Thermophysical properties of FLiBe using moment tensor potentials

Fluoride salts are prospective materials for applications in some next-generation nuclear reactors and their thermophysical properties at various conditions are of interest. Experimental measurement of the properties of these salts is often difficult and, in some cases, unfeasible due to challenges from high temperatures, impurity control, and corrosivity. Therefore, accurate theoretical methods are needed for fluoride salt property prediction. In this work, we used moment tensor potentials (MTP) to approximate the potential energy surface of eutectic FLiBe (66.6% LiF – 33.3% BeF2) predicted by the ab initio (DFT-D3) method. Here, we then used the developed potential and molecular dynamics to obtain several thermophysical properties of FLiBe, including radial distribution functions, density, self-diffusion coefficients, thermal expansion, specific heat capacity, bulk modulus, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. Our results show that the MTP potential approximates the potential energy surface accurately and the overall approach yields very good agreement with experimental values. The converged fitting can be obtained with less than 600 configurations generated from DFT calculations, which data can be generated in just 1200 core hours on today's typical processors. The MTP potential is faster than many machine learning potentials and about one order of magnitude slower than widely used empirical molten salt potentials such as Tosi/Fumi.

Multifunctional Cu 2 TSiS 4 (T = Mn and Fe): Polar Semiconducting Antiferromagnets with Nonlinear Optical Properties

In this work, Cu 2 TSiS 4 (T = Mn and Fe) polycrystalline and single-crystal materials were prepared with high-temperature solid-state and chemical vapor transport methods, respectively. The polar crystal structure (space group Pmn2 1 ) consists of chains of corner-sharing and distorted CuS 4 , Mn/FeS 4 , and SiS 4 tetrahedra, which is confirmed by Rietveld refinement using neutron powder diffraction data, X-ray single-crystal refinement, electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and second harmonic generation (SHG) techniques. Magnetic measurements indicate that both compounds order antiferromagnetically at 8 and 14 K, respectively, which is supported by the temperature-dependent (100–2 K) neutron powder diffraction data. Additional magnetic reflections observed at 2 K can be modeled by magnetic propagation vectors k = (1/2,0,1/2) and k = (1/2,1/2,1/2) for Cu 2 MnSiS 4 and Cu 2 FeSiS 4 , respectively. The refined antiferromagnetic structure reveals that the Mn/Fe spins are canted away from the ac plane by about 14°, with the total magnetic moments of Mn and Fe being 4.1(1) and 2.9(1) μ B , respectively. Both compounds exhibit an SHG response with relatively modest second-order nonlinear susceptibilities. Density functional theory calculations are used to describe the electronic band structures.

Investigation of the NO reduction by CO reaction over oxidized and reduced NiO x /CeO 2 catalysts

CeO 2 -supported NiO x catalysts have been widely studied in various catalytic reactions including NO reduction by CO. This work is mainly focused on investigation of the impact of catalyst synthesis conditions (e.g., oxidation and reduction) on the physicochemical properties of NiO x /CeO 2 catalysts and the catalytic response for the NO reduction by CO reaction. The oxide NiO x /CeO 2 sample was prepared by an incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) method and reduced under hydrogen reduction treatment at high temperatures (500 and 700 °C). The physicochemical properties of the synthesized samples were characterized by BET analysis, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, XPS, EELS and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The results showed that higher reduction temperature led to the decrease in specific surface area (SSA), fewer oxygen vacancy/defect site, larger crystallite size of the CeO 2 support, and formation of metallic Ni on the surface. The oxidized NiO x /CeO 2 catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity, indicating that the presence of oxygen vacancy/defect sites, Ni 2+ oxidation state, and smaller crystallite size are believed to enhance the catalytic activity. In situ DRIFTS confirmed the generation of several intermediate species, such as nitrate, carbonate, and N 2 O. Finally, on the basis of in situ DRIFTS and activity results, the possible reaction mechanism of NO reduction by CO over NiO x /CeO 2 was proposed.

Environmental creep-fatigue and weld creep cracking: a summary of design and fitness-for-service practices

This report surveys current creep-fatigue design and fitness-for-service assessment procedures, with a particular focus on environmental effects and creep-fatigue cracking near weldments. Included in this assessment are the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III, Division 5, the British R5 standard, the French RCC-MRx design code, the ITER Structural Design Criteria, and the API-579/ASME FFS-1 fitness-for-service rules for petrochemical components. The focus of this review is to identify gaps in the available methods that could prevent regulators from evaluating future high temperature reactor designs. The report makes recommendations, where appropriate, on actions that could be taken to fill these gaps by either providing adequate assessment procedures for creep-fatigue damage in harsh environments or by evaluating strategies vendors could use to mitigate regulatory concerns with creep-fatigue damage in high temperature reactor components.

225 Ac-MACROPATATE: A Novel α-Particle Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy for Neuroendocrine Tumors

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) express somatostatin receptors (SSTRs) 2 and 5. Modified variants of somatostatin, the cognate ligand for SSTR2 and SSTR5, are used in treatment for metastatic and locoregional disease. Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy with 177 Lu-DOTATATE (DOTA-octreotate), a β-particle–emitting somatostatin derivative, has demonstrated survival benefit in patients with SSTR-positive NETs. Despite excellent results, a subset of patients has tumors that are resistant to treatment, and alternative agents are needed. Targeted α-particle therapy has been shown to kill tumors that are resistant to targeted β-particle therapy, suggesting that targeted α-particle therapy may offer a promising treatment option for patients with 177 Lu-DOTATATE–resistant disease. Although DOTATATE can chelate the clinically relevant α-particle–emitting radionuclide 225 Ac, the labeling reaction requires high temperatures, and the resulting radioconjugate has suboptimal stability. Methods: We designed and synthesized MACROPATATE (MACROPA-octreotate), a novel radioconjugate capable of chelating 225 Ac at room temperature, and assessed its in vitro and in vivo performance. Results: MACROPATATE demonstrated comparable affinity to DOTATATE (dissociation constant, 21 nM) in U2-OS-SSTR2, a SSTR2-positive transfected cell line. 225 Ac-MACROPATATE demonstrated superior serum stability at 37°C over time compared with 225 Ac-DOTATATE. Biodistribution studies demonstrated higher tumor uptake of 225 Ac-MACROPATATE than of 225 Ac-DOTATATE in mice engrafted with subcutaneous H69 NETs. Therapy studies showed that 225 Ac-MACROPATATE exhibits significant antitumor and survival benefit compared with saline control in mice engrafted with SSTR-positive tumors. However, the increased accumulation of 225 Ac-MACROPATATE in liver and kidneys and subsequent toxicity to these organs decreased its therapeutic index compared with 225 Ac-DOTATATE. Conclusion: 225 Ac-MACROPATATE and 225 Ac-DOTATATE exhibit favorable therapeutic efficacy in animal models. Because of elevated liver and kidney accumulation and lower administered activity for dose-limiting toxicity of 225 Ac-MACROPATATE, 225 Ac-DOTATATE was deemed the superior agent for targeted α-particle peptide receptor radionuclide therapy.

Leak test for solid oxide fuel cells and solid oxide electrolysis cells

A simple, fast, and economical alcohol penetration method for assessing the solid oxide cell to metal window frame seal in a typical planar design is presented. An alcohol such as ethanol or isopropanol is placed into the cavity of a cell sealed to the window frame. Within 3–5 min, one can determine if the glass seal is hermetic by visual observation along the seal edges on the side of the sealed frame. Cross bubbling and open circuit voltage methods for determining whether the seal failed or cracked at high temperature after final stack firing are also discussed.

Methods to Create Novel La 2- x Sr x CuO 4 Devices with Multiple Atomically Sharp Interfaces

We present methods to create devices that utilize the high-temperature superconductor La 2-x Sr x CuO 4 grown by atomic layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (ALL-MBE). The ALL-MBE synthesis technique provides atomically precise interfaces necessary for the tunnel junctions, Josephson junctions, and dyon detection devices that will be considered. A series of microfabrication processing steps using established techniques are given for each device, and their details are discussed. These procedures are easily extended to generate more complex designs and could be suitable for a wider variety of materials.

Space shuttle wheels and brakes

The Space Shuttle Orbiter wheels were subjected to a combination of tests which are different than any previously conducted in the aerospace industry. The major testing difference is the computer generated dynamic landing profiles used during the certification process which subjected the wheels and tires to simulated landing loading conditions. The orbiter brakes use a unique combination of carbon composite linings and beryllium heat sink to minimize weight. The development of a new lining retention method was necessary in order to withstand the high temperature generated during the braking roll. As with many programs, the volume into which this hardware had to fit was established early in the program, with no provisions made for growth to offset the continuously increasing predicted orbiter landing weight.

An electron diffraction study of alkali chloride vapors

A study of monomers and dimers of the four alkali chlorides NaCl, KCl, RbCl, and CsCl in the vapor phase using the counting method of high energy electron diffraction is reported. Nozzle temperatures from 850-960 K were required to achieve the necessary vapor pressures of approximately 0.01 torr. Using harmonic calculations for the monomer and dimer 1 values, a consistent set of structures for all four molecules was obained. The corrected monomer distances reproduce the microwave values very well. The experiment yields information on the amount of dimer present in the vapor, and these results are compared with thermodynamic values.

A new method is proposed for characterizing and predicting the thermal fatigue behavior of materials. The method is based on three innovations in characterizing high temperature material behavior: (1) the bithermal concept of fatigue testing; (2) advanced, nonlinear, cyclic constitutive models; and (3) the total strain version of traditional strainrange partitioning.

Temperature control in wafer-level testing of large multi-segment electromigration test structures

The paper describes two methods for maintaining a constant metallization temperature throughout a wafer-level isothermal electromigration test of large multisegment test structures where Joule-heating is high and chip to chuck thermal contact is poor. In the first method, an initial calibration of Joule heating versus metal temperature is carried out. During the isothermal electromigration test, the Joule heating is continuously monitored and the chuck temperature is adjusted based on the calibration results to maintain a constant metal temperature. In the second method, temperature sensors are fabricated on the chip and then the sensors are used to monitor the chip temperature directly. The chuck temperature is then adjusted as needed.

Containerless Processing in Reduced Gravity Using the TEMPUS Facility

Containerless processing provides a high purity environment for the study of high-temperature, very reactive materials. It is an important method which provides access to the metastable state of an undercooled melt. In the absence of container walls, the nucleation rate is greatly reduced and undercooling up to (Tm-Tn)/Tm approx. 0.2 can be obtained, where Tm and Tn are the melting and nucleation temperatures, respectively. Electromagnetic levitation represents a method particularly well-suited for the study of metallic melts. The TEMPUS facility is a research instrument designed to perform electromagnetic levitation studies in reduced gravity. It provides temperatures up to 2600 C, levitation of several grams of material and access to the undercooled state for an extended period of time (up to hours).

Corrosion resistive materials, systems, and methods of forming and using the materials and systems

A method to reduce corrosion rates of materials at high temperatures may include heating a mixture and applying the heated mixture to a material to be rendered thermodynamically noble. The mixture may include carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and the material rendered thermodynamically noble may include copper or other material having similar physical properties. The copper or other similar material may be applied to a structural material and provide a surface interfacing with the mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide to prevent corrosion of the structural material. In some cases, the structural material may form a heat exchanger defining passageways for a working fluid of a power system and/or may form other passageways of the power system. The copper may be applied to the passageways as a protective coating and then made thermodynamically noble at high temperatures after interactions with the mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
