Kinetics and Mechanism of Ce(IV) Phase Transfer by the Neutral Extractants Tributyl Phosphate and N,N -Di(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide

Tributyl phosphate and N,N-di(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide (DEHiBA) are uranium-selective extractants that could be used to recover low-enriched uranium from commercial used nuclear fuel. The economic viability of liquid-liquid extraction processes for chemical separations depends on both thermodynamic and kinetic considerations. Here we used microfluidic droplet extraction to measure interfacial phase transfer rate constants for the extraction and stripping of Ce(IV), a non-radioactive actinide surrogate. The Damkohler numbers for each system were calculated and the phase transfer processes were determined to be diffusion-limited under all conditions, contrary to prior studies using constant interface stirred cells and single drop methods. A well-extracted 2:1 DEHiBA/Ce(IV) complex in the organic phase was determined from batch distribution studies, suggesting a different extraction mechanism for Ce(IV) compared with poorly extracted Pu(IV). Finally, phase disengagement rates were found to be rapid in both systems, in agreement with other studies.

Exploiting Metal–Ligand Cooperativity to Sequester, Activate, and Reduce Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide with a Neutral Zinc Complex

As atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) continue to increase, there is an immediate need to balance the carbon cycle. Current approaches require multiple processes to fix CO 2 from the atmosphere or flue gas and then reduce it to value-added products. The zinc(II) catalyst Zn(DMTH) (DMTH = diacetyl-2-(4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazonate)-3-(2-pyridinehydrazonato)) reduces CO 2 from air to formate with a faradaic efficiency of 15.1% based on total charge. The catalyst utilizes metal–ligand cooperativity and redox-active ligands to fix, activate, and reduce CO 2 . Our approach provides a new strategy that incorporates sustainable earth-abundant metals that are oxygen and water tolerant.

Stochastic Real-Time Second-Order Green’s Function Theory for Neutral Excitations in Molecules and Nanostructures

We present a real-time second-order Green’s function (GF) method for computing excited states in molecules and nanostructures, with a computational scaling of O(N e 3 ), where N e is the number of electrons. The cubic scaling is achieved by adopting the stochastic resolution of the identity to decouple the 4-index electron repulsion integrals. To improve the time propagation and the spectral resolution, we adopt the dynamic mode decomposition technique and assess the accuracy and efficiency of the combined approach for a chain of hydrogen dimer molecules of different lengths. We find that the stochastic implementation accurately reproduces the deterministic results for the electronic dynamics and excitation energies. Furthermore, we provide a detailed analysis of the statistical errors, bias, and long-time extrapolation. Overall, the approach offers an efficient route to investigate excited states in extended systems with open or closed boundary conditions.

Theoretical Pathway toward Improved Reverse Osmosis Membrane Selectivity for Neutral Solutes: Inspiration from Gas Separations

We report highly rigid membrane materials with tailored structures have exhibited permeabilities and selectivities that exceed the polymer upper bound in gaseous and organic solvent separations for challenging mixtures containing species that are similar in size and shape. One potential question is whether such membrane materials can maintain meaningful guest diffusivities in situations where the microporous spaces are essentially full of guest molecules. Here, we use a simplified transition state theory approach to estimate the diffusivity of water and small organics within a microporous membrane. The transition state theory model is parameterized using experimental values from zeolites and carbon molecular sieve materials found in the literature. We demonstrate the differences in transport and Maxwell–Stefan diffusivities based on guest species loading with different isotherm behaviors. These calculations theorize a path forward for highly selective reverse osmosis membranes for aqueous phase separations.

2,4,6-Triphenylpyridinium-Substituted Neutral Nickel Catalysts: Ethylene Polymerization, Influence of Activator, Catalyst Decomposition, and End-Group Analysis

The reactivity of 2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium-substituted nickel(II)-salicyliminato catalysts in ethylene polymerization has been explored. Here, the known complex 6a equipped with a 2,6-diisopropylphenyl group affords polyethylene with M n = 10-12 kDa at 19 ⁰C, while 8a possessing the bulkier 2,6-diphenylphenyl moiety gives polymer with M n = 270-310 kDa. The stability of catalyst 6a depends on the borane activator. If B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 is employed, enhanced stability is observed compared with using 3H 2 O·B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 activator. Catalyst 6a decomposes forming a hydroxyl-bridged dimer 14 which may be reac-tivated, albeit inefficiently, by excess borane activator. Polymer formed by 6a contains ca. 3-6% of 2-trifluoromethylphenyl, pentafluorophenyl, and 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl end groups combined. The pentafluoro-phenyl end group originates from reaction of 6a with borane activator, and from reactivation of hydroxyl-bridged dimer 14. 3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl end groups are likely formed in a reaction sequence initiated by protonation of one aryl group in NaBArF which creates B[C 6 H 3 (CF 3 ) 2 ] 3 . The triarylborane can then react with 6a or 14 transferring the 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl group to nickel.

Heterogenization of Homogeneous Ruthenium(II) Catalysts for Carbon-Neutral Dehydrogenation of Polyalcohols

Liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) systems are an excellent alternative to pressurized gas and liquid hydrogen storage technologies due to their high volumetric storage capacities and straightforward adaptation to existing infrastructure. Homogeneous catalysts are promising for the selective and reversible release of hydrogen from LOHC. However, separation from product mixtures and recycling inhibit their use, particularly when comprised of costly low-abundance elements, motivating the development of heterogeneous versions that are more easily recovered and reused. Here, we describe two methods for the heterogenization of molecular Ru catalysts that efficiently dehydrogenate the polyalcohol LOHCs ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). The heterogeneous versions of these catalysts maintain catalytic activity for hydrogen production comparable to the homogeneous complexes, with up to 81% conversion and 99% selectivity. Further, DFT modeling indicates mechanistic similarities for the dehydrogenations of EG and 1,2-PDO, with the rate-limiting steps associated with protonation of the Ru–H bond to form H 2 and the alkoxide species coordinated to Ru(II), followed by β-hydride elimination to regenerate the Ru–H bond. Overall, the data suggest these heterogenized molecular catalysts have potential for practical use in polyalcohol-based LOHC systems.

High Energy Density Aqueous Flow Battery Utilizing Extremely Stable, Branching-Induced High-Solubility Anthraquinone near Neutral pH

An anthraquinone featuring a chiral carboxylate-capped methyl-branched side chain with an ether linkage, 2,2'-((9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydroanthracene-2,6-diyl)bis(oxy))dipropionic acid (2,6-D2PEAQ), was synthesized and evaluated for use in aqueous redox flow batteries. It was found to have an extraordinary solubility of 2 M (4 M electrons), corresponding to a theoretical volumetric capacity of 107.2 Ah/L for the negative electrolyte, which is 10 times that of its unbranched counterpart. The 2,6-D2PEAQ molecule demonstrated stability against thermal 2 decomposition and was extremely stable under cell cycling conditions. Here, a capacity fade rate of 0.02% day over 14 days was demonstrated in a 1.1 M 2,6-D2PEAQ nearly capacity-balanced cell when paired with a ferro-/ferricyanide posolyte at pH 7. Compared to other aqueous redoxactive organic molecules, its demonstrated fade rate is lower than that of any molecule with a demonstrated volumetric capacity of ≥55 Ah/L, and its volumetric capacity is greater than that of any molecule with a demonstrated fade rate of ≤0.5%/day.
