Electropneumatic transducer automatically limits motor current

Pneumatic controller regulates the load on a centrifugal freon compressor in a water cooling system, thus limiting the current input to an electric motor driving it. An electromechanical transducer monitoring the motor input current sends out air signals which indicate changes in the current to the pneumatic controller.

Solid state circuit controls direction, speed, and braking of dc motor

Full-wave bridge rectifier circuit controls the direction, speed, and braking of a dc motor. Gating in the circuit of Silicon Controlled Rectifiers /SCRS/ controls output polarity and braking is provided by an SCR that is gated to short circuit the reverse voltage generated by reversal of motor rotation.

Simple motor drive system operates heavy hinged door

Motor drive system remotely operates heavy steel radiation shielding doors. The drive consists of a standard motor reducer unit which is mounted on the door. This reducer drives a sprocket which is linked by chain to a fixed sprocket of the same size on the door jamb.

Circuit increases capability of hysteresis synchronous motor

Frequency and phase detector circuit enables a hysteresis synchronous motor to drive a load of given torque value at a precise speed determined by a stable reference. This technique permits driving larger torque loads with smaller motors and lower power drain.

Flueric-controller pneumatic stepping motor system

Nutating stepping motor consists of an output rotating gear and a nutating gear. A flueric logic circuit controls the nutating motor. The complete system constitutes a reliable, open loop actuator system with inherently high output stiffness, reasonable slewing speeds and small step size.

A brushless dc spin motor for momentum exchange altitude control

Brushless dc spin motor is designed to use Hall effect probes as means of revolving rotor position and controlling motor winding currents. This results in 3 to 1 reduction in watt-hours required for wheel acceleration, a 2 to 1 reduction in power to run wheel, and a 10 to 1 reduction in the electronics size and weight.

A motor canister designed for prolonged operation in space

A special canister was designed to protest the dc motors used on the ISIS 1 antenna unit. The canister is provided with a pressure-monitoring device and has a special shaft seal that imparts minimum load to the motor output shaft. The development and flight testing of the canister are discussed. Problems that were encountered during fabrication and inspection and the problems caused by material/lubricant incompatibility and low temperature are also discussed.

Nondestructive testing of Scout rocket motors

The nondestructive tests applied to Scout rocket motors were reviewed and appraised. Analytical techniques were developed to evaluate the capabilities of the radiographic and ultrasonic procedures used. Major problem areas found were the inadequacy of high voltage radiography for detecting unbonds and propellant cracks having narrow widths, the inability to relate the ultrasonic signals received from flat-bottomed holes in standards to those received from real defects and in the general area of the specification of acceptance criteria and how these were to be met. To counter the deficiencies noted, analyses were conducted to the potential utility of radiometric, acoustic, holographic and thermographic techniques for motor and nozzle bond inspection, a new approach to qualifying magnetic particle inspection and the application of acoustic emission analysis to the evaluation of proof and leak test data.

Hybrid circuit modules for motor commutation and control

Thick film hybrid techniques are used to develop circuitry for a brushless dc motor commutator. The power commutator contains the driving circuit and an amplifier that controls the armature current. A position decoder contains digital integrated circuits which receive the signals from the armature position sensors and generate the driving signals for the power commutator in the proper sequence. These units drive motors with stall currents up to about 400 mA.

Study of solid rocket motor for a space shuttle booster

The study of solid rocket motors for a space shuttle booster was directed toward definition of a parallel-burn shuttle booster using two 156-in.-dia solid rocket motors. The study effort was organized into the following major task areas: system studies, preliminary design, program planning, and program costing.

Long-term storage test of a Syncom solid rocket motor

After 7.5 years of storage at ambient temperature, a solid propellant apogee motor was tested successfully. The performance of the motor did not deteriorate as a result of prolonged storage. Tabular performance data and graphic thrust and pressure variations are given.

Filament-wound graphite/epoxy rocket motor case

The fabrication procedures are described for a filament-wound rocket motor case, approximately 56 cm long x 71 cm diameter, utilizing high tensile strength graphite fibers. The process utilized Fiberite Hy-E-1330B prepreg tape which consists of Courtaulds HTS fibers in a temperature-sensitive epoxy matrix. This fabrication effort, with resultant design, material and process recommendations, substantiates the manufacturing feasibility of graphite/epoxy rocket motor cases in the 56 cm x 71 cm size range.
