Atomic-Layer-Deposited Aluminum Oxide Thin Films Probed with X-ray Scattering and Compared to Molecular Dynamics and Density Functional Theory Models

A better understanding of amorphous aluminum oxide’s structure and electronic properties is obtained through combined experimental and computational approaches. Grazing incidence X-ray scattering measurements were carried out on aluminum oxide thin films grown using thermal atomic layer deposition. The corresponding pair distribution functions (PDFs) showed structures similar to previously reported PDFs of solid-state amorphous alumina and molten alumina. Structural models based on crystalline alumina polymorphs (PDFgui) and amorphous alumina (molecular dynamics, MD) were examined for structural comparisons to the experimental PDF data. Smaller MD models were optimized and verified against larger models to allow for quantum chemical electronic structure calculations. The electronic structure of the amorphous alumina models yields additional insight into the band structure and electronic defects present in amorphous alumina that are not present in crystalline samples.

Coupling and Reactions of Lignols and New Lignin Monomers: A Density Functional Theory Study

This perspective summarizes and compares computational results for the thermodynamics of bond dissociation, coupling, and rearomatization for a number of noncanonical lignin monomer–lignol combinations that have been found to occur experimentally. The noncanonical lignin monomers discussed are tricin, caffeyl alcohol, 5-hydroxyconiferyl alcohol, and piceatannol. Among dimeric combinations, the results for bond dissociation are generally similar, but in cases for which trimers have been reported (tricin-lignol adducts), this value can be quite variable, with stereochemical and structural preferences. Among the adducts examined thus far, the energies associated with quinone methide formation and rearomatization are not dissimilar and would not impede subsequent polymerization. These fundamental studies may help to elucidate how lignin monomers are incorporated into the lignin polymer, provide leads for targeted genetic modification, and be of use in deconstruction for the production of commodity chemicals.

Modeling antiphase boundary energies of Ni 3 Al-based alloys using automated density functional theory and machine learning

Antiphase boundaries (APBs) are planar defects that play a critical role in strengthening Ni-based superalloys, and their sensitivity to alloy composition offers a flexible tuning parameter for alloy design. Here, we report a computational workflow to enable the development of sufficient data to train machine-learning (ML) models to automate the study of the effect of composition on the (111) APB energy in Ni 3 Al-based alloys. We employ ML to leverage this wealth of data and identify several physical properties that are used to build predictive models for the APB energy that achieve a cross-validation error of 0.033 J m –2 . We demonstrate the transferability of these models by predicting APB energies in commercial superalloys. Moreover, our use of physically motivated features such as the ordering energy and stoichiometry-based features opens the way to using existing materials properties databases to guide superalloy design strategies to maximize the APB energy.

Electromagnetic control of spin ordered Mn 3 qubits: a density functional study

[Mn 3 O(O 2 CMe)(dpd 3/2 )] 2 is composed of two monomers each of which contain three Mn atoms at the vertices of an equilateral triangle. A full analysis of the electronic and magnetic structure of the dimer shows that each Mn atom carries a local spin of S = 2 while other spin states are energetically much higher. This result suggests application for conventional as well as quantum tasks. A detailed analysis of the electronic and magnetic structure of the monomer, on the other hand, suggests that there are three spin states of S = 1, S = 3/2 and S = 2 per monomer which are energetically competitive. Additionally, we found that while monomer–monomer interactions are very weak, the coupling of monomers via covalent linkers affects both the magnetization and electronic energy levels of monomers. In particular, the isolated monomers prefer a ground state with local spin of S = 1 on Mn atoms and an antiferromagnetically ordered structure while the dimers possess a ground state with local spin of S = 2 on Mn atoms and a ferromagnetically ordered structure. The investigation of the polarizability of both monomer and dimer is examined for antiferromagnetically ordered structures which induces a high dipole moment of 0.08 (a.u.) and 0.16 (a.u.) for monomer and dimer, respectively. The energy of the antiferromagnetic structure is also high compared to other spin-electric molecules.

Investigation of N2 adsorption on Fe3O4(001) using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory

Reactions on iron oxide surfaces are prevalent in various chemical processes from heterogeneous catalysts to minerals. Nitrogen (N2) is known to dissociate on iron surfaces, a precursor for ammonia production in the Haber–Bosch process, where the dissociation of N2 is the limiting step in the reaction under equilibrium conditions. However, little is known about N2 adsorption on other iron-based materials, such as iron oxide surfaces that are ubiquitous in soils, steel pipelines, and other industrial materials. An atomistic description is reported for the binding of N2 on the Fe3O4(001) surface using first principles calculations with ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Two primary adsorption sites are experimentally identified from N2 dissociation on Fe3O4(001). The electronic signatures associated with the valence band region unambiguously show how the electronic structure of magnetite transforms near ambient pressures due to the binding of atomic nitrogen to different surface sites. Overall, the experimental and theoretical results of our study bridge the gap between ultra-high vacuum studies and reaction conditions to provide insight into other nitrogen-based chemistry on iron oxide surfaces that impact the agriculture and energy industries.
