Effect Laws of Different Factors on Levitation Characteristics of High-T{sub c} Superconducting Maglev System with Numerical Solutions

The interaction between the high-temperature superconducting (HTS) bulk and permanent magnet guideway (PMG) has been a topic among the existing HTS magnetic levitation systems. Up to now, the theories about the electromagnetic and force characteristics have been relatively consummated. Here, using the finite element model by COMSOL Multiphysics 5.3a, we investigated the impact of the intrinsic and external factors on the levitation characteristics of HTS maglev systems, the application laws are concluded. Factors including the critical current density and geometric dimensions of the bulk superconductor, as well as the moving velocity, are discussed. The effects of the multiple back and forth movements are also analyzed. By comparing calculation results of the distributions of the induced current and the levitation force of the bulk superconductor, we can clearly confirm the effect laws of various factors on the electromagnetic characteristics and levitation force. These observations support the physical parameters that are difficult to be tested by experiments. And they also have a significant contribution to the experimental condition selections and optimization of the high-temperature superconducting magnetic levitation.

High total bilirubin level is a significant risk factor for severe neutropenia in patients receiving irinotecan-based chemotherapy

Irinotecan is effective for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) and advanced pancreatic cancer (aPC). However, these treatments are often limited due to the incidence of severe neutropenia. We identified risk factors for severe neutropenia in patients with mCRC or aPC, receiving irinotecan-based chemotherapy regimens. The study selected 104 patients (mCRC: 53 and aPC: 51) who received irinotecan-based chemotherapy between January 2014 and May 2018 and who were included in the present study. The initial dose of irinotecan was 150 mg/m{sup 2} in all patients, and patients with a lower initial dose of irinotecan were excluded. Severe neutropenia (grade ≥ 3) occurred in 56 patients (53.8%). Multivariable Cox proportional hazards analysis indicated that modified FOLFIRINOX (mFOLFIRINOX) and serum total bilirubin (T-Bil) were significant risk factors for severe neutropenia. Moreover, with receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the cutoff for T-Bil was found to be 0.7 mg/dL. Among patients treated with mFOLFIRINOX therapy, the incidence of severe neutropenia was significantly higher in patients with high level of T-Bil (> 0.7 mg/dL) than in those without it (93.8% vs 55.0%, P = 0.006). A chemotherapy regimen (modified FOLFIRINOX therapy) and T-Bil > 0.7 mg/dL were significant risk factors for severe neutropenia in patients receiving 150 mg/m{sup 2} irinotecan.

Incremental nonnegative matrix factorization based on correlation and graph regularization for matrix completion

Matrix factorization is widely used in recommendation systems, text mining, face recognition and computer vision. As one of the most popular methods, nonnegative matrix factorization and its incremental variants have attracted much attention. The existing incremental algorithms are established based on the assumption of samples are independent and only update the new latent variable of weighting coefficient matrix when the new sample comes, which may lead to inferior solutions. To address this issue, we investigate a novel incremental nonnegative matrix factorization algorithm based on correlation and graph regularizer (ICGNMF). The correlation is mainly used for finding out those correlated rows to be updated, that is, we assume that samples are dependent on each other. We derive the updating rules for ICGNMF by considering the correlation. We also present tests on widely used image datasets, and show ICGNMF reduces the error by comparing other methods.

Emergency department overcrowding and its associated factors at HARME medical emergency center in Eastern Ethiopia

Introduction: Emergency department (ED) overcrowding has become a significant concern as it can lead to compromised patient care in emergency settings. Various tools have been used to evaluate overcrowding in ED. However, there is a lack of data regarding this issue in resource-limited countries, including Ethiopia. This study aimed to validate NEDOCS, assess level of ED overcrowding and identify associated factors at HARME Medical Emergency Center, located in Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Harar, Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the HARME Medical Emergency Center, Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, involving a total of 899 patients during 120 sampling intervals. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC) was calculated to evaluate the agreement between objective and subjective assessments of ED overcrowding. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was employed to identify factors associated with ED overcrowding and statistically significant association was declared using 95% confidence level and a p-value < 0.05. Results: The interrater agreement showed a strong correlation with a Cohen's kappa (κ) of 0.80. The National Emergency Department Overcrowding Study Score demonstrated a strong association with subjective assessments from residents and case team nurses, with an AUC of 0.81 and 0.79, respectively. According to residents' perceptions, ED were considered overcrowded 65.8% of the time. Factors significantly associated with ED overcrowding included waiting time for triage (AOR: 2.24; 95% CI: 1.54–3.27), working time (AOR: 2.23; 95% CI: 1.52–3.26), length of stay (AOR: 2.40; 95% CI: 1.27–4.54), saturation level (AOR: 2.35; 95% CI: 1.31–4.20), chronic illness (AOR: 2.19; 95% CI: 1.37–3.53), and abnormal pulse rate (AOR: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.06–2.16). Conclusion: The study revealed that ED were overcrowded approximately two-thirds of the time.

The impact of wind, solar, and other factors on the decline in wholesale power prices in the United States

Across multiple organized wholesale power markets in the United States, annual average prices declined by 19–64 dollars per MWh between 2008 and 2017 while retirements of thermal power plants accelerated. Several prominent changes over the last decade are often discussed as contributors to this decline in prices. These include growth in wind and solar, a reduction in the price of natural gas, and weakened load growth. Here we construct a fundamental supply curve model for each of seven organized wholesale market regions and use counterfactual simulations to assess the degree to which wind and solar—among other factors—have influenced wholesale electricity prices. We find that growth in wind and solar since 2008 reduced average annual wholesale electricity prices by less than 3 dollars per MWh. In contrast the decline in natural gas prices reduced wholesale prices by 7–53 dollars per MWh, depending on the region. This suggests that recent thermal-plant retirements in the U.S. are primarily due to low natural gas prices, not growth in wind and solar. Fully isolating the impact of individual factors, however, is limited by non-linear interactions between factors.

Effects of PQ's cytotoxicity on secretory vesicles in astroglia: Expression alternation of secretogranin II and its potential interaction with intracellular factors

Highlights: • PQ upregulated SCG2 expression and altered its subcellular location in astroglia. • SCG2 knockdown dysregulated GS and IL-6 expressions on RNA and protein levels. • SCG2-positive LDCVs were partially involved in trafficking of IL-6 but not GS. • SCG2 may contribute to PQ toxicology by regulating neurotransmitters and cytokines. It has been extensively characterized that paraquat (PQ) selectively targets to the substantia nigra and exerts neurotoxic actions on dopaminergic neurons. However, a little knowledge is available about astroglia in PQ exposure, especially its complex secretory machinery. To explore this point, we built up a PQ-induced model in cultural U118 astrocyte. Since the granin family is considered as a master regulator of cargo sorting and large dense core vesicles (LDCVs) biogenesis in the regulated secretory pathway of nervous and neuroendocrine cells, the current study focused on one member, secretogranin II (SCG2) and investigated its alternation and potential relationship with other astrocyte-derived factors under PQ insult. We found that PQ upregulated SCG2 expression on both RNA and protein levels and stimulated the mRNA expression of neurotrophic factors, cytokines and glutamine synthetase (GS) simultaneously. RNAi knockdown of SCG2 did not rescue the cell cycle arrest induced by PQ but affected expressions of IL-6 and GS on mRNA and protein levels. Further studies on subcellular location showed that SCG2-positive secretory granules were partially colocalized with IL-6 but not GS in PQ exposure astrocyte. Taken together, our findings indicate that the expression alternation of SCG2 under astroglial activation by PQ may be necessary compensation for cargo sorting and LDCV biogenesis. The involvement of the IL-6 and GS suggests that the SCG2 may potentially regulate inflammatory factors and excitatory neurotransmitter to the cytotoxicity of PQ on astroglia.

Decursin and decursinol angelate improve wound healing by upregulating transcription of genes encoding extracellular matrix remodeling proteins, inflammatory cytokines, and growth factors in human keratinocytes

Highlights: • Decursin and decursinol angelate can improve wound healing below proper concentration. • The treatment of these compounds upregulates the genes of extracellular matrix remodeling proteins for wound healing. • Also, these compounds upregulate the genes of inflammatory cytokines, and growth factors. • The genes upregulated by decursin are different by decursinol angelate even though their structure is very similar. The coumarins decursin and decursinol angelate, which are found in Angelica gigas Nakai, have a variety of biological functions. Here, we show that treatment with these compounds improves wound healing by HaCaT human keratinocytes. Wound healing was increased by treatment with up to a threshold concentration of decursin, decursinol angelate, a mixture of both, and a nano-emulsion of these compounds, but inhibited by treatment with higher concentrations. Immunoblotting and fluorescence imaging of cells expressing an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) biosensor demonstrated that these compounds did not stimulate wound healing by inducing EGFR phosphorylation. Rather, transcriptional analysis revealed that decursin and decursinol angelate improved wound healing by upregulating the expression of genes encoding extracellular matrix remodeling proteins, inflammatory cytokines, and growth factors.

Myotube-derived factor promotes oligodendrocyte precursor cell proliferation

Highlights: • Myotube-derived factors promote proliferation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs). • Myotube-derived factors do not promote OPC migration and differentiation. • Candidate genes which promote OPC proliferation were identified by RNA sequence analysis. • Molecules released by myotubes may be involved in OPC proliferation. Muscle cells secrete numerous molecules that function as endocrine hormones and regulate the functions of distant organs. Myelination in the central nervous system (CNS) is regulated by peripheral hormones. However, the effects of muscle-derived molecules on myelination have not been sufficiently analyzed. In this study, we show that muscle-releasing factors promote proliferation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs), which is an element of myelination process. Supernatants of mouse myotube cultures stimulated bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation into mouse OPCs. Mouse myotube supernatants did not enhance mouse OPC transmigration and myelin basic protein (MBP) expression. RNA sequencing identified candidate genes with hormonal functions that were expressed in mouse myotubes. These data support the possibility that hormonal molecules secreted by myotubes contribute to OPC proliferation and myelination.

MiR-150 predicts survival in patients with sepsis and inhibits LPS-induced inflammatory factors and apoptosis by targeting NF-κB1 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells

Highlights: • Plasma miR-150 level is reduced in patients with sepsis. • Plasma miR-150 has a diagnostic and prognostic value in septic patients. • MiR-150 protects HUVECs from LPS-induced inflammatory injury. • NF-κB1 is a direct target of miR-150. MiR-150 is involved into some pathological processes, such as tumorigenesis and autoimmune diseases. However, little is known about the involvement of miR-150 in human sepsis. In this study, plasma miR-150 level had a diagnostic and independent prognostic value in patients with sepsis, and negatively correlated with renal dysfunction and 28-day survival as well as plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). MiR-150 expression was also significantly decreased in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and C57BL/6 mice with sepsis after lipopolysaccharides (LPS) treatment. In-vitro, miR-150 over-expression protected HUVECs from LPS-induced apoptosis and the expressions of nuclear factor-κB1 (NF-κB1), IL-6, TNF-α, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and E-selectin. Furthermore, NF-κB1 was identified as a direct target of miR-150. Restored NF-κB1 expression antagonized the protective effects of miR-150, while suppression of NF-κB1 enhanced these protective effects. Our findings indicate miR-150 predicts survival in patients with sepsis and inhibits LPS-induced inflammatory factors and apoptosis by targeting NF-κB1 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Thus, miR-150 may be a useful biomarker or target in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of patients with sepsis.

The role of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A-1 (eIF5A-1) gene in HPV 16 E6 induces cell growth in human cervical squamous carcinoma cells

Highlights: • HPV 16 E6 and eIF5A-1 gene were highly expressed in the vast majority of cervical tumor tissues. • HPV 16 E6 gene could increase the expression of eIF5A-1 and induce the apoptosis of C33a and SiHa cells. • eIF5A-1 gene could effectively increase viability, migrated and cell proliferation of cervical squamous carcinoma cell line (C33a and SiHa). • Silencing the eIF5A-1 gene or blocking the DOHH could induce the apoptosis of HPV 16 E6-infected cervical carcinoma cells. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is considered as the major risk factor for the development and progression of cervical cancer. The high expression of HPV 16 E6 may be the causative factor for induction and maintenance of the transformed phenotype. These oncoproteins would interact with several intracellular proteins, such as eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A-1 (eIF5A-1) that is essential for proliferation of eukaryotic cells. Our study explored the expression level of HPV 16 E6 and eIF5A-1 in human cervical squamous carcinoma samples and the adjacent non-cancerous cervix samples. Both C33a cells and SiHa cells transfected with a vector encoding HPV 16 E6 resulted in increase of eIF5A-1 expression level and enhancement of viability, migration and proliferation of these cells, furthermore, these effects in both C33a cells and SiHa cells could be abrogated by treatment with eIF5A-1 small-interfering RNA (siRNA) or the specific inhibitors ciclopirox (CPX) that was used to inhibit the function of eIF5A-1 via blocking the main enzymes deoxyhypusine hydroxylase (DOHH). Our results support that the silencing the eIF5A-1 gene or blocking the DOHH could induce the apoptosis of HPV 16 E6-infected cervical carcinoma cells. Thus might provide a new approach to preventing and treating cervical cancer.

Severity factor kinetic model as a strategic parameter of hydrothermal processing (steam explosion and liquid hot water) for biomass fractionation under biorefinery concept

Hydrothermal processes are an attractive clean technology and cost-effective engineering platform for bio-refineries based in the conversion of biomass to biofuels and high-value bioproducts under the basis of sustainability and circular bioeconomy. The deep and detailed knowledge of the structural changes by the severity of biomasses hydrothermal fractionation is scientifically and technological needed in order to improve processes effectiveness, reactors designs, and industrial application of the multi-scale target compounds obtained by stream explosion and liquid hot water systems. The concept of the severity factor [log 10 (R 0 )] established > 30 years ago, continue to be a useful index that can provide a simple description of the relationship between the operational conditions for biomass fractionation in second generation of biorefineries. Furthermore, this review develops a deep explanation of the hydrothermal severity factor based in lignocellulosic biomass fractionation with emphasis in research advances, pretreatment operations and the applications of severity factor kinetic model.

Concentrations of organophosphate flame retardants and plasticizers in urine from young children in Queensland, Australia and associations with environmental and behavioural factors

Highlights: • Eight OPFRs and eleven metabolites were measured in the urine of Australian kids. • Age was positively associated with BBOEP and negatively associated with BCIPP. • Mouthing activities were associated with higher concentrations of TBOEP, and TPHP. • Children living with window AC units had higher concentrations of BCIPHIPP and DBP. In recent years, the production and usage volumes of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) has increased substantially. Certain OPFRs are suspected reproductive toxins, carcinogenic, and neurotoxic. Insufficient information is available on human exposure pathways to these chemicals, particularly in Australia. We aim to assess the association between OPFR concentrations in the urine of children to environmental and behavioural risk factors. Concentrations of eight OPFRs and eleven metabolites were measured in the urine of 51 children, aged 3–29 months, in Southeast Queensland, Australia and compared to their behavioural and environmental risk factor data obtained by an online questionnaire. Of the 11 OPFR metabolites analysed, 55% were frequently detected in the majority (> 80%) of samples. The most frequently detected metabolite was bis(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate (BDCIPP) (detected in 100% of samples), followed by 1-hydroxy-2-propyl bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPHIPP) (96%), diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) (94%) and bis(1-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (BCIPP) (86%). In multivariable modelling, age was positively associated with concentrations of bis(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (BBOEP) and negatively associated with concentrations of BCIPP and BCIPHIPP. Other non-age related factors, including vacuuming frequency, hand-washing frequency and presence and number of some electrical appliances in the home were also associated with concentrations of OPFR metabolites.

Environmental risk factors associated with low birth weight: The case study of the Haifa Bay Area in Israel

Highlights: • Environmental factors affecting low birth weight (LBW) rate are investigated. • Analysis is conducted by alternative techniques of geo-statistical analysis. • Proximity to petrochemical industries is found to increase LBW rate. • Seashore proximity and elevation above the sea level reduce the LBW rate. • We attribute the latter to climate-moderating effect of elevated seashore locations. Low birth weight (LBW) is known to be associated with infant mortality and postnatal health complications. Previous studies revealed strong relationships between LBW rate and several socio-demographic factors, including ethnicity, maternal age, and family income. However, studies of association between LBW rate and environmental risk factors remain infrequent.

The association between exposure to environmental factors and the occurrence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A population-based retrospective cohort study

Highlights: • We found a certain north-south pattern for the risk of occurrence of ADHD. • These clusters could be related to some of the environmental variables. • In particular, an increased risk of occurrence of ADHD was found. • Living less than 100 m from an agricultural area or a residential Street. • Living less than 300 m from a motorway/dual carriageway or an industrial estate. A number of factors contribute to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and although they are not fully known, the occurrence of ADHD seems to be a consequence of an interaction between multiple genetic and environmental factors. However, apart from pesticides, the evidence is inadequate and inconsistent as it differs not only in the population and time period analysed, but also in the type of study, the control of the confounding variables and the statistical methods used. In the latter case, the studies also differ in the adjustment of spatial and temporal variability. Our objective here, is to provide evidence on an association between environmental factors and ADHD.

Factors influencing mode choice of adults with travel-limiting disability

Introduction: Despite the plethora of research devoted to analyzing the impact of disability on travel behavior, not enough studies have investigated the varying impact of social and environmental factors on the mode choice of people with disabilities that restrict their ability to use transportation modes efficiently. This research gap can be addressed by investigating the factors influencing the mode choice behavior of people with travel-limiting disabilities, which can inform the development of accessible and sustainable transportation systems. Additionally, such studies can provide insights into the social and economic barriers faced by this population group, which can help policymakers to promote social inclusion and equity. Method: This study utilized a Random Parameters Logit model to identify the individual, trip, and environmental factors that influence mode selection among people with travel-limiting disabilities. Here, using the 2017 National Household Travel Survey data for New York State, which included information on respondents with travel-limiting disabilities, the analysis focused on a sample of 8,016 people. In addition, climate data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were integrated as additional explanatory variables in the modeling process. Results: The results revealed that people with disabilities may be inclined to travel longer distances walking in the absence of suitable accommodation facilities for other transportation modes. Furthermore, people were less inclined to walk during summer and winter, indicating a need to consider weather conditions as a significant determinant of mode choice. Moreover, low-income people with disabilities were more likely to rely on public transport or walking. Conclusion: Based on this study’s findings, transportation agencies could design infrastructure and plan for future expansions that is more inclusive and accessible, thus catering to the mobility needs of people with travel-limiting disabilities.

Dose conversion factors for absorbed dose in a mobile phone to absorbed dose in critical organs in an anthropomorphic phantom for emergency dosimetry applications: OSL and TL experimental results, and Monte Carlo simulations

Here, an anthropomorphic phantom was equipped with three smartphones and irradiated in five separate exposure geometries in air using a 137 Cs source. The phantom was fitted internally with thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD-700 chips) to measure the absorbed dose to the individual organs, while the absorbed doses in the phones were evaluated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) from the phones’ surface mount resistors (SMRs), along with reference dosimeters, namely Luxel OSL films and TLD-700 chips. The results indicate a strong dependence on the phone location with respect to the source due to shielding and scattering from the body. Dose conversion factors were calculated for several plausible exposure scenarios in order to correlate the absorbed doses measured in the phones to the average body dose received by the phantom. The measured conversion factors were compared with calculated factors using MCNP6.2 Monte Carlo simulations and an ADAM voxel phantom. Experiments were conducted to assess how the phone orientation and angle impacts the dose received by the phone components. The overall results indicate that the doses measured can vary significantly depending upon exposure geometry (including phone position and angle). However, in rotational irradiation symmetry, the phone doses lead to an over-estimate of the average whole-body dose by an average of ~10%, independent of the phone locations tested in this study. This result, if confirmed in future studies, may be acceptable for triage.

Factors influencing recent trends in retail electricity prices in the United States

This study analyzes the primary drivers of recent state-level trends in U.S. retail electricity prices. We summarize pricing trends, explore descriptive relationships, and employ regression models to quantify the influence of various factors. Although the recent national rise in retail prices has largely tracked inflation, state-level trends vary widely. We identify a number of factors that explain trends in subsets of states. States with the greatest price increases typically exhibited shrinking customer loads—partially linked to growth in net metered behind-the-meter solar—and had renewables portfolio standards (RPS) in concert with relatively costly incremental renewable energy supplies. By contrast, recent utility-scale wind and solar deployment that occurred outside RPS programs (but that benefited from tax incentives) had no discernible impact on increased retail prices. Hurricanes, storms and wildfires also contributed to sizable price increases in some states, most notably in California, where wildfire risk mitigation and liability insurance were major cost drivers. Fluctuations in natural gas prices—particularly following the onset of the Ukraine-Russia war—further contributed to sharp price increases through 2022–2023 in many states, with moderation in 2024. The relative influence of these factors varies across states and over time, and relationships may change in the future. Nonetheless, the findings underscore the diverse set of price determinants and highlight the need for continued research to inform effective policy and ensure customer affordability.
