Optimizing multichannel luminaire control using a color efficient matrix

The described embodiments relate to multichannel luminaires (102, 212, 404) that employ a color coefficient matrix (CCM) that can be used to adjust an operation of the multichannel luminaires according to their contribution of light to an area (112, 402). The CCM can be generated based on images captured within the area and/or a software simulation that approximates the contribution of light from the multichannel luminaires to the area. Once the CCM has been generated, the CCM can be used to compensate control signals to each multichannel luminaire in order to provide more accurate color rendering and uniform light distribution. Furthermore, feedback from embedded sensors (206) in the multichannel luminaires and/or sensors (116, 208, 210, 418) in the area can provide further basis for compensating control signals according to the qualities of the natural and artificial light entering the area, and the effects of different surfaces (128) on the light.

Source identification by non-negative matrix factorization combined with semi-supervised clustering

Machine-learning methods and apparatus are provided to solve blind source separation problems with an unknown number of sources and having a signal propagation model with features such as wave-like propagation, medium-dependent velocity, attenuation, diffusion, and/or advection, between sources and sensors. In exemplary embodiments, multiple trials of non-negative matrix factorization are performed for a fixed number of sources, with selection criteria applied to determine successful trials. A semi-supervised clustering procedure is applied to trial results, and the clustering results are evaluated for robustness using measures for reconstruction quality and cluster separation. The number of sources is determined by comparing these measures for different trial numbers of sources. Source locations and parameters of the signal propagation model can also be determined. Disclosed methods are applicable to a wide range of spatial problems including chemical dispersal, pressure transients, and electromagnetic signals, and also to non-spatial problems such as cancer mutation.

Density Matrix Quantum Circuit Simulation via the BSP Machine on Modern GPU Clusters

As quantum computers evolve, simulations of quantum programs on classical computers will be essential in validating quantum algorithms, understanding the effect of system noise, and design applications for future quantum computers. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-GPU programming model called MG-BSP that constructs a virtual BSP machine on top of modern multi-GPU platforms, and tweak the programming model to build a multi-GPU density matrix quantum simulator. We propose and evaluated a new formulation minimizing communication and prove that the transformation conserves original semantics when noise is introduced. We build the tool-chain to support quantum assembly open standard, synthesize testing quantum circuit, and enable ultra-deep quantum simulation. We evaluated our design on four state-of-the-art multi-GPU platforms including the latest DGX-1 and DGX-2 systems. We demonstrate simulation of 1 million gates in 94 minutes, far deeper circuits than has been demonstrated in prior work. A roofline-model analysis show that we have reached near-optimal performance under memory bound.

Analysis of Various Polysulfone-nanodiamond Mixed-Matrix Membranes

Historically, coal combustion systems have contributed to the extensive network of energy production across the world. Oxycombustion has been shown to be more energy efficient and can facilitate carbon capture from fossil energy utilization. The challenge for small modular deployment of coal combustion or gasification systems is that current O2 enrichment technologies do not scale downward cost-effectively. Fortunately, membrane processes have been developed to offer a more viable polymer-based technology for this application. The central focus is to deliver a high-performance polymer membrane capable of enriching O2 to 90-95% in oxycombustion systems for small modular coal-based power or gasification plants. To accomplish this, various properties of polysulfone-nanodiamond mixed-matrix membrane are examined to determine the appropriate conditions for applicable use. The polymers are infused with nanoparticles to increase the mechanical functionality of the structure which in turn alters the permeability and selectivity of the membrane. Furthermore, the thermal history can also impact the functionality and characteristics of these polymer systems. This study primarily discusses the structure and function of these assorted membranes in terms of permeability and thermomechanical characteristics.

Reconstruction of Fission Product Distribution from Tomographic Scans in TRISO Fuel Graphitic Matrix and Nuclear Grade Graphites

An image reconstruction method was developed to rectify shortcomings of earlier methods that became apparent as destructively sampled data became available. This reconstruction method was applied to the tomographic gamma scans of nuclear graphite and graphitic matrix samples from AGR-3/4. There is generally agreement between profiles measured via destructive sampling of these rings and profiles from tomographic reconstruction.

239 Pu R -matrix Analysis and Neutron Multiplicities in the Neutron Energy Region up to a few keVs [Abstract]

The evaluation of 239 Pu neutron resonance parameters coupled to neutron multiplicities $\overline{v}_p$ is of particular importance to investigate the ($\mathcal{n, γf}$) reaction in which a $\mathcal{γ}$-ray emission occurs before the scission of the compound nuclear. This reaction has offered one explanation for the fluctuations in the measured values of $\overline{v}_p$ In this regard, the competition between ($\mathcal{n, γf}$) reaction and the direct fission process can be also included in the R matrix analysis of fission and capture measured data. The goal of this work is the coupled evaluation of the $\mathcal{n}$+ 239 Pu resonance parameters and related neutron multiplicities by ensuring the adoption of thermal neutron constants recently evaluated at the International Atomic Nuclear Energy as well as the recommended (thermal-neutron) induced prompt neutron fission spectrum (PFNS). Moreover, this new set of physical evaluated quantities should also guarantee the agreement for high-leakage solution benchmarks while keeping the good performance of large thermal solution assemblies.

Status of Lattice QCD Calculations of One and Two-Nucleon Matrix Elements

Lattice QCD calculations of basic hadronic quantities are now often performed with systematic control over the physical pion mass, continuum and infinite volume limits. This progress signals a new era in which lattice QCD will be used to compute basic properties of hadrons, nucleons and light nuclei directly from the Standard Model (SM). In particular, we will be able to use lattice QCD, combined with Effective Field Theory, to make quantitative statements about the interaction of SM matter and potential beyond the SM physics ranging from direct dark matter detection to permanent electric dipole moments. I will briefly review the status and challenges of lattice QCD calculations of select one- and two-nucleon matrix elements. These calculations are significantly more challenging than the basic quantities computed with all systematics controlled, but substantial progress is being made.

Stable Element Doping of Sol-gel Toward Simulating Environmental Matrix in Surrogate Explosive Nuclear Debris

Training nuclear forensic analysis personnel in post-detonation scenarios is of critical importance to nuclear threat response capabilities. Thus, realistic nuclear debris simulants which resemble the size, color, elemental composition, and radionuclide content of actual nuclear fallout from a recent detonation would be valuable for training nuclear first responders in realistic scenarios. As nuclear fallout types vary significantly in each of these parameters based on detonation environment (rural, urban, maritime etc.) and collection location, the ability to tailor each of these parameters accurately in simulated debris would be of immense benefit to the post-detonation analysis community for training both in-field collections and triage and the validation of laboratory level nuclear forensic techniques. Sol-gel synthesis techniques can provide the tunability of size, shape and composition required for producing surrogate nuclear debris of a wide variety. The sol-gel process consists of forming a metal oxide material, often silica, through polymerization of a metal-alkoxy precursor. In this work, we characterize the ability to load the sol-gel particles with secondary elemental components such as iron, aluminum, and calcium toward approximating the elemental composition of debris from various detonation environments and demonstrate the ability to produce particles with controllable size, shape, and color. We also demonstrate quantitative radionuclide encapsulation toward reproducing the radionuclide content of actual fallout from a recent detonation. Finally, we then employ these techniques in producing simulated aerodynamic debris samples with realistic elemental matrix composition and radionuclide content simulating a recent uranium-fueled detonation taking place in a rural desert environment and compare it to historic fallout from the Nevada Nuclear Security Site.

R “SHINY” GUI DEVELOPMENT FOR URANIUM ISOTOPIC ANALYSIS WITH MATRIX-ASSISTED IONIZATION MASS SPECTROMETRY

The international nuclear safeguards community continues to seek rapid, accurate, and precise characterization capabilities for the in-field measurement of uranium isotopic compositions in nuclear facilities. Mass spectrometry (MS) is considered the “gold standard” for analysis of relatively long-lived actinides such as uranium (U) and plutonium; however, conventional MS analysis often requires time consuming sample preparation and complex analytical methodologies that are difficult to perform in-field or in-facility. Matrix assisted ionization (MAI) is a novel ambient ionization MS technique (i.e., MAI-MS) that potentially addresses these challenges due to the relative simplicity of the ionization phenomenon and ruggedness of ambient MS instrumentation. Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL, USA) has demonstrated this technique for nanogram-level 235U/238U isotope ratio measurements within seconds, with percent-level analytical uncertainties capable of discriminating depleted, natural, and low-enriched uranium. Current experimental work on developing MAI methods for uranium isotopic analysis has been enabled by parallel development of a comprehensive MAI-MS data analysis suite at SRNL. Development of this bespoke data analysis software was necessary because commercially available ambient MS software is poorly suited for uranium isotope ratio measurement. The effort leverages the power of R, a popular open-source programming language, and Shiny, an R package providing tools for graphical user interface (GUI) and web interface coding. This software allows researchers without any programming experience to harness and utilize R’s considerable data analysis/visualization power.
