Plutonium and poetry: Where Trinity and Oppenheimer's reading habits met Literary inspirations, correcting misinterpretation of his famous quote

The Lab’s first director, J. Robert Oppenheimer, was a man of sonnets and scientific synthesis. Oppenheimer’s work at Los Alamos was defined not only by physics and administrative skill, but also by a life philosophy inspired, in part, by literature. The Trinity test, which took place 76 years ago on July 16th in the New Mexico desert, epitomizes this. Known as one of the greatest scientific achievements ever, the successful detonation of the world’s first nuclear weapon marked the dawn of the Atomic Age. Created in just 27, albeit harrowing, months, Oppenheimer and his team at the Los Alamos Lab worked nonstop on this clandestine effort to help end World War II. As he had done throughout his life, Oppenheimer continued to foster his love of literature during the Manhattan Project. Two of his influences were John Donne and the Hindu scripture Bhagavad-Gita. Oppenheimer recalled both during the Trinity test.

Fission to Fusion: An Island Goes Missing

Hollywood actor Reed Hadley walked the decks of the USS Estes with the practiced ease characteristic of his profession. Stopping periodically to relight his pipe, Hadley narrated an AEC film depicting the final hours and minutes leading up to the detonation of Mike, the world’s first thermonuclear bomb. Hadley’s smooth camera presence contrasted sharply with those of the scientists and technicians he interviewed, particularly Alvin Graves, who came across wooden and condescending. Just after Hadley put on his dark goggles to prevent flash blindness, Mike exploded with a force of 10.4 megatons, completely vaporizing the entire ground zero island of Elugelab. The film made one thing clear – Los Alamos scientists could build a thermonuclear bomb, but they could not act.

Pipeline Structural Stability Under Nuclear Blast Pressure Loading

This report documents a set of simplified models to predict pipeline collapse under nuclear pressure loading. After a review of pipeline design literature, a set of simple expressions have been selected to represent an approximation of the threshold pressure for failure from cross- sectional yielding, cross-section buckling, and longitudinal buckling. These expressions provide a first-order approximation on load levels needed to achieve collapse. As a demonstration, the collapse pressure for a set of representative pipelines are calculated. Estimated pressure fields are also computed for a set of nuclear detonations, providing estimates of the ground range limit for pipeline collapse.

Instantaneous Three-Dimensional Temperature Measurements via Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy with Structured Light

Detonations and flames are characterized by three-dimensional (3D) temperature fields, yet state-of- the-art temperature measurement techniques yield information at a point or along a line. The goal of the research documented here was to combine ultrafast laser spectroscopy and structured illumination to deliver an unprecedented measurement capability—three-dimensional, instantaneous temperature measurements in a gas-phase volume. To achieve this objective, different parts of the proposed technique were developed and tested independently. Structured illumination was used to image particulate matter (soot) in a turbulent flame at multiple planes using a single laser pulse and a single camera. Emission spectroscopy with structured detection was demonstrated for emission- based measurements of explosives with enhance dimensionality. Finally, an instrument for multi- planar laser-based temperature measurement technique was developed. Structured illumination techniques will continue to be developed for multi-dimensional and multi-parameter measurements. These new measurement capabilities will be important for heat transfer and fluid dynamic research areas.

A Section 110 Evaluation of Three Sites Associated with the Grable Test, Area 5, Nevada National Security Site, Nye County, Nevada

This report presents the results of a Section 110 recordation of the 280mm Atomic Gun emplacement and command post (CP) (26NY16244), an associated Flash Observation Point that was used to refine the gun’s firing range (26NY16243), and troop trenches used for Exercise Desert Rock V (26NY16242). All three of these resources are directly associated with the Grable test, a specific test in the Upshot-Knothole series of aboveground nuclear detonations. The Grable test occurred at 8:30 a.m. on May 25, 1953, in Area 5 of the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Desert Research Institute (DRI) recommends 26NY16244 and 26NY16242 eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under a combination of the Secretary of the Interior’s Significance Criteria A and D at the national level of significance and related to the era of Nuclear Testing and the Cold War. All three of these resources are recommended as contributing elements to the Frenchman Flat Historic District (SHPO Resource No. D204).

Atomic tunes: The intersection of Lab science and popular music from 1945-1962 How American music was influenced by nuclear science

The American public realized the magnitude at which the atom’s power could be harnessed following the detonation of Little Boy and Fat Man in August 1945. World War II ended weeks later, but the Atomic Age had just begun. Society contextualized nuclear science into pop culture as a way of processing the era’s immense technological progress. Music, among other media, became a speculative arena for expressing the awe and angst evoked by splitting the atom.

R-CERT Project Analysis Report

The R-CERT project aims to determine if PBX 9501 will experience a deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) while in a high pressure environment. Combined efforts in design and analysis between multiple groups at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) were required to finalize the test design. The proposed design of the case assembly (i.e. the pressure vessel that would contain the high explosive) was analyzed and iteratively modified until modeling efforts predicted the case would maintain pressure up to 5000 psi under quasi-static conditions. To prevent the case from being excessively robust beyond its design requirement, grooves were added to the case geometry with depths and radii of 4 mm, thus weakening the case while maintaining much of the mass of the proposed design.

CORRTEX Analysis Techniques

Continuous Reflectometry for Radius versus Time Experiments, or CORRTEX, is a diagnostic that was developed during nuclear testing to measure the distance at which rock walls were disrupted by an explosive device as a function of the time at which disruption occurred. Distances recorded are dynamic measurements of cable length as the shockwaves from an explosive event crush the experiment cables, reducing their usable length. Applications of the CORRTEX diagnostic have been expanded in recent times to include instrumentation of the explosive device itself, to record phenomena such as the speed of the detonation wave in the explosive charge and the crushing or disassembly of material in the charge housing. The diagnostic has likewise been used to monitor explosive performance in rock blasting and oil well hole-clearing activities.

Analysis of Experimental Shock Propagation through a Diverse Set of Geometric Cavities Embedded in Lab-Scale Polymer Cubes

Experiments were designed and conducted to investigate the impact that geometric cavities have on the transfer of energy from an embedded explosion to the surface of the physical domain. The experimental domains were fabricated as 3-inch polymer cubes, with varying cavity geometries centered in the cubes. The energy transfer, represented as a shock wave, was generated by the detonation of an exploding bridgewire at the center of the cavity. The shock propagation was tracked by schlieren imaging through the optically accessible polymer. The magnitude of energy transferred to the surface was recorded by an array of pressure sensors. A minimum of five experimental runs were conducted for each cavity geometry and statistical results were developed and compared. Results demonstrated the decoupling effect that geometric cavities produce on the energy field at the surface.

Effects of Intrusive Confining Units on Groundwater Flow at Pahute Mesa, Nevada National Security Site

Geological, geophysical, hydrogeological, and hydrological evidence indicates that feeder dikes to lava flows play a role as confining units in the groundwater flow system underlying the Pahute Mesa area of underground nuclear testing at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Of geological significance, the Pahute Mesa testing area is largely situated within the Silent Canyon caldera, which includes both tuffs and lavas that were fed by (and are connected to) intrusive rock units such as feeder dikes prior to and during volcanic eruptions (Orkild et al., 1968; Byers et al., 1976). Groundwater modeling results presented in this report support extension of “pool-dam” and “breach scenario” concepts presented in Jackson and Fenelon (2018) and Jackson et al. (2021) to low-permeability intrusive confining units (ICUs) such as feeder dikes that are expected to dissect and ring the caldera. As laterally extensive, steeply-dipping, and sub-parallel planar structures, ICUs can be expected to further compartmentalize groundwater flow in the volcanic aquifers systems at Pahute Mesa beyond the stratigraphically-defined tuff confining units (TCUs). ICUs provide an explanation for changes in water levels before and after the Cheshire test, detonated 2/14/76 (USDOE, 2015), and the unusually high horizontal gradient southwest of Cheshire. These ICU concepts are supported by groundwater modeling results presented in this report. The evidence and groundwater modeling results indicate that the downgradient extent of radionuclide contamination in some areas of Pahute Mesa could be overestimated by ignoring the confining effects of ICUs. On the other hand, contaminant extent could be underestimated by not considering transient flow effects and/or the re-equilibrated flow field caused by breaching of an ICU by an underground nuclear test.

2021 Results for Avian Monitoring of Inorganic and Organic Element Concentrations in Passerine Eggs and Nestlings Collected from Technical Area 16 Burn Grounds, Technical Area 36 Minie, and Technical Area 39 Point 6 at Los Alamos National Laboratory (Rev. 2)

In 2021, non-viable avian eggs and one nestling were opportunistically collected at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) near open detonation sites located at Technical Area (TA) 16 burn grounds and TA-36 Minie. Similar to previous years, nestboxes were monitored at TA-39 Point 6, however, no avian samples were available for opportunistic collection. Samples were evaluated for inorganic elements (mostly metals), dioxins, and furans. One ash-throated flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens) egg sample was collected from TA-16 burn grounds. One ash-throated flycatcher and one mountain bluebird (Sialia currucoides) egg sample and one deceased western bluebird (Sialia mexicana) nestling sample were collected from TA-36 Minie. Concentrations of inorganic elements observed in this study were compared with the regional statistical reference level (RSRL) which is the upper-level bounds of background concentrations (mean + three standard deviations = 99% confidence interval). Several inorganic elements were not detected in avian eggs. Most inorganic elements detected were below the RSRL and all were the lowest observable adverse effect level (LOAEL), when available. The nestling collected from TA-36 did not contain detectable concentrations of dioxin or furan congeners. These data suggest that inorganic and organic element concentrations in eggs and nestlings are not of ecological concern. More data are needed to make a robust assessment and to evaluate trends over time.

Operation Teapot

As part of Operation Teapot, reporter Joan Collin came to the Nevada Test Site in early May 1955 to narrate a Federal Civil Defense Administration motion picture film on the explosive and radioactive effects of a nuclear detonation on food supplies, houses, communication systems, and energy sources. After watching efforts to feed the many people involved in test site activities, Collin asked the question of how to mass feed people after a nuclear attack. She was one of the few persons perceptive enough to recognize the significance of this issue.

Methodology for Determining Impulse and Quasi-Static Pressure Loading for Design of 6-ft Inner Diameter Confinement Vessel

A brief study of the TNT-equivalence of PBX-9501 is presented herein utilizing a new basis via application of one-dimensional spherical (1DS) hydrocode models in a 6-ft ID confinement vessel geometry with no internal furniture. Specifically, TNT-equivalence herein is based upon two separate features: (1) matching the peak reflected specific impulse of PBX-9501 to TNT under detonation process, and (2) matching quasi-static peak gas pressure of PBX-9501 to TNT at steady-state.

Analysis of Transient Groundwater Flow Near the Cheshire Test at Pahute Mesa, Nevada National Security Site

This report focuses on analysis and determination of the causes of transient water levels measured between 1964 and 2017 near the Cheshire underground nuclear test, which was detonated on February 14, 1976 in Area 20 (USDOE, 2015) of the Pahute Mesa (PM) testing areas of the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) located in southern Nevada (Figure 1). Transient water levels near Cheshire indicate influences of a water-production well and yet-unexplained water level rise attributed to testing effects (Jackson and Fenelon, 2018; Jackson et al. 2021). Transient groundwater flow is relevant to the implementation of the hydrologic source term (HST), which prescribes the quantity and release rates of radionuclide source terms to be applied at individual test locations in assessment of regional-scale radionuclide transport (Carle and Tompson, 2021; Carle et al., 2021), as previously investigated for NNSS testing areas at PM (Pawloski et al., 2001), Frenchman Flat (Carle et al, 2007), Yucca Flat (Mcnab, 2009; Tompson, 2009), and Rainier Mesa (Carle, 2011; Tompson et al., 2011).
