Sharp, high numerical aperture (NA), nanoimprinted bare pyramid probe for optical mapping

The ability to correlate optical hyperspectral mapping and high resolution topographic imaging is critically important to gain deep insight into the structure–function relationship of nanomaterial systems. Scanning near-field optical microscopy can achieve this goal, but at the cost of significant effort in probe fabrication and experimental expertise. To overcome these two limitations, we have developed a low-cost and high-throughput nanoimprinting technique to integrate a sharp pyramid structure on the end facet of a single-mode fiber that can be scanned with a simple tuning-fork technique. The nanoimprinted pyramid has two main features: (1) a large taper angle (~70°), which determines the far-field confinement at the tip, resulting in a spatial resolution of 275 nm, an effective numerical aperture of 1.06, and (2) a sharp apex with a radius of curvature of ~20 nm, which enables high resolution topographic imaging. Optical performance is demonstrated through evanescent field distribution mapping of a plasmonic nanogroove sample, followed by hyperspectral photoluminescence mapping of nanocrystals using a fiber-in-fiber-out light coupling mode. Through comparative photoluminescence mapping on 2D monolayers, we also show a threefold improvement in spatial resolution over chemically etched fibers. These results show that the bare nanoimprinted near-field probes provide simple access to spectromicroscopy correlated with high resolution topographic mapping and have the potential to advance reproducible fiber-tip-based scanning near-field microscopy.

Measurements of inner-shell excited levels of Na-, Mg-, and Al-like europium on the LLNL EBIT

We report on a measurement of several n = 3 → n = 2 inner-shell transitions in sodiumlike, magnesiumlike, and aluminumlike europium, performed at the EBIT-I electron beam ion trap facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory using an x-ray calorimeter. Although the inner-shell x-ray lines of such M-shell ions are typically dominated by electric dipole allowed transitions, we have also identified a weak feature that appears to be the result of electric quadrupole decay in sodiumlike Eu 52+ . Here, we compare the measured transitions energies to the calculated values obtained using the flexible atomic code. We find agreement in most cases within 2 eV or better.

Absolute nuclear charge radius by Na-like spectral line separation in high-Z elements

Abstract We describe a novel technique to determine absolute nuclear radii of high- Z nuclides. Utilizing accurate theoretical atomic structure calculations together with precise measurements of extreme ultraviolet transitions in highly charged ions this method allows for precise determinations of absolute nuclear charge radii based upon the well-known nuclear radii of their neighboring elements. This method can work for elements without stable isotopes, and its accuracy may be competitive with current methods (electron scattering and muonic x-ray spectroscopy).

Explaining the extra crystal-field mode in 𝐴 ⁢Ce ⁢𝑋 2 (𝐴 = K, Rb, Na; 𝑋 = O, S, Se, Te)

A growing list of Ce-based magnets have shown an extra and heretofore unexplained crystal electric field (CEF) mode at high energies. We describe a process whereby an optical phonon can produce a split CEF mode well above the phonon energy. We use density functional theory and point-charge model calculations to estimate the phonon distortions and coupling to model this effect in KCeO 2 , showing that it accounts for the extra CEF mode observed. Furthermore, this mechanism is generic and may explain the extra modes observed on a variety of Ce 3+ compounds.

Charge density modulation and defect ordering in the $Na_xMnBi_y$ magnetic semimetal

The I-Mn-V antiferromagnet, NaMnBi, develops a very large positive magnetoresistance (MR) up to 10 000% at 2 K and 9 T in crystals showing a semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT). In the absence of an SMT, a modest (20%) MR is achieved. Here, we show that upon cooling below the magnetic transition, a spatial modulation appears giving rise to new Bragg peaks due to charge and defect ordering in a checkerboard pattern, with two kinds of modulation vectors, $q_1 = \left( \frac{2}{3}, 0, 1 \right)$ and $q_2 = \left( \frac{2}{3}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac {1}{2} \right)$. This constitutes a superlattice transition ($T_s$) that lowers the symmetry from the high-temperature centrosymmetric $P4/nmm$ to the noncentrosymmetric $P\overline{4}m2$. In crystals with a large MR, a close to room temperature $T_s$ is observed with $q_1$ appearing first, followed by $q_2$. In crystals with low MR, however, $T_s$ is much lower and only $q_1$ is observed. Finally, the charge modulation and spin fluctuations may both contribute to the enhancement of MR.

First-principles derivation of magnetic interactions in the triangular quantum spin liquid candidates KYb C h 2 ( C h = S , Se , Te ) and A YbSe 2 ( A = Na , Rb )

The AYb Ch 2 (A=alkali metal, Ch=chalcogen) delafossites are a family of crystals which have a triangular lattice of effective S=1/2 moments on their Yb atoms. They hold great promise for the realization of the triangular quantum spin liquid state because of their defect-minimized growth and the ability to interchange chemical constituencies among the family. Here we use ab initio computations to evaluate the exchange couplings of four realized (and one theoretical) rhombohedral delafossite structures and examine the influence of chemical substitution on promoting the development of a quantum spin liquid state. We find good agreement with experiment regarding the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J 1 , but our calculations underestimate J 2 .
