Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between National Energy Technology Laboratory and The Pennsylvania State University (Final Report)

The goal of this research was to investigate the production of carbon products from methane using carbon allotrope seeds. If successful, this would have eliminated the need for a metal catalyst and separation of said catalyst from the carbon product. There was also interest in alternate energy input technologies that could drive this reaction, in particular microwave irradiation. NETL was to provide the expertise and facilities to investigate the potential of microwave irradiation to aid in the conversion process. Unfortunately, protocols put in place to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic precluded on-site research by PSU scientists and made it impossible to execute the research outlined in this CRADA.

Project Task Statement 2 to Umbrella Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between National Energy Technology Laboratory and Ramaco Carbon [Abstract]

NETL and Ramaco will collaborate to characterize domestic coal, beneficiated coal, and coal byproducts to evaluate these materials for rare earth element (REE) content and ease of extraction. Ramaco will provide samples of coal, beneficiated coal, and coal byproducts to NETL, as well as provide research expertise on coal extraction and processing. NETL will characterize these feedstocks using the chemical/physical methods being utilized in its research laboratories. The objectives of this project are: identify promising coal-related REE reserves by testing and analysis of core samples from coal bearing formations; provide insights and expertise into opportunities for the extraction of REEs and other value-added products from domestic coal; and collect data that will be used to create quantitative modeling tools for predicting the likelihood of successful prospecting for REEs in coal, beneficiated and processed coal, and related geologic formation.

Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between National Energy Technology Laboratory and OxEon Energy LLC (Abstract)

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) will collaborate with OxEon Energy LLC (OxEon) to apply NETL’s patented single step electrode infiltration technique on OxEon solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) for Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft applications below one megawatt. The expanded application of the OxEon solid oxide cell technology on eVTOL aircraft seeks to demonstrate a high performance, durable SOFC system that will produce more electricity per weight based on possible operation on ammonia as fuel. NETL’s single-step electrode infiltration technique addresses these challenges by introducing a highly active nanocatalyst material into the SOFC electrode microstructure to improving cell performance, longevity, and fuel flexibility. Specifically for this project, OxEon will incorporate NETL’s technology to generate a small stack of cells (1 kW output) to demonstrate a fuel flexible system at a relevant scale. NETL will apply its infiltration technology to cells supplied by OxEon, test the effectiveness of the infiltration internally at NETL based on performance in hydrogen, and then supply infiltrated cells to OxEon and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for independent confirmation and for the 1 kW stack test.

Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between National Energy Technology Laboratory and Gas Technology Institute (Abstract)

Hydrogen has the potential to play an important role in decarbonizing energy-intensive sectors, and credible and open-source protocols are needed to vet the environmental credibility of a specific production pathway, given the variability even among the same technologies. Stakeholders and markets lack consistent, transparent, technical tools and protocols to assess the carbon intensity of hydrogen production at the asset level. Gas Technology Institute (GTI) and S&P Global Platts have launched the Open Hydrogen Initiative (OHI), a new collaboration focused on brining industry within the hydrogen marketplace together to provide further transparency into the environmental greenhouse gas (GHG) impact of hydrogen production. As part of this initiative, GTI has invited NETL to participate in the effort because of NETL’s deep expertise and capabilities in Life Cycle Analysis. Therefore, NETL is joining forces with the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) to build a measurement tool, accompanying protocols, and confidence score of the quality of the measurement. This CRADA effort provides the technical research collaboration support with GTI that will be used in the broader Open Hydrogen Initiative that can provide stakeholders the technical tools and protocols to decarbonize energyintensive sectors.

3D Reality Energy Modeling Software

The team will combine Bentley Systems’ ContextCapture and extend Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s building energy modeling capabilities in order to create digital twins of buildings that allow simulation-informed improvement for energy efficiency and demand response in the design and operation of the built environment. Bentley Systems’ ContextCapture software processes data from 3D laser scanning and photographs (through photogrammetry) to create a photorealistic, 3D mesh with a scale of individual objects to building to city-sized. This capability easily provides city-level visualization models and platforms where sustainable design alternatives are readily evaluated. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) serves the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) as one of three core laboratories developing building energy modeling tools EnergyPlus and OpenStudio. ORNL’s AutoBEM software (bit.ly/AutoBEM) can process imagery (satellite, aerial, and street level), LiDAR, cartographic layers, tax assessor’s data, and other data sources to extract building footprints, height, window-to-wall ratio, building type, vintage, and other building properties. AutoBEM has created 178,368 building energy models that were empirically validated with 15-minute whole-building electrical data from a utility.

Greater Toledo Community Foundation Sustainable Communities Educational Initiative (Final Technical Report)

The Greater Toledo Community Foundation’s (GTCF) Sustainable Communities Educational Initiative leveraged the two recently constructed Overland Solar Arrays to launch a diverse collection of educational activities designed to promote the intersection between workforce development, renewable energy and community activism to showcase emerging avenues for greater prosperity in communities that have experienced historic disinvestment. In addition to educational programming focused on employment in the clean energy and advanced manufacturing fields, the project also activated storytelling approaches to explain sustainable energy’s role in philanthropy, grantmaking and resident-led neighborhood enhancements.

Energy conversion research and development with diminiodes

Diminiodes are variable-gap cesium diodes with plane miniature guarded electrodes. These converters allow thermionic evaluations of tiny pieces of rare solids. In addition to smallness, diminiode advantages comprise simplicity, precision, fabrication ease, parts interchangeability, cleanliness, full instrumentation, direct calibration, ruggedness, and economy. Diminiodes with computerized thermionic performance mapping make electrode screening programs practical.

Energy-conversion research and development with diminiodes

Diminiodes are variable-gap cesium diodes with plane emitters and guarded collectors a few millimeters in diameter. This miniaturization allows the electrodes to be made of little pieces of rare materials like single crystals of unusual metals or metallides. In addition to smallness, diminiode advantages include simplicity, precision, fabrication ease, parts interchangeability, cleanliness, full instrumentation, ruggedness, and economy. The diminiode design also stresses effective, economical use with computers that control, collect, and correlate thermionic current and voltage data. Such diminiode tests completed recently for ultrapure metal electrodes produced relatively low, sharply defined ultimate power outputs.
