bug in the Devito PDE framework. It was able to verify the functional correctness of a conjugate gradient solver using a novel probabilistic technique with vanishingly small chance of error. CIVL was used very successfully in verification competitions, and the CIVL solutions to the competition challenges were presented and published. CIVL was also used successfully by other researchers on a computational chemistry kernel.

Interfacial thermal conductance between multi-layer graphene sheets and solid/liquid octadecane: A molecular dynamics study

Mixtures of paraffin and carbon nanofillers have promising potential for thermal storage, as paraffin (the matrix) possesses high latent heat and the nanofillers compensate for the low thermal conductivity (TC) of paraffin. Understanding thermal transport in these materials is essential for practical applications, as weak thermal transport hinders fast charge/discharge of thermal energy. Here, we use non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations to study the interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) between graphene sheets and octadecane (C18H38) matrix under the limiting conditions of the sheets being parallel or perpendicular to the direction of the imposed heat flux. The findings show that the systems containing thin graphene layers exhibit higher values of ITC. This study captures the asymptotic saturation of thermal conductance for the liquid phase of the perpendicular structure. Besides, given the greater number of structured layers of paraffin upon phase change, the ITC for the solid paraffin-graphene system is higher than the conductance of the liquid paraffin-graphene interface. We use the Pearson correlation coefficients of the vibrational power spectrum (VPS) of interfacing materials to explain the orders of magnitude variations of the observed ITC.

Hyperspectral and Nanosecond Temporal Resolution Widefield Infrared Photothermal Heterodyne Imaging

Label-free, bond-selective imaging offers new opportunities for fundamental and applied studies in chemistry, biology, and materials science. Preventing its broader application to investigating spectrally congested specimens are issues related to low sensitivity as well as low spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we demonstrate a widefield, mid-infrared (MIR) photothermal imaging technique, called widefield Infrared Photothermal Heterodyne imaging (wIR-PHI), that massively parallelizes acquisition of MIR absorption data through use of a high-speed complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor camera. wIR-PHI possesses notable features that include: spatial resolution significantly below the MIR diffraction limit, hyperspectral imaging capabilities, high sensitivity, and ~100 ns temporal resolution. Here, the first two features are highlighted by hyperspectral imaging of proximally close poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles where clear, bond-specific imaging of nanoparticles, separated by less than the MIR diffraction limit, is demonstrated. Sensitivity is highlighted by imaging individual PMMA and PS nanoparticles with radii between r = 97-556 nm. This leads to a current, peak absorption cross-section limit-of-detection of σ abs = 1.9× 10 –16 cm 2 . wIR-PHI's 100 ns temporal resolution is simultaneously demonstrated by observing the decay of photothermal contrast on individual nanoparticles on a ~200-6000 ns timescale. In whole, wIR-PHI’s dramatic increase in acquisition speed opens opportunities for future MIR kinetic imaging and spectroscopic studies of important chemical, biological, and material processes.

Scaling theory of three-dimensional magnetic reconnection spreading

We develop a first-principles scaling theory of the spreading of three-dimensional (3D) magnetic reconnection of finite extent in the out of plane direction. This theory addresses systems with or without an out of plane (guide) magnetic field, and with or without Hall physics. The theory reproduces known spreading speeds and directions with and without guide fields, unifying previous knowledge in a single theory. New results include: (1) Reconnection spreads in a particular direction if an x-line is induced at the interface between reconnecting and non-reconnecting regions, which is controlled by the out of plane gradient of the electric field in the outflow direction. (2) The spreading mechanism for anti-parallel collisionless reconnection is convection, as is known, but for guide field reconnection it is magnetic field bending. We confirm the theory using 3D two-fluid and resistive-magnetohydrodynamics simulations. (3) The theory explains why anti-parallel reconnection in resistive-magnetohydrodynamics does not spread. (4) The simulation domain aspect ratio, associated with the free magnetic energy, influences whether reconnection spreads or convects with a fixed x-line length. (5) We perform a simulation initiating anti-parallel collisionless reconnection with a pressure pulse instead of a magnetic perturbation, finding spreading is unchanged rather than spreading at the magnetosonic speed as previously suggested. The results provide a theoretical framework for understanding spreading beyond systems studied here, and are important for applications including two-ribbon solar flares and reconnection in Earth’s magnetosphere.

SIERRA/Aero User Manual - Version 4.56

SIERRA/Aero is a compressible fluid dynamics program intended to solve a wide variety compressible fluid flows including transonic and hypersonic problems. This document describes the commands for assembling a fluid model for analysis with this module, henceforth referred to simply as Aero for brevity. Aero is an application developed using the SIERRA Toolkit (STK). The intent of STK is to provide a set of tools for handling common tasks that programmers encounter when developing a code for numerical simulation. For example, components of STK provide field allocation and management, and parallel input/output of field and mesh data. These services also allow the development of coupled mechanics analysis software for a massively parallel computing environment.
