Performance of the Particle-Identification Silicon-Telescope Array coupled with the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer

The Particle-Identification Silicon-Telescope Array (PISTA) is a new detection system designed for high-resolution studies of fission process induced by multi-nucleon transfer in inverse kinematics. It is specifically optimized for experiments with the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer at GANIL (Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds). The array comprises eight trapezoidal ΔE-E silicon telescopes arranged in a lamp shade configuration. Each telescope integrates two single-sided stripped silicon detectors, enabling target-like recoil identification, energy loss measurements, and trajectory reconstruction. Positioned in close proximity to the target, PISTA’s compact geometry achieves high-efficiency tracking of target-like recoils produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions at Coulomb barrier energies. The spatial segmentation of the array allows precise determination of the mass and charge of the target-like nucleus, and excitation energy of fissioning systems. This work presents the particle identification and excitation energy reconstruction performances for the interactions of 238 U beam with 12 C target. An excitation energy resolution of 800 keV (FWHM) was determined together with mass resolution of 1.1% (FWHM). The combination of PISTA and VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer enables unprecedented investigations of the fission process as a function of the excitation energy of the fissioning nucleus, particularly for exotic systems produced in transfer-induced reactions.

Evidence for top quark production in nucleus-nucleus collisions

We report droplets of quark-gluon plasma (QGP), an exotic state of strongly interacting quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter, are routinely produced in heavy nuclei high-energy collisions. Although the experimental signatures marked a paradigm shift away from expectations of a weakly coupled QGP, a challenge remains as to how the locally deconfined state with a lifetime of a few fm can be resolved. The only colored particle that decays mostly within the QGP is the top quark. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, that top quark decay products are identified, irrespective of whether interacting with the medium (bottom quarks) or not (leptonically decaying W bosons). Using 1.7±0.1 nb -1 of lead-lead (A = 208) collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, we report evidence of top quark pair ($t\bar{t}$) production. Dilepton final states are selected, and the cross section ($σ_{t\bar{t}}$) is measured from a likelihood fit to a multivariate discriminator using lepton kinematic variables. The $σ_{t\bar{t}}$ measurement is additionally performed considering the jets originating from the hadronization of bottom quarks, which improve the sensitivity to the $t\bar{t}$ signal process. After background subtraction and analysis corrections, the measured $σ_{t\bar{t}}$ is 2.56 ± 0.82(tot) and 2.02 ± 0.69(tot)μb in the two cases, respectively, consistent with predictions from perturbative QCD.

Recent Measurements of Heavy Quarkonium Production in Au+Au, p+Au and p+p Collisions at STAR

Heavy quarkonia are useful probes of the quark-gluon plasma, where quarkonium dissociation is expected at high enough temperature. Indeed, such a suppression is clearly present in the latest STAR measurements of J/ψ production in Au+Au collisions. The suppression is observed to have little dependence on p T , although cold-nuclear matter (CNM) effects, such as shadowing, anti-shadowing and nuclear absorption can play a significant role at low p T . Measurements of the J/ψ production in p+A collisions can help us to disentangle the CNM effects from the hot medium effects in A+A collisions. In these proceedings, we will present the measurement of J/ψ production in p+Au collisions at √ s NN = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment. In addition, we will present recent STAR measurements of J/ψ and Υ production in p+p collisions including their dependence on the charged-particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity. Furthermore, these measurements are important for understanding the mechanism of the heavy quarkonium production in elementary nucleon-nucleon collisions and the interplay of soft and hard processes.

Isoscalar and isovector giant resonances in 44 Ca, 54 Fe, 64,68 Zn and 56,58,60,68 Ni

We have studied the uncharacteristic behavior of the measured values of the isoscalar and isovector centroid energies, E CEN , of nuclear giant resonances of multipolarity from L = 0 to L = 3 in 44 Ca, 54 Fe, 64,68 Zn and 56,58,60,68 Ni. For this purpose, we carried out calculations of E CEN within the spherical Hartree-Fock (HF)-based random phase approximation (RPA) theory with 33 distinct Skyrme-like effective nucleon-nucleon interactions. We have also determined the Pearson linear correlation coefficients between centroid energies, obtained from the HF-RPA, and the various properties of nuclear matter (NM) of each interaction and determined the sensitivity of E CEN to NM properties. We compared the theoretical values of E CEN obtained from the HF-RPA calculations with experimental data and discuss the results, pointing out significant disagreements between theoretical and experimental values. We note in particular, that we obtain good agreement for the theoretical E CEN of the isovector giant dipole resonance and the available experimental data.

Rapidity distributions of Z = 1 isotopes and the nuclear symmetry energy from Sn+Sn collisions with radioactive beams at 270 MeV/nucleon

The rapidity distributions of hydrogen isotopes emitted from central collisions of neutron-rich 132 Sn+ 124 Sn and neutron-deficient 108 Sn+ 112 Sn systems at 270 MeV/nucleon were investigated at RIKEN-RIBF. The data are compared with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) calculations and the rapidity distributions can be reproduced after adjusting the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections. The double ratios between the two reaction systems taken for the relative yields of deuteron to proton (d/p) and triton to proton (t/p) are further examined in the midrapidity domain, where the adjustments in the AMD calculations do not affect much on them. The d/p and t/p double ratios at midrapidity agree well with the ratio of the system neutron numbers and its squared value, respectively, and the rapidity dependence of these double ratios is consistent with a picture of partial mixing of colliding nuclei. By comparing with the AMD model which shows a strong symmetry energy dependence of the t/p double ratio, the experimental result in the midrapidity domain favors the calculation with a symmetry-energy slope parameter around L = 46 MeV rather than L = 108 MeV.

Measurement of cold nuclear matter effects for inclusive J / ψ in p +Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV

Measurement by the STAR experiment at RHIC of the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects experienced by inclusive J / ψ at mid-rapidity in 0-100% p +Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV is presented. Such effects are quantified utilizing the nuclear modification factor, R p Au , obtained by taking a ratio of J / ψ yield in p +Au collisions to that in p + p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The differential J / ψ yield in both p + p and p +Au collisions is measured through the dimuon decay channel, taking advantage of the trigger capability provided by the Muon Telescope Detector in the RHIC 2015 run. Consequently, the J / ψ R p Au is derived within the transverse momentum ( p T ) range of 0 to 10 GeV/ c . A suppression of approximately 30% is observed for p T < 2 GeV/ c , while J / ψ R p Au becomes compatible with unity for p T greater than 3 GeV/ c , indicating the J / ψ yield is minimally affected by the CNM effects at high p T . Comparison to a similar measurement from 0-20% central Au+Au collisions reveals that the observed strong J / ψ suppression above 3 GeV/ c is mostly due to the hot medium effects, providing strong evidence for the formation of the quark-gluon plasma in these collisions. Several model calculations show qualitative agreement with the measured J / ψ R p Au , while their agreement with the J / ψ yields in p + p and p +Au collisions is worse.

Measurement of the nuclear modification factor for muons from charm and bottom hadrons in Pb+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Heavy-flavour hadron production provides information about the transport properties and microscopic structure of the quark–gluon plasma created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. A measurement of the muons from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom hadrons produced in Pb+Pb and pp collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. The Pb+Pb data were collected in 2015 and 2018 with sampled integrated luminosities of 208 μb –1 and 38 μb –1 , respectively, and pp data with a sampled integrated luminosity of 1.17 pb –1 were collected in 2017. Muons from heavy-flavour semileptonic decays are separated from the light-flavour hadronic background using the momentum imbalance between the inner detector and muon spectrometer measurements, and muons originating from charm and bottom decays are further separated via the muon track's transverse impact parameter. Differential yields in Pb+Pb collisions and differential cross sections in pp collisions for such muons are measured as a function of muon transverse momentum from 4 GeV to 30 GeV in the absolute pseudorapidity interval |n| < 2. Nuclear modification factors for charm and bottom muons are presented as a function of muon transverse momentum in intervals of Pb+Pb collision centrality. The bottom muon results are the most precise measurement of b quark nuclear modification at low transverse momentum where reconstruction of B hadrons is challenging. The measured nuclear modification factors quantify a significant suppression of the yields of muons from decays of charm and bottom hadrons, with stronger effects for muons from charm hadron decays.

QCD analysis of Δ S = 0 hadronic parity violation

We present a QCD analysis of the effective weak Hamiltonian at hadronic energy scales for strangeness-nonchanging (ΔS = 0) hadronic processes. Performing a leading-order renormalization group analysis in QCD from the W to the O(2 GeV) energy scale, we derive the pertinent effective Hamiltonian for hadronic parity violation, including the effects of both neutral and charged weak currents. We compute the complete renormalization group evolution of all isosectors and the evolution through heavy-flavor thresholds for the first time. We show that the additional four-quark operators that enter below the W mass scale from QCD operator mixing effects form a closed set, and they result in a 12 x 12 anomalous dimension matrix. Computing the resulting effective Hamiltonian and comparing to earlier results, we affirm the importance of operator mixing effects and find, as an example, that the parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling constant, using the factorization Ansatz and an assessment of the pertinent quark charge of the nucleon in lattice QCD at the 2 GeV scale, is in better agreement with recent experiments.

Exclusive double quarkonium production and generalized TMDs of gluons

Being the “mother distributions” of all types of two-parton correlation functions, generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (GTMDs) have attracted a lot of attention over the last years. We argue that exclusive double production of pseudoscalar quarkonia (η c or η b ) in nucleon-nucleon collisions gives access to GTMDs of gluons.

Elliptic flow of charged particles at midrapidity relative to the spectator plane in Pb–Pb and Xe–Xe collisions

Measurements of the elliptic flow coefficient relative to the collision plane defined by the spectator neutrons v 2 {$Ψ_{SP}$} in collisions of Pb ions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV and Xe ions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.44 TeV are reported. The results are presented for charged particles produced at midrapidity as a function of centrality and transverse momentum for the 5–70% and 0.2–6 GeV/c ranges, respectively. The ratio between v 2 {$Ψ_{SP}$} and the elliptic flow coefficient relative to the participant plane v 2 {4}, estimated using four-particle correlations, deviates by up to 20% from unity depending on centrality. This observation differs strongly from the magnitude of the corresponding eccentricity ratios predicted by the T R ENTo and the elliptic power models of initial state fluctuations that are tuned to describe the participant plane anisotropies. The differences can be interpreted as a decorrelation of the neutron spectator plane and the reaction plane because of fragmentation of the remnants from the colliding nuclei, which points to an incompleteness of current models describing the initial state fluctuations. A significant transverse momentum dependence of the ratio v 2 {$Ψ_{SP}$} /v 2 {4} is observed in all but the most central collisions, which may help to understand whether momentum anisotropies at low and intermediate transverse momentum have a common origin in initial state fluctuations. The ratios of v 2 {$Ψ_{SP}$} and v 2 {4} to the corresponding initial state eccentricities for Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions at similar initial entropy density show a difference of (7.0 ± 0.9)% with an additional variation of +1.8% when including RHIC data in the T R ENTo parameter extraction. These observations provide new experimental constraints for viscous effects in the hydrodynamic modeling of the expanding quark–gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC.

Constraining hadronization mechanisms with Λ c + / D 0 production ratios in Pb–Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV

The production of prompt $\ Λ^{+}_{c}$ baryons at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) was measured in central (0–10%) and mid-central (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ TeV with the ALICE detector. The results are more precise, more differential in centrality, and reach much lower transverse momentum (p T =1 GeV/c) with respect to previous measurements performed by the ALICE, STAR, and CMS Collaborations in nucleus–nucleus collisions, allowing for an extrapolation down to p T =0. The p T -differential $\ Λ^{+}_{c}$/D 0 ratio is enhanced with respect to the pp measurement for 4 < p T < 8 GeV/c by 3.7 standard deviations (σ), while the p T -integrated ratios are compatible within 1σ. The observed trend is similar to that observed in the strange sector for the Λ/$\ K^{0}_{S}$ ratio. Model calculations including coalescence or statistical hadronization for charm-hadron formation are compared with the data.

Search for medium effects using jets from bottom quarks in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{^SNN}$ = 5.02 TeV

The first study of the shapes of jets arising from bottom (b) quarks in heavy ion collisions is presented. Jet shapes are studied using charged hadron constituents as a function of their radial distance from the jet axis. Lead-lead (PbPb) collision data at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV were recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 1.69 nb-1. Compared to proton-proton collisions, a redistribution of the energy in b jets to larger distances from the jet axis is observed in PbPb collisions. This medium-induced redistribution is found to be substantially larger for b jets than for inclusive jets.

Level structures of 56,58 Ca cast doubt on a doubly magic 60 Ca

Gamma decays were observed in 56 Ca and 58 Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from 57,59 Sc beams at ≈200 MeV/nucleon. For 56 Ca, a γ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for 58 Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the $2^{+}_{1}\rightarrow0^{+}_{gs}$ decays, and were compared to results from ab initio and conventional shell-model approaches. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for $2^{+}_{1}$ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the N = 34 shell. Its constituents, the 0$f$ 5/2 and 0$g$ 9/2 orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic 60 Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to 70 Ca or even beyond.

Measurement of the radius dependence of charged-particle jet suppression in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV

The ALICE Collaboration reports a differential measurement of inclusive jet suppression using pp and Pb–Pb collision data at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed using the anti-$k_T$ algorithm with resolution parameters R=0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 in pp collisions and R=0.2, 0.4, 0.6 in central (0–10%), semi-central (30–50%), and peripheral (60–80%) Pb–Pb collisions. A novel approach based on machine learning is employed to mitigate the influence of jet background. This enables measurements of inclusive jet suppression in new regions of phase space, including down to the lowest jet $p_T$ ≥ 40 GeV/c at R=0.6 in central Pb–Pb collisions. This is an important step for discriminating different models of jet quenching in the quark–gluon plasma. The transverse momentum spectra, nuclear modification factors, derived cross section, and nuclear modification factor ratios for different jet resolution parameters of charged-particle jets are presented and compared to model predictions. A mild dependence of the nuclear modification factor ratios on collision centrality and resolution parameter is observed. The results are compared to a variety of jet-quenching models with varying levels of agreement.

Modification of charged-particle jets in event-shape engineered Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Charged-particle jet yields have been measured in semicentral Pb–Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. These yields are reported as a function of the jet transverse momentum, and further classified by their angle with respect to the event plane and the event shape, characterized by ellipticity, in an effort to study the path-length dependence of jet quenching. Jets were reconstructed at midrapidity from charged-particle tracks using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameters R = 0.2 and 0.4, with event-plane angle and event-shape values determined using information from forward scintillating detectors. The results presented in this letter show that, in semicentral Pb–Pb collisions, there is no significant difference between jet yields in predominantly isotropic and elliptical events. However, out-of-plane jets are observed to be more suppressed than in-plane jets. Further, this relative suppression is greater for low transverse momentum (< 50 GeV/c) R = 0.2 jets produced in elliptical events, with out-of-plane to in-plane jet-yield ratios varying up to 5.2σ between different event-shape classes. These results agree with previous studies indicating that jets experience azimuthally anisotropic suppression when traversing the QGP medium, and can provide additional constraints on the path-length dependence of jet energy loss.

$K^0_S$ and $Λ(\overline{Λ})$ two-particle femtoscopic correlations in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02TeV

Two-particle correlations are presented for $K^0_S$, $Λ$, and $\overline{Λ}$ strange hadrons as a function of relative momentum in lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.607 nb -1 and was collected using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. These correlations are sensitive to quantum statistics and to final-state interactions between the particles. The source size extracted from the $K^0_S$$K^0_S$ correlations is found to decrease from 4.6 to 1.6 fm in going from central to peripheral collisions. Strong interaction scattering parameters (i.e., scattering length and effective range) are determined from the $ΛK^0_S$ and $ΛΛ$ (including their charge conjugates) correlations using the Lednický–Lyuboshitz model and are compared to theoretical and other experimental results.

Quenching of the quantum p -strength in light exotic nuclei

One-nucleon spectroscopic overlaps, their strength or spectroscopic factors (SFs), and nucleon removal cross sections for light nuclei in the mass range A≤12 were evaluated using the fully correlated Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) wave functions (WFs). Harder (AV18+UX) and softer (NV2+3) bare interactions were used providing consistent results. The SFs were also taken from simple Shell Model (SM) calculations. This structure information was incorporated in the standard three-body Faddeev/Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas reaction formalism to evaluate the (p,pN) cross sections. The results further our understanding of the quenching of the quantum p-shell strength obtained from structure and reactions. We have found the ratios of the total QMC sums of SFs to the SM ones to be uniform and ∼ 3/4. The corresponding ratios of the sums Below Particle Threshold (BPT) of SFs, as well as of total cross sections, deviate strikingly from the uniform trend in some special cases. We find these ratios to be close to unit for 9 Li → 8 Li + n and 9 C → 8 B + p. In contrast, they are strongly reduced for 11 C → 10 C + n and 11 B → 10 Be + p mirror transitions, resulting from the quenching of the strength for low-lying 2 + final state transitions. The QMC theoretical cross section BPT for 11 C(p,pn) is about two times smaller than the experimental data.
