Optimized low-depth quantum circuits for molecular electronic structure using a separable-pair approximation

We present a classically tractable model that leads to optimized low-depth quantum circuits leveraging separable-pair approximations. The obtained circuits are well suited as a baseline circuit for emerging quantum hardware and can, in the long term, provide significantly improved initial states for quantum algorithms. The associated wave functions can be represented with linear memory requirement, which allows classical optimization of the circuits and naturally defines a minimum benchmark for quantum algorithms. In this work we employ directly determined pair-natural orbitals within a basis-set-free approach. This leads to accurate representation of the one- and many-body parts for weakly correlated systems and we explicitly illustrate how the model can be integrated into other quantum algorithms for stronger correlated systems.

Ab initio description of the Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ electronic structure

Bi-based cuprate superconductors are important materials for both fundamental research and applications. As in other cuprates, the superconducting phase in the Bi compounds lies close to an antiferromagnetic phase. Here, our density functional theory calculations based on the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed exchange correlation functional in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ reveal the persistence of magnetic moments on the copper ions for oxygen concentrations ranging from the pristine phase to the optimally hole-doped compound. We also find the existence of ferrimagnetic solutions in the heavily doped compounds, which are expected to suppress superconductivity.

Electronic structure and topology across T c in the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2

Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 is a magnetic Weyl semimetal, in which ferromagnetic ordering at 177 K is predicted to stabilize Weyl points. We perform temperature and spatial dependent angle--resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements through the Curie temperature (T c ), which show large band shifts and renormalization concomitant with the onset of magnetism. We argue that Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 evolves from a Mott ferromagnet below T c to a correlated metallic state above T c . To understand the magnetism, we derive a tight-binding model of Co-3d x 2 -y 2 orbitals on the kagome lattice. At the filling obtained by first-principles calculations, this model reproduces the ferromagnetic ground state, and results in the reduction of Coulomb interactions due to cluster effects. Using a disordered local moment simulation, we show how this reduced Hubbard U leads to a collapse of the bands across the magnetic transition, resulting in a correlated state which carries associated characteristic photoemission signatures that are distinct from those of a simple lifting of exchange splitting. Finally, the behavior of topology across T c is discussed in the context of this description of the magnetism.

Electronic structure of intrinsic defects in c -gallium nitride: Density functional theory study without the jellium approximation

Here, we report the first nonjellium, systematic, density functional theory (DFT) study of intrinsic and extrinsic defects and defect levels in zinc-blende (cubic) gallium nitride. We use the local moment counter charge (LMCC) method, the standard Perdew-Becke-Ernzerhoff (PBE) exchange-correlation potential, and two pseudopotentials, where the Ga 3$\textit{d}$ orbitals are either in the core ($d^0$) or explicitly in the valence set ($d^{10}$). We studied 64, 216, 512, and 1000 atom supercells, and demonstrated convergence to the infinite limit, crucial for delineating deep from shallow states near band edges, and for demonstrating the elimination of finite cell-size errors. Contrary to common claims, we find that exact exchange is not required to obtain defect levels across the experimental band gap. As was true in silicon, silicon carbide, and gallium arsenide, the extremal LMCC defect levels of the aggregate of defects yield an effective LMCC defect band gap that is within 10% of the experimental gap (3.3 eV) for both pseudopotentials. We demonstrate that the gallium vacancy is more complicated than previously reported. There is dramatic metastability–a nearest-neighbor nitrogen atom shifts into the gallium site, forming an antisite, nitrogen vacancy pair, which is more stable than the simple vacancy for positive charge states. Our assessment of the $d^0$ and $d^{10}$ pseudopotentials yields minimal differences in defect structures and defect levels. The better agreement of the $d^0$ lattice constant with experiment suggests that the more computationally economical $d^0$ pseudopotentials are sufficient to achieve the fidelity possible within the physical accuracy of DFT, and thereby enable calculations in larger supercells necessary to demonstrate convergence with respect to finite size supercell errors.

Electronic structure and optical properties of halide double perovskites from a Wannier-localized optimally-tuned screened range-separated hybrid functional

Halide double perovskites are a chemically diverse and growing class of compound semiconductors that are promising for optoelectronic applications. However, the prediction of their fundamental gaps and optical properties with density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio many-body perturbation theory has been a significant challenge. Recently, a nonempirical Wannier-localized optimally tuned screened range-separated hybrid (WOT-SRSH) functional has been shown to accurately produce the fundamental band gaps of a wide set of semiconductors and insulators, including lead halide perovskites. Here, in this study, we apply the WOT-SRSH functional to five halide double perovskites and compare the results with those obtained from other known functionals and previous GW calculations. We also use the approach as a starting point for GW calculations and we compute the band structures and optical absorption spectrum for Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 , using both time-dependent DFT and the GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation approach. We show that the WOT-SRSH functional leads to accurate fundamental and optical band gaps, as well as optical absorption spectra, consistent with spectroscopic measurements, thereby establishing WOT-SRSH as a viable method for the accurate prediction of optoelectronic properties of halide double perovskites.
