Multiport Control with Partial Power Processing in Solid-State Transformer for PV, Storage, and Fast-Charging Electric Vehicle Integration

This article proposes a multiport control method to enable partial power processing (PPP) in a medium-voltage (MV) multiport solid-state transformer (SST). MV multiport SSTs are promising in integrating low-voltage DC sources or loads such as solar photovoltaic, energy storage, and electric vehicles into smart grids without bulky line-frequency transformers. Compared to voltage-source SST, current-source (CS) SST features single-stage isolated bidirectional AC/AC, AC/DC, or DC/DC conversion using an inductive DC link. For a multiport CS SST, it is revealed in this article that the PPP capability can be enabled through the proposed control without extra hardware, different from the case of voltage-source converters where special hardware architecture is required for the PPP. With the PPP, most power exchange between LV ports is processed by only a fraction of the entire conversion stage, leading to reduced DC-link current, volume, loss, and improved efficiency. The proposed multiport PPP control scheme is analyzed to verify the advantages across a wide voltage and power range against conventional full power processing (FPP) multiport control, using the soft-switching solid-state transformer (S4T) with reduced conduction loss as an example. Comparative experimental results based on a SiC three-port S4T prototype verify the effectiveness of the proposed PPP scheme against the FPP scheme under both steady state and dynamic conditions. Here, the DC-link current reduction is measured to be more than 36%. Significantly, the proposed multiport PPP control scheme is generic and applicable to any hard-switching or soft-switching CS SSTs without extra hardware.

Attention Enabled Multi-Agent DRL for Decentralized Volt-VAR Control of Active Distribution System Using PV Inverters and SVCs

This paper proposes attention enabled multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) framework for active distribution network decentralized Volt-VAR control. Using the unsupervised clustering, the whole distribution system can be decomposed into several sub-networks according to the voltage and reactive power sensitivity relationships. Then, the distributed control problem of each sub-network is modeled as Markov games and solved by the improved MADRL algorithm, where each sub-network is modeled as an adaptive agent. An attention mechanism is developed to help each agent focus on specific information that is mostly related to the reward. All agents are centrally trained offline to learn the optimal coordinated Volt-VAR control strategy and executed in a decentralized manner to make online decisions with only local information. Compared with other distributed control approaches, the proposed method can effectively deal with uncertainties, achieve fast decision makings, and significantly reduce the communication requirements. Comparison results with model-based and other data-driven methods on IEEE 33-bus and 123-bus systems demonstrate the benefits of the proposed approach.

PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative (March 2020 Methodology Report)

Data for thousands of systems by multiple sources were transmitted to NREL for evaluation. Initial automated data quality assurance (QA) checks identified hundreds of systems (QA Tier 1) with high-quality meteorological and AC production data and hundreds of QA Tier 2 systems with adequate data quality. A standard RdTools analysis was conducted for these systems, evaluating performance loss on an annualized basis. To date with the systems evaluated so far, we find a median performance loss rate (aka Rd or degradation rates) for the entire fleet of -0.72%/year based on individual inverter data, which is in line with historical degradation rates previously published for modules and systems (-0.5% to -0.9% / yr, Jordan et al. 2016). A fleet-scale distribution based on revenue-grade meter data rather than inverter AC (alternating current) data yields a slightly different result. We are working to understand the difference between this result and the inverter-based result of -0.72%/year.

A CHIL Validation of Machine Learning-Assisted Methods for Real-Time Controls of Solar PV for Grid Services

Recent research has highlighted the potential for solar to act as a zero-marginal-cost and zero-emission flexibility resource on the bulk power system when operated with advanced control systems. To increase the performance of these systems, leading technologies, including machine learning (ML) and hierarchical inverter set point allocation, have been proposed; however, these technologies lack comprehensive validation under real-world application scenarios. This paper addresses this gap by designing and developing a controller-hardware-in-the-loop framework to evaluate the performance of different flexible solar technologies in responding to automatic generation control signals in a closed-loop fashion. Simulation results indicate the superior performance of an ML-based approach compared to the conventional reference-control grouping-based approach, showcasing its potential to support grid stability and operational efficiency.

Automating Detection and Diagnosis of Faults, Failures, and Underperformance in PV Plants

The project developed hybrid physics-based and machine-learning methods for near-real-time detection of balance-of-system faults (e.g., string, combiner, and tracker outages) in utility-scale Photovoltaic plants, achieving over 50% true positive rates with under 10% false positives and significantly reducing engineering setup time. In the extended phase, the scope expanded to plant-level underperformance analysis and industry benchmarking through the SUPER.epri.com platform. SUPER standardizes data processing and performance metrics across more than 9 GWac and 120+ plants, enabling robust comparisons and insights into loss rates, inverter downtime, and capacity degradation.

Financial Impacts of Net-Metered Distributed PV on a Prototypical Western Utility’s Shareholders and Ratepayers

Distributed solar photovoltaic (DPV) under net-energy metering with volumetric retail electricity pricing has raised concerns among utilities and regulators about adverse financial impacts for shareholders and ratepayers. Using a pro forma financial model, we estimate the financial impacts of different DPV deployment levels on a prototypical Western U.S. investor-owned utility under a varied set of operating conditions that would be expected to affect the value of DPV. Our results show that the financial impacts on shareholders and ratepayers increase as the level of DPV deployment increases, though the magnitude is small even at high DPV penetration levels. Even rather dramatic changes in DPV value result in modest changes to shareholder and ratepayer impacts, but the impacts on the former are greater than the latter (in percentage terms). The range of financial impacts are driven by differences in the amount of incremental capital investment that is deferred, as well as the amount of incremental distribution operating expenses that are incurred. While many of the impacts appear relatively small (on a percentage basis), they demonstrate how the magnitude of impacts depend critically on utility physical, financial, and operating characteristics.

Commercial PV Inverter IEEE 1547.1 Ride-Through Assessments Using an Automated PHIL Test Platform

As more countries seek solutions to their de-carbonization targets using renewable energy (RE) technologies, interconnection standards and national grid codes for distributed energy resources (DER) are being updated to support higher penetrations of RE and improve grid stability. Common grid-code revisions mandate DER devices, such as solar inverters and energy storage systems, ride-through (RT) voltage and frequency disturbances. This is necessary because as the percentage of generation from DER increases, there is a greater risk power system faults will cause many or all DER to trip, triggering a substantial load-generation imbalance and possible cascading blackout. This paper demonstrates for the first time a methodology to verify commercial DER devices are compliant to new voltage, frequency, and rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) RT requirements established in IEEE Std. 1547-2018. The methodology incorporates a software automation tool, called the SunSpec System Validation Platform (SVP), in combination with a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) system to execute the IEEE Std. 1547.1-2020 RT test protocols. In this paper, the approach is validated with two commercial photovoltaic inverters, the test results are analyzed for compliance, and improvements to the test procedure are suggested.

PV Durability at Scale: Assessing Bifacial and TOPCon Field Performance

Recent field performance results of TOPCon and PERC Bifacial modules are presented based on small-scale deployments at NLR, and a selection of 3rd-party residential data. Bifacial PERC degradation rates are a median of -1 % / yr with bifacial TOPCon modules at a similar rate of -1.1 %/yr over the first couple of years. Comparable PERC Monofacial modules have a degradation rate of -0.5%/yr. Some TOPCon modules exhibited an indoor dark metastability effect which requires recovery by light soaking or UV exposure prior to IV curve measurement. Further monitoring is needed to confirm the long-term stability of TOPCon modules.
